Footballguys Joins Fantasyplayers Ad Network (1 Viewer)

Hey Guys,

Headsup on something that is coming soon.

We recently signed an agreement to work with the folks at Fantasyplayers.com to be part of their advertising network.

Before something gets started, this is a deal for nothing more than advertising. Fantasyplayers.com has no ownership whatsoever in Footballguys. Zero. All we are doing is using their ad network to help us generate some money from advertising. There do own a few sites but the great majority of the sites in their network are just like us - using the network soley to sell ads.

We've done some ads in the past with limited success for us. The problem is always that we are not big enough to be able to secure an audience with the people that matter in the huge corporations when it comes to quality ads. Fantasyplayers.com has a very large network of sports specific sites (mostly football and mostly fantasy football) and they have been able to put enough sites together in a network that they have an attractive base of eyes to the huge advertisers.

So we're going to see how it goes here.

I realize full well that ads are not popular. But we're at a point in our business where we can't continue to operate the site and boards as we have been. They have to be able to generate some money. One alternative was to charge a subscription fee for the boards. Many have asked that we make the boards for paying subscribers only but you guys know I'm not a fan of that. Another option would be to dramatically raise the price of the premium FBG subscription in order to help offset the costs more. But that's not a very attractive option either.

What we settled on was offering ads on the pages. The pages here will have a banner at top and a taller skinny banner on the right side. Again, I realize that's not going to be popular, but that's the reality of where we are in that we have to be able to have the pages generate some money if we are going to continue offering free access to the boards.

You have my word (and I made them write it into the contract) that we would not have popup ads. I hate those as does everyone I know. I told them I'd shut the boards down before we had popups. If you ever see any popup ads, it's a mistake and please report it immediately.

All advertising is a trade. The viewer "pays" for the material (even when the material is free) by accepting ads being on the site. I realize that fully. So it's our job to help the free material be worth "paying for".

It's my hope that the quality material you guys continue to post on the boards will be enough to make the ads worthwhile. So I'm asking for your help there. Keep posting good stuff. I'm also asking for your patience there as I have no doubt there will be some that don't like this. This board has become what it is for one reason only - because guys like you provide great discussion. I contribute relatively nothing in the big picture of it. It's you guys. Thanks for your patience and making this place what it is.

Thanks.

J

Never had any problems with banner ads at the top.

For the skinny banner ad down the right side, do you know if any of these will be those obnoxious flashing ads that will make it difficult for us to read the forums?

Oh c'mon! At least let us have some fun with the board's epileptics!

Yeah, please. No CGI chicks dancing around telling how great her mortgage rates are. Just do it Google-style.

Thought this was the FFA...
It was, but they never replied to my thread on the topic.FTR: This has not gone over well at severl of the other fantasy sites. However, if its kept off the forums - I doubt it will even be an issue. Good luck.
The forums are where the most traffic is. As long as there aren't obnoxious banners or pop-ups, I doubt many people will be bothered.

can't say I blame you one bit, but at the same time I doubt this site is struggling to make cash. Interested to see the ads on the sides of the board, or how thats going to look anyways.

There's a difference between making money and making a profit. If joe says they need to do this, I believe him.

Do we need to click on them every once in awhile to make you money.

To clarify, how many times do I have to click to pay for my subscription. :excited:

Are any of the ads gonna have sound? Those are even more annoying then pop-ups.
No. I've looking into joining the FantasyPlayers Network myself and have spoken to several businesses currently part of the network. It's very unintrusive. My guess is most here have visited several of the network's sites and didn't even realize it. Not a big deal and Joe made a great decision by joining. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

I caught your test run the other day and it was OK

I'd think the boards generate MUCH more traffic than the main site, so it would be wrong to up th subscription cost to offset non-subscriber content.

Sorry to hear this. Thought the Ampthenol ad was a sign that you were having success do just that.

They do at KFFL and Diehards. This implementation will be different? If so, thank you very much.

I don't like how you scroll over it and the ad turns into a bigger pop up where you have to hit close. Most of them do that. I don't scroll over it on purpose but, it's already annoying.

If it's just those ads on the top, they aren't all that bad.....but ads on the side too Joe?
They look like poo and downgrade the quality of the website, IMO. But business is business.
Well, you can have the option of paying twice as much for a membership or maybe no site at all or at least no forums. I'd rather a non intrusive ad at the top of the page and free forums than the alternative.FWIW, its a little annoying with the animation, but we will get used to it. Again, we can pay or advertisers can pay and we have to get used to ads.

Your right. The firedog one or something did that to me, I thought it was a popup.

:goodposting:  But agreed in that business is business and you've gotta whatever is necessary to survive.

I think you missed the business is business part of my post. :goodposting: FWIW, I'd pay more to remove the ads and have a membership forum.

Personally, Id prefer to have more of the free content and have ads. Why is it such a big deal - most sites have them at this point. Membership forum sounds nice - until it becomes sparsely populated enough to become worthless to the very members who originally begged for a members only forum.

With much trepidation, I'm going to suggest that you go ahead and shut the boards down. That would give most of us a chance to do other things, like.... go outside.... see the wife now and then, etc.

Leave Mom and Dads basement after 37 years? You are crazy!!

Good luck with this Joe.

That side banner was so annoying, I hope you'll consider entrance ads or those ads between page views before you'll consider putting them back again.

Good luck

:ptts: :goodposting: Are you guys that desperate for cash? I come on the boards after being away for a little bit and 20% of my screen is taken over by some "live strong" banner to the side of the page. I can understand and not complain about the banner ads on top of the page... but this ad on the side is unbearable. :goodposting: :goodposting:

The side ad is terribly distracting. Im down with the concept of ads, but I feel like Im surfing the old netzero to be honest.

 Not to pile on, but that side ad is horrible. Especially when you have a laptop. Takes up a third of the screen.

I have zero problems with ads as it takes $$$ to run a site like this but the side is very annoying
