** Official Chicago Bears Offseason thread ** (1 Viewer)

I think the Bears have had a very SAFE draft so far. They needed a left tackle. They drafted the best available. They needed an NFL caliber running back to push Benson, and they drafted one that played in an NFL style offense who was the Senior Bowl Offensive MVP. (Benson will start off the season on the PUP list btw... book it)Tomorrow they'll upgrade at WR, draft a QB with solid mechanics, draft a guard, perhaps a FB and get some depth at DT and safety.
Then why not take Brohm in the 2nd and Forte in the 3rd, if you're going to look at it that way? Extremely likely Forte would still be there. No way Henne or Brohm were going to be. I'm :shuked: Many things have killed them the past few seasons but, in my opinion, the offensive line and qb have been by far the worst and it isn't close. Not many can deny the qb play has dragged this team down the last 2 DECADES. Sickening
 :excited:

I like Fote and am happy with the pick. Surprised it wasnt Henne but no problem with Forte.NOW, I seriously hope they do not waste a pick, (ESPECIALLY ONE OF THE THIRDS), one of these project qbs that will never pan out (read: Booty, Johnson, etc...)
The Forte pick was a wasted pick.
Because you are satisfied with our non-existant running game or because you dont like Forte?

I believe he'd have been there in the 3rd. Plus, I think the running game has more to do with the OL than the RBs.

Earl Bennett with our first 3rd

Good pick. Lots of big conference experience. Should be ready to go from day 1

Very good pick there.

Does not have the great measurables...but he gets open and he catches it when thrown to him.

Help for the d-line, Marcus Harrison is the other 3rd round pick.
Looks to have knee problems, and has been busted for drugs. :) I hope this pick turns out to be better than it looks now.

The guy is a big run-stuffer, something we sorely need. At this point he was worth taking a shot on.

We were an embarrasment against the run last year.

FWIW, Harrison was the best available overall player at the time the Bears picked him with their second pick in the 3rd.

They just traded down a few spots in the 4th round, from pick 110 down to 115 and picked up an extra 7th in the deal with the Dolphins.

Back on the clcock now. I'm hoping for Josh Johnson here, but I think Angelo would be more likely to take John David Booty.

They just traded down again. Down 5 picks with TB. Are they just stockpiling more 7th round picks? Didn't they already have like 4 of them to begin with. They must be trying to bolster they're practice squad.

I would love to see one of the Joshes taken here, either QB Johnson or SS Barrett (LB size, CB speed).

This guy sounds like Tank Johnson 2008.

Analysis

Positives: Has a thick chest, big back and wide waist and hips...More of a two-gap type who needs to play with better consistency, as he showed in the past that he is capable of defeating blocks and clogging rush lanes...Marginal pass rusher, but does have enough speed to move along and make plays at the line of scrimmage...Shows adequate quickness and agility coming out of his stance, but only when he keeps his pad level down (tends to get tall in his stance)...When he shows desire, he is effective at shooting his hands to gain separation in attempts to shed blocks (but short-arms too often, allowing double teams to wash him out)...Has the functional feet and balance to make plays outside the box (former defensive end)...When he stays low in his stance and keeps his hands inside his frame, he is able to maintain position vs. a blocker right over his head...When he does a good job in reading and recognizing the play, he is effective at getting into position to make the play (consistency is lacking)...Has better power playing the two-gap than on the move...When he keeps his hands active, he can get off blocks quicker...Good collision-type tackler with the ideal reach to latch on and drag ballcarriers down...Hits with a thud and can clog rush lanes and push the lead blocker back with his initial low step off the snap...Has limitations reading schemes up front, but when he locates the ball, he is quick to close...Does not do it often, but when he uses his hands to disengage, he is capable of creating a new line of scrimmage...Has the frame to carry more bulk without having it affect his speed...When he finds the screens, he takes good angles to close.

Negatives: Has had left knee injuries that warrant further medical evaluation...His 2007 summer arrest needs to be resolved before a team can invest a draft pick in him...Did a good job rehabilitating from his 2007 knee injury, but the former coaching staff felt that he needed to be monitored, as he rarely pushed himself in the training room and was a problem at times in the locker room (the staff questioned his toughness, as he would not give full effort when hurt and while trying to become a leader, he failed to live by example and spent more time yelling at teammates rather than mentoring them)...Will get into a rhythm on the field where he would just go through the motions for long stretches and the staff felt that he was getting complacent, lacking the fire in his belly to play until the whistle...Has stiff hips that cause him to look sluggish working his way down the line...Needs to learn how to sink his pads and keep his back low, as he narrows his base and gets pushed off the line of scrimmage often, when he gets too tall coming off the snap...Lacks an array of pass-rush moves and, while naturally strong, he does not extend his hands or generate a powerful punch that is needed to keep blockers off his feet...His tall stance and "short arm" tactics leave him exposed to cut blocks and double teams give him problems, as he does not anchor well, nor use his hands effectively to shed...Needs a clear path to the quarterback, as he does not have the speed or agility to generate a long chase...Marginal bull rusher with very poor rip and club moves, and can be stonewalled by a strong hand placement from an offensive lineman, as he fails to maintain leverage...Has marginal lower-body strength to gain position and hold his ground firmly...Has had problems with the snap cadence and can be drawn offside...Must also be more alert to blocking schemes and does not show the vision to quickly locate the ball in a crowd...Too rigid in his hips to execute a spin move to play off blocks and will throttle down when not involved in the action...Must show renewed desire and effort in his play.

Compares To: ANTWAN LAKE-New Orleans...Lake has picked up some nice paychecks the last five years with little production to show for it. Harrison runs too hot-and-cold, both on and off the field. He needs to show a better work ethic in training and his arrest last summer is sure to scare away a few teams. He was given an opportunity to rise to the occasion at the Senior Bowl, but gave more inconsistent performance, hurting his stock. He is a good space-eater on the front wall, but with poor pad level, inconsistent effort, injury problems and character issues, you wonder if his position coach is going to need a more patience than can be expected at the NFL level to develop Harrison.

Tanks Johnson, but already injured and doesn't want to work.

Ok, so they grabbed Craig Steltz, SS from LSU. Something must be wrong with Josh Barrett...

I may be in the minority, but I am very happy with this draft so far for the Bears.
So am I. Every pick has addressed a major need. Steltz is another guy I thought would go sooner.
Strengths: Reads quarterbacks' eyes, takes sound angles to the ball and shows better range than timed speed suggests. Generally stays as deep as the deepest receiver and does a good job of protecting himself when drops into zone coverage. Times hits well, plays with a mean streak and flashes the ability to separate the receiver from the ball. Stays disciplined and rarely bites on play action. Aggressive in coverage, jumps routes and breaks on the ball well. Shows excellent ball skills and is a natural playmaker. Times jumps well and is tall enough to compete for jump balls. Big enough to line up in the box and is tall enough to add bulk to frame. Made steady progress at the collegiate level, shows excellent work ethic on as well as off the field and should only continue to get better with added experience. Has extensive special teams' experience and can make immediate contributions in that area.Weaknesses: Does an adequate job of flipping hips when forced to turn and run but isn't fast enough to stay with NFL receivers and can get beat deep when left on an island. Isn't explosive coming out of cuts and is going to have problems matching up with slot receivers in man coverage. Takes too long to react to the run and doesn't always fill hard in run support. Plays too high and can get engulfed when lines up in the box. Doesn't use hands well and takes too long to shed blocks between the tackles. Doesn't show great body control in space, over runs the ball carrier at times and misses some open field tackles. Appears to catch ball carriers rather than exploding into them and isn't a powerful open field tackler. Broke thumb in 2004, slowed by a hamstring injury in 2007 and missed the Senior Bowl after sustaining a shoulder injury in the BCS Championship game so durability is a concern.Overall: Steltz arrived at LSU in 2004 and appeared in four games as a true freshman, recording one tackle. In his next two seasons (2005 and 2006), he played in 26 games (six starts) and combined for 82 tackles (two for losses), one sack, seven pass breakups and four interceptions. He also blocked and recovered a punt, returning it 29 yards for a touchdown. As a senior in 2007, he started all 14 games at strong safety and had 101 tackles (five for losses), one sack, three forced fumbles, seven pass breakups and six interceptions. Steltz was bothered by a hamstring pull in 2007, and he wasn't able to accept an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl after suffering a right shoulder stinger in the 2008 BCS title game. His brother, Kevin, was a three-year starter at fullback and an LSU teammate. Steltz doesn't have great top-end speed and he isn't as physical a run defender as his size suggests but he uses positioning to mask his lack of range in coverage and he's big enough to develop in an effective run stopper. In addition, he should make early contributions on special teams so he projects as a late fourth or early fifth round pick.

safe draft.

Angelo could have done more.

if you like forte you can trade down grab an extra pick..

not manipulating the draft is the major problem here.

Forte would've been snapped up by Detroit or Baltimore if we didn't grab him first.

Picks 142 and 158 coming up.

QB will be the choice with 142.

Da Bears needed a LT, period. IMO, this was fantastic pick, and probably the saftest Da Bears could make at 14. Now Tait can move back to RT, his natual position. I liked Albert a lot, but I don't see him developing into a starting tackle in 08. If Da bears don't get the O-line fixed in this draft, the Grossman/Orton juggernaut will find themselves on their backs counting the stadium lights on passing downs. The Vikes and Pack will both have scary-good D-lines this season. This draft should be all about the offensive side of the ball.
Agreed. The Bears needed to add an offensive lineman, and they got a guy in Chris Williams that projects out as a LT. Ideally, he'll slide right into the LT spot from Day 1, and allow the Bears to move John Tait back to RT.We can draft all the exciting players we want, but this line was so bad last season that we needed to add a top talent.

Matt Forte it is... I'm ok with it.
I'd be okay with that in the third or fourth round. Angelo does this, he falls in love with a guy and overdrafts him. Forte was a third or fourth round RB. Brohm and Henne were both on the board, as well as Sweed. At least the Bears got a LT. I like Rice better than Forte, and he was drafted way too early. And now we are stuck with another year of looking at this train wreck at QB.
Forte went about where he should have gone. He was projected as a 2nd round pick. You are wrong in your projections.I wasn't crazy about Brohm or Henne, but wouldn't have been upset if they had gone in that direction, but even if we took Henne or Brohm, they would probably be backups in Year 1 anyways to Grossman and Orton.

Any QB taken will be a project, which is why none were taken earlier. Forte will see the field immediately and have a significant impact.

Nicks is a nice run-blocking RT, pass blocking is not so great.

BTW, Booty goes to the Vikings.

all rookie qbs taken need seasoning-

we need to grab and develop a qb and create a better option at the position.

this is not a quick fix job

Zachary Bowman from nfl.com

Compares To: FABIAN WASHINGTON-Oakland...Husker cornerbacks need to come with a "buyer beware" tag on their jerseys. Washington proved to be a bust and injuries make Bowman a risky draft pick, despite his timed speed. He is never going to be an efficient open-field tackler and lacks great ball recognition skills. Sure, he can stay with the receivers on routes and break up a bunch of passes, but more often than not, he will bite on play-action and pump fakes, giving up the big play. Anything more than a seventh-round pick on this medical risk and a general manager will regret making that decision.

As long as we're taking guys with bad knees, why not Dennis Dixon in the 7th?

Well, I for one didn't want Henne or Booty, and am glad the Bears didn't make the mistake of drafting them. Yes, the Bears do need help at QB, but there just wasn't a whole lot of quality at the position this year. Brohm would have been about the only one that would have been ok in my opinion, but as someone else mentioned earlier, Orton/Grossman are at least ok to start in the short term, whereas Benson is not. Forte was a great pick where they got him imo.

I agree. The Packers invested a first round pick in Rogers, but they still protected themselves with Brohm. The Bears can't be all that confident in Grossman or Orton. If you don't draft a QB then you are starting from scratch next year.

Gotta think Woodson or Brennan with the next pick.

Now there's some quality. 4th place in the NFC North is sewn up. Blew it on a QB this year and the 2009 class is worse.

#158 (5.23) - Kellen Davis, TE, Michigan State
Bummer. I had Kellen Davis targeted as a sleeper of sorts, hoping he would go to a team like the Saints (or Bengals or Lions). For FF purposes, I think this is the worst possible landing for him .... although, the Bears WRs are bad.

Josh Johnson gone, picked by the Bucs... 4:1 TD:INT ratio would've been nice to have. Cut that in half to 2:1 and it'd still be much better than what we've had in a long time.

 :goodposting: :loco:
