I have always wondered how this works with some of these rookie drafts that have veterans mixed in. The only thing I can use to possibly explain it is if there is somehow a league-specific salary cap/contract years limitation on some of these veteran guys that we aren't aware of.Like in this draft linked above: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...t&p=9093386

Aaron Rodgers went at 3.10 behind guys like WR Adrian Arrington, Early Doucet, even Jordy Nelson - Rodgers' own #4/5 receiver. On a strictly value point of view - even if you don't like Rodgers' prospects - drafting in a draft of mostly rookies, Rodgers has gotta be at least a first rounder in almost any format?

Which is why I say that there must be some sort of other influence that makes the veterans less valuable in these drafts...I must confess, I'm shuked, though...

I agree that Smith and Slaton went too low, I was shocked when Smith fell so far. For those interested, here's the vets mixed in. Note that missing picks from the third round were due to a league rule that lets us protect an 8th player if they were a rookie last year, at the cost of a 3rd rounder. Also note that league rules force us to carry 2 TE and 2 PK.

I tried to bold all the rooks I could identify. Might have missed a WR or two as I didn't look into them as much this year.

I agree that Smith and Slaton went too low, I was shocked when Smith fell so far. For those interested, here's the vets mixed in. Note that missing picks from the third round were due to a league rule that lets us protect an 8th player if they were a rookie last year, at the cost of a 3rd rounder. Also note that league rules force us to carry 2 TE and 2 PK.

We have a 12 team, up to 20-keeper PPR dynasty league in our 10th season together. You will see a run on RBs in the first round. Although we are a PPR, there are a lot of good WR in our FA pool, and almost every RB1 and RB2 per team is locked as a keeper. Here are our rookie draft results with some editorial comments:

1) Rashard Mendenhall: Picked because of TD-hog likelihood and Coach felt Oakland backfield will be unsettled "for years"

2) Darren McFadden: Coach nearly fell off the sofa when DMC fell to him at 2

3) Matt Forte: Also picked Mendenhall. Loved Forte's performance at Senior Bowl.

4) Jonathan Stewart: My pick, I jumped at "Daily Show" falling to 4.

5) Ray Rice: Consistent with rookie rankings

6) Kevin Smith: I liked this pick very much. I think Kevin Smith will have a Curtis Martin like career.

7) Steve Slaton: A bit early IMO. Coming off a good preseason performance and Coach jumped.

8) Chris Johnson: My pick, "Flash" falling to me at 8 in a PPR dynasty league was fantastic.

9) Matt Ryan: This team only had Brodie Croyle as QB keeper and needed this pick. Still good value at 9.

10) Felix Jones: Felix was the one who fell the farthest from pre-season mocks. MB3 has been strong this preseason.

11) Tim Hightower: Perhaps the highest risk/reward pick. I think reward. "Police Academy" will be like MB3 in a couple of years.

12) Devin Thomas: This is where we started to see need picks.

13) Dustin Keller: " "

14) Limas Sweed: " "

15) Mike Hart: Michigan alum, likes Hart in Indy. Was also a need pick.

16) Chad Henne: Michigan alum, was also a need pick

24) Ryan Torain: Last of our keepers. If Torain was not out for half/full season, Torain would likely have gone in the first round.

Players not drafted in the rookie keeper rounds (but were drafted in late player-keeper rounds):

1) James Hardy: I tried 3-4 times to trade into our second round of rookie picks to get Hardy. Can't believe he fell. #1 WR IMO

2) Tashard Choice: Disappointed in preseason and behind MB3 and Felix.

3) Malcolm Kelly: A great steal in the player keeper rounds if/when he's healthy

4) Jalen Parmele

5) Brian Brohm: Had he not been so disappointing this preseason he would have gone late 1st/early 2nd rookie keeper.

6) Colt Brennan: Worth the gamble late

One rookie who was not drafted at all and was a surprise to me was Justin Forsett.

 
Our first three rounds were a week after the NFL Draft in late spring; the last two rounds was a FA draft that took place about two weeks ago.

As I look at other drafts what surprises me:

a) how high Hightower is going

b) how low Morgan goes in some and high in the other; no consensus on him it seems

c) how low Rice is going despite his preseason performance

d) how high Jamaal Charles goes; he IS third string in KC

e) How high Ryan goes in some

f) Very little consensus on rookie WRs in general it seems

g) How LOW some Vets go in combined drafts; guys like Bradshaw and I saw one where Ginn went in like the fourth!

How does that Charles pick look now ? Still an :eek: ? Ya probably a fantastic pick.Man I love looking back at these old drafts and seeing where people went and what people thought back then.Great stuff especially the "eek" about Charles who is now considered a top 5 overall pick.Ray Rice took a beating as well when drafted high and look at him now.
 
I'd be curious, if possible, to hear from the teams that initially drafted and posted in this thread. How has your rookie draft worked out for you? Have you won a championship since? Are they still on your roster?

I don't think we've ever really seen a revisionist look back in terms of fantasy so this could be an interesting thread to explore from the perspective of a team owner 2-3 seasons later.

Not sure if my draft is in this thread but I had the 1.01 that year and took McFadden. I was not a fan of McFadden but no one wanted to trade as I remember. Our draft went as follows:McFadden, Steward, Mendenhall, Smith, Forte, Rice, Jones, Chris JohnsonCharles went at 2.09The year I had McFadden, I made the playoffs however McFadden was my #3/#4 and I did not use him much. I traded him in the off season going into 2009 for Addai and a couple other players switched hands. In 2009, I was able to draft Nicks at 1.08 and finished 5-8 and not in the playoffs. 2009 = McFadden - 83.20 vs. Addai - 252.60The next year, 2010, drafted Benn at 1.05 and McCluster at 1.10. The only "stars" from the rookie draft last year have been a couple of TE's and Mike Williams. In 2010 the tables were turned on McFadden vs. Addai but I had Ryan Grant, Addai, Barber and Foster going into the year. Surely two of those four would pan out, right. Well, only Foster did but I picked up Tolbert and Green-Ellis during the year.2010 = led the league with a 9-4 record, 2nd in points, but lost in the semi's. Bugger's. So, this year I had the 1.10 and picked Jon Baldwin. Conclusion, one off year, one good year giving the players in the trade. I guess this year will be the rubber year but we will see.

I sold out on the '08 RB class and snagged Mendenhall, Rice and CJ2K in every league I could swing it. In this draft, I obviously whiffed on Sweed over Matt Ryan, and Chad Jackson was no prize, but I won a title with the RBs drafted after trading CJ2k for Calvin Johnson.
