It's one thing that corporations data mine us with our smartphones in order to bring or influence us into their product. It's something worse when the Government data mines us in order to protect us with basic phone calls.

The article is pointing out how Obama is expanding W's policy in this particular area. When it comes to the war on terror and our civil liberties, he ain't any different. That's not something I really want to live with going forward, and further expansion of anti-terror policy that infringes on our liberties is damn worth blaming on him.

I actually find their customer service great. I bought a GS3 with their service as well. I can go to any Verizon mall kiosk or store and have them replace those ####### PITA screen protectors that I always struggle with at no cost. In fact I have to go have them replace one tomorrow lulz.
I wish they would have the Google GS4, but I use a vanilla Android ROM on my GS3 that doesn't have any of the Sammy software, so I dunno how Google will develop for the hardware of that device. I don't have a few of those Sammy GS3 features on this device anymore because I ####canned Touch Wiz.

I dug Fios TV when I had it, but at the time it was that or Bright House cable. As soon as I moved outta there I went running back to DirecTv. Fios TV was slick though. Too bad it comes with Verizon attached.

I blame the morons that under W used the company line "its all ok as long as you ain't doin' nuthing wrong".
At no point has Obama ever given me the impression that when it comes to getting stuff done he is highly principled. This is just another example of "the ends justifies the means" and "we the people demand 'warm and cozy' feelings of security".
This should be the great scandal but it is more of just giving the people what they want.

Playing devils advocate but what does it really matter in the grand scheme of things. I get the "slippery slope" argument but this was a part of the Patriot Act. How exactly will the Feds collecting phone call info directly affect me?

Not that it really makes it that much better, but it looks like they only have confirmation of an order to monitor all calls from the Verizon Business side of things. So no confirmation on cellphone data being involved yet. But if your company uses Verizon, then you've been monitored.

And this is why these abuses are allowed to keep taking place--we want warm and fuzzies knowing that we're protected against terrorism and since 99% of the people are pretty much oblivious and uninvolved in those machinations there will never be enough of a groundswell to change the practice. For that matter--after anything like this becomes transparent enough to where the terrorists manage to stage an event around them we generally decide we don't want to change the practice. I believe the catchphrase is 'necessary evil'.

Exactly. It's also his policy. He has done nothing to shrink the imperial presidency and everything to expand it. This is Bush's 4th term as far as I am concerned at least in this area. Massive failure by Obama to even attempt to deliver on the promises he made the first time around.

I seem to recall the Patriot Act having broad support on both sides of the aisle and was scary as ####. It still is and that should be fixed imo.

My biggest problem with this story isn't actually the collecting-phone-records part. I'm much more bothered by the fact that stuff like this can be done in a secret court system in which we don't even get to see the government's justification for this action or the way in which the government is interpreting the law. I understand the rationale for why FISA courts exist, but this is pretty obviously a situation that's ripe for even worse abuses than this one.

Obama and Hillary are the same politicians. Both Third Way conservative suckups. For all his faults I'd think there was a better chance Christy might actually make some changes. But I wouldn't hold my breath or anything. And Rand Paul will never sniff the White House.
