NL only, 10 team, 5x5.

$260 cap

12 position

9 pitchers

4 bench

I can keep up to five players, out of the list below who would you keep?

Y Alonso $6

J Bruce $37

D Espinosa $9

M More $14

M Stanton $27

D Stubbs $27

Y Gallardo $23

Right now, I think I'd keep Stanton, Morse, and Espinosa for sure. The other two slots, I'm not sure about.

Agree on Stanton, Morse, and Espinosa. But Why wouldn't you keep Alonso? Should be Padres first baseman for years to come and has good bat.Fifth is not so easy - depends on league tendencies and inflation as to whether I would keep Gallardo - otherwise I would just keep the four above.

I assume it's Morse? Those are all pretty high prices.

Stanton is a definite. I think Morse is too. I'd also keep Espinosa and YoGa. That makes 4.

I like Stubbs and I'm willing to bet on him, but if you keep him, you're in a pretty big AVG hole. I agree that Alonso should return some value, but in a 10-teamer with only 12 hitters he might be close to replacement level in a crappy lineup in Petco. Bruce is definitely too expensive, so it's either Stubbs or go with 4 for me unless you think Alonso returns positive value.

Do you have to keep 5?

I'd certainly keep Stanton, Espinosa and Morse. I'm not wild about Alonso in that park in that lineup, but for $6 I figure you need to keep him in an NL only league, especially considering how thin the position could be if Fielder goes to the AL. I'd probably lean towards Stubbs too. Not that I think he's a great value, but I think he and Gallardo are about on par i.e. value, so I'd keep the hitter.

let's take a look at your salaries and projected earnings (and hope formatting holds

player/salary proj $earn

Y Alonso $6 $13

J Bruce $37 $27

D Espinosa $9 $17

M Morse $14 $24

M Stanton $27 $29

D Stubbs $27 $22

Y Gallardo $23 $16

So as suggested before, you make a profit on Alonso, Espinosa, Morse, and Stanton

You lose money on Gallardo and Bruce but I might be willing to do that with the SP depending on league tendencies.

:goodposting: The riskiest call is Gallardo. I'm not crazy about tying up 9% of your budget on a pitcher but if there are a lot of other keeper SPs, the remaining ones might be subject to keeper inflation during the auction.

Thanks everyone. Petco worries me about Alonzo, but for $6 I guess he's worth it.
1) I think people have bad views on Petco - it's actually close to neutral for hitters (better for pitchers)2) The point with Alonso (even if he weren't expected to make you a small profit this year) is that in order to have him next year (and beyond) you have to keep him this year at a reasonable price.3) I doubt he has changed since I saw him last year - so that line drive swing should play fine in Petco

This makes no sense and its wrong.
Petco isn't as negative for line drive hitters like Alonso but it does supress power and runs. Home park will impact production in three of the four categories relevant for Alonso. But $6 isn't a bad price for a CI/OF who should be a middle of the order regular for the Padres.Fun fact from when I was checking position eligibility for Alonso. On Aug 29, 2011 he played a full nine inning game at 3B and didn't register an assist, putout or error.

Last year's draft

Halladay $34

Lincecum $33

Lee $33

Kershaw $23

Seeing those prices for pitchers last year, does that change anyone's opinion on Gallardo, positively or negatively?

Were those year one auction prices or a re-auction of non-keepers?

Year 1. The league has been around 20 years, but just switched to auction last year.
In that case, I'd keep Gallardo. There's bound to be some inflation during year 2 of a keeper league

If Heisey were to win the LF job in Cincinnati, he'd be obviously preferable @$6 over Stubbs, right?
Its rarely clear cut in Cincy though. If I had to guess I would say Heisey starts opening day and then Ludwick ends up playing 70-80 games in left. Its easy to see LF in GABP as a potential for cheap offensive production, but its more likely that all of Heisey, Ludwick, Stubbs, and maybe even Bruce are in a rotation.Agree with the posters above the Alonso can play well in Petco. He's got the raw strength to hit it out of anywhere if he gets it, but really his game is line drives which will find room in Petco.

WIth the news of Fielder heading to the AL, you HAVE to keep Morse and Alonso. 1B is dreadful in the NL this year and anyone with a pulse is going to be expensive.
