Dear Bicycle Guy,

Please do not ride your bicycle on main roadways. You are a danger to yourself and to drivers of cars which is what the roads were built for anyway. You are going 1/4 of the speed as the automobiles that are having to swerve around you. You do not own the road. You are not in the Tour de France so you can take off the fancy matching shorts, shirt, fanny pack, and little helmet for your Sunday ride. You want to be treated like any other vehicle on the road, but you often ignore signal lights and other driving rules that automobiles adhere to.

There are plenty of trails, parks, sidewalks, and other non-dangerous paths to ride your bicycle on. You can own the road there. Please go there.

TIA

signed.

i always wonder what these people do for a living that they can be riding their fkn bikes during commuting hours dressed like they're in a race.

& these maroons riding Citibike all over the place... I'm sure they'll roll that #### out in other major cities too.

He does actually have as much right to the road as you do. In at least some cities, bikes are mandated to be on the road, not the sidewalks. And bike helmets are a good idea.

On the other hand, I'm with you on the part about ignoring traffic signs. I'm pretty friendly toward bicycles, but this gets on my nerves.

Amen, brother!

My daily commute has me driving roads that are winding through hills and around blind curves, where the road is barely big enough for two cars to pass by. Yet there is always some idiot out on his bike riding on these roads. The speed limits on these roads are usually 40 or 45. But if you come around a blind corner and meet up with a biker doing 15 mph, you have no way of braking in time. I've almost hit a hundred of them. And they always flip me off when I come up on them, like I've done something wrong.

Even scarier is people who pass the bikers by using my lane around corners or over hills. It should be illegal to ride bikes on these roads. They are a danger to everyone on them. And the worst part is, if a car hits one of these idiots, they'd probably crucify the guy in the car. :hot:

At least pick a road with a shoulder. A one lane winding road with hills and no shoulder is not a place for a bike to travel with cars. You could get yourself hurt, or even worse, damage a car.

While I will agree bikers are not safe on the roads they have the same right as a car and have to follow the same rules. Bikers are supposed to travel in the same direction in the same lanes as cars. You should not meet one on a blind curve unless they are traveling the wrong direction. We need designated bike lanes for safety of bikers and for the patience of drivers.

As I guy with 4 bikes in his garage that in total cost more than what his car is worth today...I fully agree. The ONLY time I'm on roads like that is when I'm in a large group charity ride or something similar, and even then I'm putting my life in danger. Just found a great trail network 10 minutes from my house with 2 weekly group rides, and that's more than enough for me.

Not true. If a bike is doing 20 mph on a 45 mph road, I guarantee you that you will meet coming around a blind curve.

I'm not sure what you guys want Bike Guy to do. Rent a backhoe and pave his own bike lane? He didn't design these roads.

Great for scaring people in parking garages, too. Those things come out of nowhere.

Some of you might want to trying cycling some time. You'll lose weight and have a lot more energy. And its a helluva lot more fun then running. Don't be a part of the obesity problem in this country. Be a part of the solution.

Stick to the bike trails, hippy.

No one's saying people shouldn't bike. Situps are good for you, too. But you shouldn't do those in the middle of the road on a blind curve, either.

Trails are a mess this time of the year. During the week, not enough day light to get to trails have a good ride and get home. Next suggestion. And don't say become fat.

I don't know anyone that rides in the middle of the road. I've also never seen anyone that's not a complete noob riding against traffic. I do agree that people that ride 2 and 3 wide are idiots. And if there's no shoulder in some sections on back country roads, we just need to share the road for a small stretch.

Stationary exercise bike.

Or anything other than being on main roadways.

C'mon. There's a reason why we have an obesity problem in this country. Who the hell wants to ride on one of those things. You'll never stick with that. You can ride for an hour, burn a 1k calories and not even know it b/c you're having so much fun.

On a more serious note, my main beef with bikers are the ones who ##### and moan about cars running them off the road while at the same time these are the same people running lights on their bikes, hitting or narrowly missing pedestrians in the process.

Dear selfish, law-unknowing, lazy, carbon emission loving, climate change denying, car driving American fatass,

As noted above, in many locals it is illegal to ride a bike on a sidewalk. More importantly, it is patently unsafe, especially for pedestrians. Perhaps your anger should be directed more at the DOT in your state who has not provided for complete streets that provide the best and safest mode of transport for automobiles, bikes and pedestrians. I am sorry that you ask me to apologize for using an alternative means of transportation which not only helps the environment, keep me fit (and therefore reducing costs to the public from poor health) and probably that only fact of concern to you, keeping more cars and therefore traffic off the road (not to mention cost for potholes and street repairs down).

Now, for those brethren of mine who are foolish enough to ignore street signs, they will learn the hard way. Unfortunately, autocentric fatboys take such little heed of our legal right to share the road that sometimes it is difficult to fully abide without taking our lives needlessly into your crappy driving (I'm especially talking to you, Mercedes and BMW drivers). Maybe if American's weren't such selfcentered fatheads we could find a way to share the road in a responsible way - but that's difficult when you won't even acknowledge our legal right (and legal obligation) to ride on the road, as is true with all other vehicles.

Sincerely,

Healthy, traffic alleviating, carbon emission reducing bicyclist

ETA: Hypothetical bicyclist. No way I'm getting on the road with crazy folk like you all around. Plus I'm lazy. Just more respectful of those who aren't. And I recognize the need to foster alternate modes of transportation.

I was in San Francisco in September. They had some nice bike lanes going along the water. Didn't see any problems. I didn't go into the city itself so I can't comment on that.

I like how the bicycle guy is calling guys in cars fat. Have you seen half the dudes riding these bikes in their spandex Tour uniforms? :X

Again, there are plenty of roads that have ample room to ride a bike. I don't care if you do it there. But on my daily commute, these roads do not have ample room. Some of them barely have enough room for two cars. The kind of roads where they don't paint a yellow line in the middle because they know if they do that, they lanes won't show up big enough. Stay the hell off of these roads. We are not sharing these roads. The bike is hogging the road. And, again, if I am doing 45 mph (the speed limit) and come up on a biker driving in my lane, going the same direction as me, doing 20 mph, there is going to be an issue.

Here's the takeaway from these threads.... every time.....

Car guy: You are a hazard to everyone and you make driving dangerous.

Bike guy: Yeah? Well you're fat.

No there's not. We're talking about 20+ mile rides. And I'm on the low end for most riders b/c I just use it for some exercise and an hour or so of enjoyment. You try stringing together a ride like that without riding on some roads that aren't ideal for cycling. I'd love to have a stretch of roads like that but they just don't exist in most places.

So write a letter to city hall and stop harassing the drivers.

In all seriousness, I don't mind most bike riders that I come across. Like anything else there are those riders who either don't give a rats a$$ or are completely unaware of the 20 cars stuck behind them and only way around is to swerve into oncoming traffic for miles. A leisure ride vs. people trying to actually get somewhere, let's ponder that.

Ugh. One time I got behind a pack of these Tour de France wannabe's on a tight two lane road with traffic going in both directions, no shoulders, IN THE DARK! There was a massive line of cars waiting behind these jackoffs trying to pass them without sideswiping them. I hate bikers.

And the thing is, I like riding a bike. I do it on occasion for the relaxation and calorie burn.

Biker-guy, a quick question, why does every biker have to be decked in Tour gear from head to toe? I get that the Tour riders wear it to make them work more efficiently, but shouldn't Joe weekend-biker want to work hard and therefore not wear such streamlined clothes? Plus, enough with the bike shorts...

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I don't understand how it is knowingly a bad idea to ride on these roads and puts both motorists and bikers in danger, yet bikers don't care.

I don't get that one either. Not only does that swag cost a ton, but the last thing I want to do is give a driver another reason to take me out. Just lyrcra shorts and a nike shirt for me. And the bike shorts are mandatory. Try riding for a few hours wearing something else; major rashing.
