Kolsch Beers - Yep, Another Beer Thread (1 Viewer)

I've been trying to expand my beer palate lately. I've been randomly choosing variety packs at the beer distributer to take home and sample.

One beer that I have fpund that I particularly like is Leinenkugel's Canoe Paddler. I see on the label that it is a Kolsch-style beer. What are some other Kolsch beers that I should try?

Thanks guys. Ive seen the lists and the Reissdorf comes up a lot on Google searches. I might have to give that and the Sierra Nevada a shot. Is the Reissdorf generally hard to find?

They have it at a local beer store where I live. You'd probably need to find a store that sells a large selection of craft beers, though.

Sam made a kolsch two years ago and put it in their Summer selection pack. Then they got rid of it, which is a shame.

Kolsch beers are great session beers, as they say. I really enjoy them. The local brew pub by where I live makes a great one, though that does you no good.

I think Stoudt's Karnival is also decent. I love the style but haven't found many commercial examples that I've loved.

Whatever you do, stay away from anything that says black/dark Kolsch. I normally love Stone's products but I found nothing Kolsch-like about Sprocket

There's a large beer distributor in the area that has their inventory online. This is one of the three Kolschs that they have. I plan to give it a shot.

Long Trail has one...I think it's called Ramble.

Flying Bison has one also (716) but I'm guessing you don't get that wherever you are.

St. Arnold's Fancy Lawnmower is real popular at the bar I work at. It's an easy recommendation for the people who are just looking for something light.

Well I don't know if you can get it but Covington Brewery down here makes one.

This actually started out as a beer just labeled "Kolsch" with a blue and white Bavarian background, in cans, that looked just like a local beer that used to be made by a long time grocery that had a German name (now defunct).

They might have been the first of the non-Dixie local brews down here after Abita. I loved it, very refreshing for summer.

Also I have some friends/relatives who are German and they live near Munich. When they came here most recently they asked for lagers and kolsch. I thought hey that should be easy. I perused all the beers in a couple groceries and you know what it proved pretty slim pickings.

Anyway, good stuff. Here's the Covington Kolsch.

I stopped by the Lancaster Brewing Company (Lancaster, PA) and picked up the Kolsch that Jaysus mentioned earlier in the thread.

I thought it was a really good beer. It was very smooth. It didn't have that bite that pilsners do, and it was not hoppy at all. Just a clean, smooth, light taste.

Criminally underrated style.
Completely agree. It's a great beer to have while eating, and is so crisp and light that it makes a nice beer to start off a night of drinking with. Love Kolsch.
You should try a dunkel then. Darker but crisp and with awesome flavor. Warsteiner makes one.http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/360/1611/
Love Dunkels, wish there were more options in the US. Every brewery in Germany has a great version this time of year.

Which one is your favorite? I can find warsteiner easily, but not much more.

Warsteiner and Franziskaner are the two I have seen in the US. I would have to do some research on my posts here, on Twitter and Instagram to remember the breweries from Germany.

I haven't heard of that, let me know how it is. I live in Plymouth.

All the big Munich breweries do them. Ayinger, Hacker, Augustiner, Hotbrau, etc. Then there's Augustiner.

My particular favorite wasn't one of those. I drank it at the pub a top Passau Castle that had an unforgettable view of Passau and Austria, but I know the brewery was Munich, but I can't recall the name.

And Andechs is the best of that style. (which is what I meant to type next to the  above)

I'm partial to the Ayinger Celebrator.
You ever go to Andechs for their dopplebock dunkel? Phenomenal! Of course going up to the monastery just adds to the experience.
No, I wish. I need to go back to Germany. I was only in Passau for a few days before venturing down the Danube.

Funny that the conversation turned to Dunkel....That sounded familiar, but I could place from where I had heard it.

Well, my brother-in-law, who is in the US Army, has been living in Germany for several years. About 2 years ago, he came and stayed with us for a week. He bought some beer that I had never heard of. I was just digging around in the back of my fridhe and found two Spaten Dunkels. I may have to try one this afternoon.

Was introduced to kolsch in 99 when traveling through koln. Not my go to, but nice on a hot summer day. Dunkel eeissen is one of my favorite styled... Franziskaner being the most available out here. Like the dunkel lagers as well, just not as much.

They're Spaten and they're 2 years old. Get rid of them. ;)

My wife says that they're 3 years old. Regardless, they're not bad. I'd be interested in tasting a fresh one.
