The Strain -- New Show on FX Sunday nights (1 Viewer)

(HULK)

(Smash)
I read the book. Its fantastic, and should translate relatively well to TV. I don't think the previews have given much, if anything, away. I haven't seen it yet obviously, but I'm expecting it to be good.

Tru Blood has gotten real awful this season too. Hopefully this show ends up being a good summer show, there aren't many.

Just about half way through the first book. Need to finish it before I watch. The story is a trilogy of books.

I'll be watching. I thought the first book was pretty good and then it went downhill pretty fast. They were writing with the intention of translating to TV all along though, so hopefully this is pretty good.

True Blood Season Four was horrific. I stopped watching it after that season and never looked back.

The Strain looks really good. FX has had some damn good original programming, so I'm excited to watch this. It has to be better than last summer's TV distraction, Under the Dumb... I mean Dome.

Seriously, that was f'in terrible. Got my DVR set to record The Strain and hoping it is good. All the BS reality TV is just not cuttin' it for me. :D

Bump. Watching this right after True Blood. Should be interesting juxtaposition.

Opening scene left me a little disappointed, deviated from the book in a kinda corny way. Hope it improves.

I'm about a half hour behind so I can skip commercials. So far, I'm getting disappointed with the deviations from the book. Certain things are being presented earlier for no real reason that I can see, and I think it's robbing you viewers of some of the great suspense of the book. Hope it improves

how did it differ?
The book reader doesn't know what killed everyone for quite a while. Also, the pawnshop owner is potentially a quack for awhile, you don't see the heart thing until way way later.

Makes sense. They'all probably dial it back after the pilot.

Just watched this on my DVR. I'll give it a few more episodes but my expectations are much lower now.

The show that HULK is describing sounds a lot better. This one seems to be revealing too much too soon, and I say that as somebody who came into this with no idea about the story aside from the vampire thing.

lol I was gonna make a snide remark about vampires, I think every show requires cooking or a vampire. If we could only combine this premise!

Nice to see Walder Frey get some more work but I didnt feel like this was anything special. The lead actor has the charisma of sawdust.

Tend to agree. Halfway through Ep.1 (where the airport guy's getting his ### handed to him by ... whatever that is...) and I'm really hoping for more.

The acting thus far has been hollow and weak. Particularly Eph (lead CDC guy) and Gus (gangbanger guy). I'm kinda okay with Gus being a flat character though, as he was pretty 1 dimensional in the book. Eph though, he's layered and complicated and was a very interesting character in the book. I don't think this guy is portraying him well.

I'm not a fan of how they messed with the plot.

Still hope this finds its footing though.

Stoll was great on House of Cards (the only reason I powered through most of that first season, really), but yeah, he's rough here. That character is terrible.

I nearly changed the channel during the counseling session.

Xtreme cooking with American vampires. and zombies.

Non-book reader, and I enjoyed the premier a lot. Seems like it's going to mix vampire lore with science, and not hold back on the gore.

That scene with the big bad in the warehouse (poor airport guy) was really cool.

This implementation of vampires is about the coolest one I'm familiar with. The book really delved into it, and its unique and awesome.

Me too, non-book reader and I enjoyed it as well. I actually didn't mind the lead guy. It looks like it has potential.

theYeah, I'm sure he'll get better.

Like revealing way too much, I think it's just a typical pilot mistake that's probably a necessary evil. They needed to really push Eph as a the weird, tortured genius really quickly.

That seems to be more of a "network mistake", but I guess FX can't rely on millions giving it more time simply because it's FX (like many of us probably will).

Hopefully, they'll slow it down now and start to build some real layers here.

I blame the writing. Oh, and Sean Astin.

I'm not a fan of how they messed with the plot.
We're not going to have to read this all season, are we?
No, you won't.

My main gripe there is that in the book its a slower reveal about it being vampires. I disagree with how they did it.

There were other changes, and while you may have missed a little fun, they're not game changing.

So, unless they do something way outside the book moving forward, I probably won't comment on that aspect again. Now, if the acting doesn't improve, you'll keep hearing about that from me.

HULK SMASH PUNY ACTORS

Better than most of the crap on right now
Yep. 100,000 times better than Under the Dome. I thought the sizzler reel at the end showed promise. I didn't think the acting was that bad, but, again, I'm holding this show up against the extremely low summer show bar.

Yeah, watched the first episode, it was alright for a summer watch. The whole autopsy scene was the best part.

Not sure about giant grim reaper baddie flying backwards down a hallway. Had a Scooby-Doo vibe.

I thought it was entertaining. I like that they appear to be explaining the origin of vampires and giving it a more realistic vibe. Agree though that the grim reaper character is a but dumb.

Watched it tonight. I enjoyed it, even if it was cheesy at times but I enjoy the hell out of the Walking Dead so I'm probably dead on demo here. That said, time to start up the non-book reader thread.
