UTOPIA Explained: The Social ExperimentAugust 6 2014 5:47 PM

'Is this a documentary or a reality show?' might be your first question.
It’s neither. First and foremost, UTOPIA is a social experiment. Fifteen people enter a new world and must build a new society from the ground up. Right away, they’re left completely on their own. In Utopia, moments will be caught, not shaped. There will be no production crew inside Utopia at any time.

We’ve installed 129 inconspicuous cameras — some dangling from trees, others wedged between floorboards — that are never to be addressed. At no point will community members pour their hearts out, confessional-style, in attempts to heighten drama or shift your perception of their characters. UTOPIA isn’t a stage — it’s a window.

These are the Utopians' real lives, their only lives. What’s important is the conversations they'll have, the work they'll accomplish, and the way they’ll make this place whatever they want it to be.

Have you ever stared in wonder at an ant farm? Well, this one is bigger — and it can talk!

You'll be zooming in on our large-scale petri dish, our sandbox cluttered with opposing voices, an ever-adapting life form wriggling around somewhere in Southern California. UTOPIA: A world within a world. How will the two collide?

There’s no prize. There's no specific goal. This is a living soap opera — reality TV in its purest form. And you get to be there every step of the way.http://www.utopiatv.com/about

Behold UTOPIA, a bold new series based on the hit Dutch program. Watch what happens as 15 pioneering Americans wave goodbye to the lives they’ve known, move to a remote location, and set out to create a society from scratch. They’ve got limited supplies, wildly diverse backgrounds, and zero bathrooms. What could go wrong -- besides everything? The Utopians will make every decision about how they live and work. Will they choose democracy or dictatorship? Capitalism or socialism? Fidelity or free love? Which religion, if any, will prevail? Will they punish or forgive? Keep or share? Are those chickens friends….or food? If not now, when? It is all up to them. This is not a game. There is no prize. This is UTOPIA: reality TV in its truest form.http://www.utopiatv.com

A little more info

Contact the Utopian pioneers.
How do we get in touch?!
Utopian pioneers are not allowed to leave the compound. But they are allowed to let others in for commercial purposes only. Family and/or friends are not allowed to do business with the 15 Utopians. But how do people like us, or company's, get in touch with the Utopian people?! The answer to that is simple really. We can just fill in a contact form on the UtopiaTV website. The editorial office will choose what goes in and out, so not every single mail will reach the Utopians. That scenario would be a total disaster.

But wait.. They can receive emails? Yeah. If they decide to buy a laptop, phone or tablet with an internet connection. Until then they just have to settle with old fashioned letters with stamps. Not these stamps. The editorial office will decide which emails can be printed and placed in their mailbox.
Won't they have any contact with family and friends?
Yes they do have contact. Every pioneer will get letters from their loved ones every single month. And they can also write back every single month. Only once a year every pioneer can choose to invite their parents, family, relatives and/or friends who are allowed to stay in Utopia for approximately three hours. It is up to the pioneers to decide when they need them the most.
What if a pioneer wants to leave Utopia?
That is possible. Every pioneer with plans to leave Utopia voluntarily will have to go to the 'dark room'. (We haven't found the right English word for that room yet lol.) In that room they can talk with the crew behind the scenes. That is also the room where they change their batteries during the day for their microphones. They must think about their choice for at least 24 hours. In those 24 hours a psychologist will talk to them (out of sight) in the hope they will change their minds. If not, the pioneer is free to go and will be replaced by a new one.

Note: This is how the system works in The Netherlands. It may be a little bit different in the US. The pioneers will probably never be allowed to use social media or to watch the livestreams. Their internet browser will have many restrictions and they can't download every app they want.

A Look At The Compound

http://www.utopiamadness.com/2014/08/some-inside-information-about-utopia.html

More info

Can we vote for Utopians? Not all 15 pioneers can stay in Utopia for an entire year. Every month three pioneers will be eliminated. Each pioneer has three votes to give away every single month and they must use them. It is not allowed to nominate yourself. The three pioneers with the most votes will be nominated and can be send home. The 1000 passport holders with the most stamps and points can be a part of this groundbreaking social experiment. Because those 1000 votes will evolve into three votes on three different pioneers inside Utopia. And maybe that last vote is enough to get someone nominated.

UtopiaTV will also introduce three new potential Utopians each month. Everybody with a passport can vote for their favorite potential pioneer. The last two standing will get a temporary visa to stay in Utopia. Four days later the 15 pioneers will choose who can stay and who has to leave the Utopia compound. The lucky number one has a hard task because he/she has to send back home one nominated pioneer 24 hours later.http://www.utopiamadness.com/2014/08/utopia-nominations.html

Tom, to avoid issues, for the picture you linked to could you instead please link to whatever page on that site shows the picture rather than hotlinking directly to the photo? Thanks.

There's a British TV show by the same name that's is really good.

Edit: great timing, the second season just ended.

I have seen the British show and these are nothing like each other. This one is more social experiment/reality tv and that one is a conspiracy drama show.

Check out the trailer for a better look at the show, they did something very similar in the Netherlands that most seemed to like if that helps you any.If not just look through some of the links I provided and it shows what this is all about.

This looks like it could be interesting, but it could very easily be extremely dull. I guess it depends how interesting the people inside are, and what they decide to do. I'm gonna set the DVR and see how it starts to play out. Not planning (for now) on checking out the live streams at all.

Totally agree with your first comment so the casting here will be very crucial into how this either takes off or just fades away into another bad reality show.

I feel like this had been tried a few times before and they all ended up terrible.

Pretty sure "Kid Nation" was so bad that CBS had to publicly apologize for it.
Fox: ‘Utopia’ Is Not A Grown Up ‘Kid Nation

"It’s got some similarities, but the format is very, very different”

The head of Fox’s reality programming department insists the new “social experiment” UTOPIA is not a grown up version of the 2007 CBS series KID NATION.

“I love KID NATION,” Simon Andreae told a gathering of TV critics yesterday in Beverly Hills.
“But, if you remember, when the 40 or so kids go into that desert environment at the beginning, the producers are very explicit about who are going to be initial rulers, what they are going to eat for supper, the games they play and the challenges they do.

“This is this is not a structured show at all. There’s no prize. There are almost no rules at all. We set them up, and we watch.

“In terms of the fundamental desire to see whether a team of people can collaborate in order to do things a bit differently and offer suggestions is a living example to the world, then, yes, it’s got some similarities, but the format is very, very different.”

UTOPIA — based on a format created in Holland by super-producer John de Mol — will attempt to see if 15 individuals from different backgrounds can form their own society and live together in a remote location for one year.

So far, producers have been able to narrow more than 5000 applicants down to approximately 40. Final casting decisions will be made in the coming weeks.

I'll check it out. This season of big brother has shown boring cast and no drama leads to boring show so cast is very important.

Anyone willing to take my bet that after the show is over it will turn out that there are professional actors on the show?

Not a chance I take that bet but we do get the cast reveal here in a few days so who knows what route they take with this.Fox is dropping a ton of money into this show so nothing will surprise me and honestly I just want to be entertained.

Reading about the Dutch version:

"In no time residents conjured their primitive environment into a place with modern conveniences.

The slogan now is: 'a soap opera with real people.

I have to assume they tried to find the most different 15 people they could find, right? A religious nut, an extreme atheist , a hunter and a vegan, a prude and a party gal...etc. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not expecting much.

For the record, I liked Kid Nation.

Based on the interviews I have no doubts they want this to just be a huge mixing bowl with all types of characters and I'm right there with you on giving it a shot and I will be the first one to admit it's complete garbage if it is.

Kid Nation had great potential until the lawyers got involved.

Here is the cast

http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20302134_20845210,00.html#30203467

Had to throw a lawyer in to mess it up
Two things that stick out:

1) The homeless dude is wearing a watch.

2) The vegan chick who is all about natural things obviously had those double D's implanted in her. I always find that funny.
1)No longer homeless(for now),watch was an odd touch but who knows how long he's been homeless?

2)God Bless her for doing that

Big fan of Nikki and Bri so far

Another vote for Kid Nation

Everytime I see: unemployed, model, youtube, I think "actor".
Big Brother has taught us that very well and with the producer from BB the casting for me really wasn't much of a surprise as they always went for these types of people for the most part. Now let's see how they react(or act as you say)to what's being thrown at them here.As I've said before this will either be really good or flop rather quickly if the cast isn't solid.

It won't flop - there are 14 versions of Real Housewives that proves that.

So that means you're in then, right?

If it turns into that I promise I will never pimp another show here!

A little bit more info on the show

Fun facts we’re excited to share with you!
  • Once we flip them on, our 24/7 live streams will never switch off. Each new day will generate over 280 hours -- or 10TB, digitally speaking -- of footage.
  • We can’t stress this enough: In Utopia, there are no rules. This is a true microcosm, independently alive, its test subjects making everything up as they go along.
  • No production crew will be inside Utopia at any time -- just 129 high-definition robotic cameras operated in a control room far away from the Utopians. Producers have curated the environment, but no one can accurately predict the experience. We’ll all be watching this human ant farm take shape together.
  • Even without cameras, our year-long sequester would be an unheralded social experiment. Throwing 15 outspoken Americans into a giant sandbox with no fixed agenda other than “Build something great!”? That’s madness!
  • Speaking of which: Inside Utopia’s “water tower” is a massive camera providing LED moonlight.
  • There’s no prize. Utopia has no “goal” save what its members decides on, together. The cows are so vital to the community, they’re practically main characters.
  • It’s the birth of a new society... and maybe new life. One of the First 15 is pregnant!
  • Participants could easily hop Utopia’s low-slung fences -- yet they can never leave.
  • YOU, however, may enter! If the Utopians decide to host public events, Passport Holders are welcome.
  • Casting is ongoing! Our regular replacement process means Utopia will constantly be seeking fresh blood -- and it could be yours...
http://www.utopiatv.com/news/detail/94/utopia-unlike-any-other-show
And some more info from the Executive Producer(video interview inside the compound)

http://www.utopiamadness.com/2014/08/julie-chang-interviews-jon-kroll-inside.html

Live feeds start the 29th of August and all you need is the passport from the site to view them(free and pay options)

http://www.utopiatv.com/about-passport

My suggestion is if you want to watch the feeds check out the free ones first and then if you get hooked go to the pay option($4.99 a month).

Let's set down some realistic expectations. This show will be a "success" if it doesn't get canceled by the end of the run. I mean, this could be another "I wanna marry Harry" where they air five or six then pull the plug and put the rest online and forget about it. Best case I think for this is ABC's "Whodunit?" from last season. At least they aired every episode before getting canceled. This is not going to be the social phenomenon the first season of Survivor is or anything. The dream is that this lasts in its timeslot for however many weeks it runs.
Fox has put some big bucks into this show and has devoted 2 nights a week(an hour each)so this is a huge gamble for them without any doubts. My expectation is to see it play out the entire year but if it starts to falter it won't surprise me a bit to see it either get canned or moved.

Decent read here

Our Utopians won’t see an inch of their new home before they move in this Friday, August 29. Their introduction to Utopia will come as a total surprise, a headfirst dive into the unknown. But that same degree of secrecy doesn’t apply to those of us on the outside itching to get a look at this crazy habitat!

We’ve already explored the plant life of Utopia and gotten a glimpse at our control center. Today we’re turning our focus toward some of the site’s semi-secret physical features. You could call them “hidden gems,” maybe “Easter Eggs.” Or just “idiosyncratic objects buried in weird places.” Let’s see what’s out there!

  • Half-buried near the lake is a rowboat. Right now it’s covered in grass and wildflowers, the product of hydroseeding...but should Utopians want to dig out the rowboat and use it, they can.
  • Fish might not be “hidden gems” so much as “very visible wildlife,” but about 400 of them -- bass, bluegill, and catfish -- populate the Utopia lake. And they are ready to breed.
  • A wall of the house that’s already populated by plenty of random antiques (think rusty coffee grinder, butter churn, mason jars, a baseball) actually hides a box of vegetable seeds.
  • A malfunctioning tractor that could work, provided the Utopians figure out exactly which replacement parts they must order to fix it.
  • Deep within the junk bucket in Casa Utopia is the key for the main water spigot just inside the gates. Will they find it on Day 1, or thirst their lives away?
  • An antique washing machine that, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think should be used to plunge a toilet.
  • Up in the loft of the barn are rolls of cotton in paper sacks that could be used for bedding.
  • That thing on wheels that isn’t a tractor? It’s an old-timey generator. (In this setting, it’s just a device to support a camera without the camera feeling intrusive. It’s essentially a prop. But in a previous life? Generator.

Wait, so this hasn't already been filmed? Oof. Now I'm getting skeptical. I thought it had already been filming and going well. Essentially, this thing is a total gamble.

I hope if this thing does end up getting cancelled, they still make them live there for a year.

They move into the compound tomorrow and the live feeds start then. They then have the 1st broadcast on the 7th of Sept with tons of footage to fit into 2 hours

I get it now. But I had assumed that they had been filming this like they do Survivor. So that they had been there for about 4 months already. I'm still in, but this is a huge gamble.

No doubts it's a huge gamble. They are giving the show 3 nights the first week and 2 nights going forward for an entire year(if it makes it that long). The cast will either make or break this and judging by the interviews it's a very different mix so I expect fireworks to happen rather quickly in a fight over how to get things done and in what order.

The lawyer though sounds like he will be completely useless but that's not really a surprise is it? :o

Not that it's a sign of future success in the US, but apparently this show is big in Holland.

There's a lot of potential for this show.. I wonder if they'll do stuff like create laws, law enforcement, and some kind of holding cell. You gotta figure that eventually one of these guys or girls is going to try to become dictator.

It is totally up to the cast as to what direction this show goes but I would assume at some point they would start making laws and such.I'm sure they are hoping someone tries the dictator route and I know I would love to see that unfold, could be some quality entertainment!
