Shooting in Ottawa (1 Viewer)

I was hoping that it was just some crazy with a personal grudge but it isn't. The shooter had converted to Islam. He wanted to go join ISIS but had his passport revoked.

This was an act of terrorism. It appears to be in retaliation for Canada's parliament voting to join us in our air assault against ISIS. Leaders from ISIS have already praised this guy and called for more. Once again radical Islam manages to distinguish itself from all other religions.
Ditto...My biggest fear is terrorists starting to just randomly shoot up places. It's much more live-able when it's just a random crazy guy.

What I don't get is this influx of people wanting to join ISIS's ranks...I mean, I feel like every day there is a story of some US Citizen who was caught trying to join ISIS.
Maximum amount of fear with a single killer. The shooter dies, but "normal" loses more ground.

The terrorists acts from crazed Muslims will reach every corner of the globe. When religious zealots have no respect for human life and are willing to die themselves it is a little frightening. These have to be terribly unhappy and insecure individuals.

Is there any indication this is anything more than a lone gunman?

Other than his race?

Hoping later that they show there was information to make this link otherwise.....media :(
What does his race have to do with him being a lone gunman or not?

I'm having trouble seeing the difference between this dude shooting people because he is a religious zealot with no respect for human life and some other random shooting where the dude is angry and nuts and not taking his meds.

The main difference is that in this case there are millions of people rooting him on. He's not a sole actor here, he's one of a radical group which presents the gravest threat to our civilization and our way of life since the National Socialists. I don't think I am overstating this.

It's the same psychology of young people that join street gangs. There's an appeal to belong to something, especially if there is a structure that is missing in their lives.

1) ISIS is not a threat to our civilization and your way of life. Our society is not going to crumble because of ISIS.

2) So far everything points to that he is a sole actor, it does not appear to be a conspiracy.

3) There are far more copy cats of crazed lunatics shooting people because they are young, sick, and angry than because they follow ISIS. When that changes let me know.

He was a lone nut-job who was called mentally unstable by his 'friends' and had a long criminal history. And a threat to our civilization? Come on Captain Hyperbole. This is over the top even for you.

ISIS is a bigger threat than the soviet union was?

ISIS USSR.

We need a war on 4-letter acronyms that have 2 S's in them. This would never happen again and the world would be at peace.

ISIS is a bigger threat than the soviet union was?
Not ISIS by itself, but radical Islam as a whole. Yes I believe it is.

For one thing, the Soviet Union had leadership that was rational enough to accept Mutual Assured Destruction as a deterrent against the use of nuclear weapons. I don't believe that radical Islamists are willing to do the same. Based on everything I read, see, and hear, the radical Islamists are quite willing to kill themselves and their loved ones if we die as well. Even the Japanese pilots who willingly flew to their deaths didn't want to see their families at risk. This is a new kind of enemy, which we've never faced before.

Be interested to know if their are more radical Islmasists out there or more people involved with gangs and drugs. Impossible to define I know, but still...

I think you are being over the top on this one as well. There are literally holes filled with bodies being discovered every week in latin america from the drug gangs. That violence spills onto our streets every day in cities across the Country.

All these people have mental and emotional problems and these are the outlets they have found...no difference in my book.

Edit to add that it is important to me that we do everything in our power to keep them from being armed like they are in the Marines. If the trend becomes just random shooting attacks there is going to a lot of bloodshed in this country because of the ease of access to weapons.

Imagine if ISIS, or some other Islamic extremist group or nation, got their hands on nuclear weapons. Would that change your mind? Killing gang bangers one-by-one suddenly seems insignificant by comparison.

apparently the Soviet Union, who had such weapons, many many of them, and was on the verg of using them on an occasion or two was much less of a threat than isis with no such weapons

it makes me wonder if the weapons are truly a threat

nukes don't destroy our society, people do...and all that nonsense

It has also emerged that Prime Minister Stephen Harper hid in a cupboard in parliament for about 15 minutes during Wednesday's attack as MPs sharpened flagpoles to use as spears against the gunman.
God I can't wait for Harper to be gone. What a little #####.

Those two, Rob Ford or damn near anyone else >>>>>>> Harper

As I was driving yesterday, I turned on some talk radio to get some more information about this shooting. Turns out it's Obama's fault.

For those of you who dont know what the "Highway of Heroes" is... CHeck this link, please: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Highway_401#Highway_of_Heroes

Cpl. Cirillo will be driven down this highway at 6-7pm (approx) eastern time tonight... In what will be a BEAUTIFUL ceremony.

If you can find a canadian news stream (cbc, ctv) they will all be showing it.

Dont think there is a more fitting and honorable tribute to fallen soldiers, anywhere on earth

They've been on the highway since noon or so. A pic here from outside Ottawa.

... and a couple hours later further down the road

That second one is especially powerful

Holy ####. Straight out of a movie:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ottawa-shooting-the-face-to-face-encounter-that-ended-the-attack-on-parliament-1.2812802

Hearing gunshots, Vickers grabbed his side arm, an automatic pistol, and immediately ran out. His security team, who had been chasing Bibeau, yelled to Vickers that the suspect was hiding in the alcove.

...

In one motion, sources told CBC News he dove to the floor around the pillar, at the feet of Bibeau, turning on his back as he landed and simultaneously firing his weapon upwards at Bibeau.

Bibeau was hit multiple times and fell to the ground. Vickers kept firing, emptying his entire clip.

As soon as Bibeau dropped, the rest of the security team sprinted forward and opened fire.
