I'm losing my mind (1 Viewer)

By no means do I claim to be incredibly smart. But, my whole life I've been able to remember almost anything, in great detail, very vividly. Growing up, I just thought everyone had a memory like that. But when I got older, I realized that my memory was much better than most other people. I would actually get very frustrated when people couldn't remember very minor details that seemed so easy for me to recall. It almost felt like they weren't trying hard enough to remember.

Well, now I'm 40 and I can already notice that I'm losing this ability. I can still remember a lot more than most, but at the same time, I can't remember things like I used to. I had a process that I would go through, where I would cycle images or letters through my head and it could easily fill in clues to what I was thinking.

It's scary. I just wonder if it's going to go quick. Kind of like the saying "The brightest flame burns quickest." Again, not saying I'm bright in the smart sense, but more in the sense that maybe my brain was working harder. I don't know. And I'm sure it sounds silly. But who knows.

I'll be sitting on the couch and my daughter will ask me a question and I'll say, "Well, it's one of those things.... uh.... those... what are they called?" I can see the object in my brain. But I can't find the word. So I'll try and describe the object, but more words start to fail me.

I asked my doctor but he said that's normal for getting old. But I don't think he understood exactly what I was asking. I know a lot of you guys are getting old with me. Just wondering if anyone else notices their mind going?

Yes, I seem to notice my mind slowing, and am only 36. I will sign up for lumosity once I know if my gf is in as well. I don't have a whole lot of intelligence to lose, so I have to hold on to the little that is there.

I feel the same exact way, GB.

I have a fairly amazing recall and memory of things from years to decades ago.

It can be frustrating when other people don't remember those things.

My dad is in his 60's and he's forgotten things that transpired a few days ago let alone months or years ago.

Frankly I'm sick of remembering all this crap... i want to start forgetting... you started noticing this at 40? Great.. i only have a few years to go.

I started noticing it a lot at 40. But it probably started happening slowly late in my 30's.

Like you really remember when it started.

It tends to level off a bit. You adjust to it. For instance, you ask your wife to introduce herself so that when you're with your wife and you bump into an old friend whose name you don't recall it doesn't become an uncomfortable situation.

I wrote up a 3-page document the other day, thought up a name for it, went to save it and was told "File already exists...". I had written the same document, even giving it the same name, three days before. At age 58, it's gone past funny, past embarrassing, to downright frightening.

I'm 44 and sharp as a ####### tack.

Now my body? That's another story, I think it thinks its about 60.

This article might help answer your questions. If it really bothers you, consult a specialist just to be sure. There are also excercises that can help your memory remain more functional.

Weird topic for a thread when I swear I remember reading another identical thread like a day or so ago with more replies than this.

Yes. I forget words or pronounce #### wrong all the time now. It's right in my head, it just doesn't come out of my mouth correctly. 41 now and I've noticed it over the past 2-3 years.
