Wilmington, NC Area--What can you tell me about the place? (1 Viewer)

My wife and I are starting to look around for a place to retire in the next 3-4 years and the Wilmington, NC area has entered the picture. I know a little about the area as I've been going to the beach at Ocean Isle and Sunset for years, so I've driven past/through Wilmington. But I've not spent any time in the city itself or around it.

So do we have any Wilmington folks on this board who can give me some insight to the area?

Crime rate is higher than it should be. No sports other than HS and UNCW. Golf is so-so. Landscape is as flat as a pool table. Travel from ILM is expensive, might need to book from RDU or Myrtle Beach. Small downtown, not corporate at all.

I visit friends in Wilmington often. There are some great restaurants there, and although downtown isn't big, it's very cool. There are lots of restaurants downtown, and it is located along the Cape Fear River. Wilmington isn't cheap as far as real estate. You are near lots of beaches such as Wrightsville, Carolina, Kure, Topsail, etc.

From what I see on Zillow, inland the prices are reasonable...compared to the DC area at least.

Visited there probably 4 years ago.

Had a burrito place called Flaming Amy's that was awesome.

That's all I've got.
