bolded is a pretty amazing song IMO

Its hard to answer your question because there are so many different types. For example:

New Country -Basically pop music. This is the new pop since hip hop dominates mainstream. This is Taylor Swift, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, etc.

Old Country - This is the great old, real country - Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie, Waylon, etc. The stuff Nashville was built on.

Texas/Alt Country - This is kind of a combination of old country and rock. Its really great - people like Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc.

Where do you think your tastes lie?

Thanks!Probably more with the New Country, but I'm def interested in all types of music and so would like to get some recs for each.TIA

Was listening to a lot of country for a while but I guess I got kinda bored with it because over the past year or so I really haven't been listening to much at all.

As whoknew said already, there are so many "sub-genres" within country music it's kind of hard to pin it down to a few songs.

I like to listen to Keith Urban, although he's certainly a country/pop hybrid. Alison Krauss has always been a favorite of mine. Some of the other artists I always enjoyed included Lady Antebellum, Craig Morgan, Josh Turner, Gary Allan...

If you are going through a crappy time in your life, have been drinking a lot, and have found comfort in the feeling of depression then Alt Country is for you. The list below are albums. Alt country lends itself to more of an album format as opposed to singles:

Uncle Tupelo: No Depression, March 16-20 1992

Son Volt: Trace

Wilco: AM, Being There

Old 97's: Too Far To Care, Fight Songs, Wreck Your Life (and then some)

Whiskeytown: Strangers Almanac

BR549: (black telephone)

Junior Brown: Greatest Hits

Jason & The Scorchers: Reckless Country Soul

If you are generally happy, love your wife, love your kids, and love your country... you would be best to go with new country.

If you think all things retro are cool, ride a hardtail motorcycle, comb your hair in a pompadore, and have tat sleves... then go with the old country.

I'd rather have you listen to that hilarious Time/Life series with all the guys in rhinestone suits & pompadours with names like Ferlin Husky to get your grounding in country music than ANYTHING from Nashville this century. The dumbed-down pop music & redneck catchphrases set to music are obvious, but even the Rascal Flats/Antebellum stuff is warmed-up, twanged ABBA/Eagles. You need know but one word to get a grounding in real, valuable country music: Texas. enjoy -

Country music is such a varied genre that it's hard to break down in to pieces, as many have said. If you like the new country stuff, Brad Paisley is easily the best thing going. Miranda Lambert is fantastic on the women's side. Josh Turner is excellent and somewhat original.

For my money, I'd rather listen to George Strait or one of the hundreds of Texas country artists who never get their due. But if you like the new stuff, I'd strongly suggest picking up "Mud on the Tires" by Paisley to wet your whistle.

True country listen to George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today"

Anything made in the last 20 years is pop music.

Download all Garth Brooks and George Strait songs you can. Also get

Travis Tritt - Great day to be alive

Chris Cagle - Chicks dig it

Charlie Daniels Band - Devil went down to Georgia

Newer guys download all Zac Brown, Jason Aldean, Eric Church

I know people are going to laugh, but I really like the Dixie Chicks.

My favorites:

There's Your Trouble

Wide Open Spaces

Traveling Soldier

The Long Way Around

Love all kinds of music, including Country. Old School - Mom listened to the likes of Marty Robbins growing up. That being said, love new country as well. CMA Fest is a blast. Going to TigerJam in Vegas in late April, Keith Urban (with John Mayer) headlining at Mandalay Bay, and seeing Darius Rucker the night before at the Sunset Station Casino.

Good recommendations on this list. You might want to throw in a little country rap with Colt Ford to really mix it up some!

Gentle on my Mind

Zac Brown Band is my favorite current band, lots of awesome songs.

Can't go wrong with Garth.

Classic country is where it's at though. At work I'll turn on one of the Classic country radio stations on iTunes, most of those are pretty solid.

Few of my favorite recent songs:

Johnny Cash

Hank Williams

Alan Jackson

Garth Brooks

Diamond Rio

Brooks and Dunn

Tim McGraw

Reba MacEntire

Montgomery Gentry

Brad Paisley

Zac Brown Band

Jason Aldean

Sugarland

No reason to laugh. Dixie Chicks are very good.
There was a chapter in the book Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs where the author concluded that the Dixie Chicks are the new Rolling Stones, and teenage girls are the new teenage boys. Not sure if that matters at all... but it's the first thing I think about when I hear about them. I think their good.

I would try Gary Allan, he has a great mix of "new" country and classic country. Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown Band and Jason Aldean are also very good. But if I could only pick one country artist to listen to it would be Gary Allan.

I really liked the Crazy Heart soundtrack. Some great songs on there and the Dude can actually sing.
I agree; I was surprised by how good that movie was.
Check out Ryan Binghams Mescalito. Great stuff.
I loved Bingham before that movie. I think he was the main reason I listened to that soundtrack though. There is a reason that song (album) won an Oscar. As for the movie itself --- eh, its okay. The music is great though.

I got hooked on country by the older Tim McGraw ("Next 30 Years", "I Like it, I Love it", "BBQ Stain", "Don't Take the Girl", etc.) Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts. I don't listen to it as much anymore and I'm not really sure why.

Of all bands to mention, my buddy is the steel guitar player for him. Great band
Longtime Gary Allan fan. Just saw him at the Austin Rodeo Gala in February. It Ain't The Whiskey is a damn fine song. Nice to see him coming out with something new.

I'll also include the obligatory fact that new country sucks and Americana/alt country is the only thing worth listening to with some very rare exceptions.

That is a great song. They knew it wouldn't do as well as the previous two due to it being a little darker but it's a great song nonetheless, p probably my favorite song off the album. Gary made an unexpected come back with this album. Good to see. Aging singers don't fair too well these days.

They were on the main stage on the final night of CA fest last year but haven't heard if they will be there yet this year. They were on Letterman last week.

The fact that "Her Man" was released 18 years ago is yet another thing that makes me feel old.

That's before my time as a country fan. I grew up around Nashville but always hated country music. When my son was a baby, it's all that would calm him down, though. Go figure. I've been listening to more country since then, about 4 years ago. Never would've guessed it

Eta: On side note, we moved in next door to my buddy who's in the band about 5 years ago. I didn't have a clue who Gary Allan was. My wife did. Oof

Let the Records Play by Pearl Jam sounds like a country tune to me. I know they claim its blues or whatever which they never do, but I hear Shania Twain in that groove. Very odd song for them.

Joel Crouse

First release was pretty much a pop country song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIGSOfMmBec

But the rest of the album includes some old school country sound for young artist:
