Tyrant trailer

ETA-- There's some of this too!!

From the producers of Homeland. I'll give it a shot.

Bassam "Barry" Al Fayeed is from the fictional war-torn country of Abbudin. He has been living in self-selected exile in Los Angeles for nearly 20 years. Barry, the younger son of Baladi's dictator, ends his exile to return with his American family to his homeland for his nephew's wedding. His arrival leads to a dramatic culture clash, as he reluctantly returns to the familial and national politics he once left.
Tyrant has been met with mostly positive reviews. On Metacritic, the show holds a score of 61 out of 100, based on 14 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a rating of 79%, based on 14 reviews, with an average score of 6.1 out of 10.

It has an interesting premise but I get a Breaking bad vibe already. Hes just an ordinary teacher asked to run the family business... of ruthlessly ruling an Arab oil country.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Read a couple of reviews which looked pretty good. One called it a ME version of The Godfather. Not that it was on that level but storyline. Then comes Sepinwall... Guess you can say he's not a fan. Called it a ME version of Dallas. "story behind the making more interesting than the show".

Decent-to-good premier. Hopefully, the son gets killed soon.
Going to watch it tonight, looks interesting, but the buzz from critics has me going in with somewhat low expectations.
Watched it last night, by no means is it an instant classic so far, but wife and I thought it was decent. FWIW

I thought there was some good stuff here

spoilers...

I'm disappointed that they killed off the dad...he seemed like a complex character...I'm hoping we'll see him in flashbacks.

The brother was over-the-top bad, but not totally out of line with real offspring of dictators

The wife and kids of the lead are poorly drawn, but hopefully they can rectify that

Overall, I give it a B

I watched the pilot today On Demand today. Very good and I can see it going places. Barry's son's arc seems highly predictable though. I'm in!

Killing off the dad seemed to be a necessity to the plot although I guess they could have delayed it and made the family stay for another reason. I liked the dialog between Barry and his family. It showed how naive they are which I'm sure will be a recurring dynamic.

The first episode was ok. I'll give it a shot but don't think I'll last too long. The acting is not that good, especially the rest of Barry's family. Some far-fetched things like that he could just live in the US without any risk to his or his family's life. That his father would let him stay in a hotel without some massive security. And that it seems like he didn't realize what his father has been up to and was hearing it for the first time from his friend. His kids and wife don't realize what grandpa is really like either?

The first episode seemed way too rushed but hopefully it settles in now that the characters have been introduced.

Bin Laden had family members living i the US pre-9/11. I don't know that they had any extra security even after Al Qaeda attacks on US bases/Ships in the ME.

I'm sure grampa had extra security at the hotel

He knew his father was a bad-###-- that's why he did everything he could to keep his distance. Wife and kids should have definitely had more awareness....

He walked right out of the hotel, past the sleeping security guard. And I think bin Laden probably had a little more secretive of a family background compared to a family who have ruled over a country for generations. If there were threats to blow up the wedding, you'd think they would also think of maybe kidnapping the President's son.

Just some things that stood out. Like I said, hopefully they just stretched things a bit to set up the story but it's a bad sign for future episodes, imo.

watched the first ep, and will give it a couple more, but I'm not completely sold. the lead actor is just way too bland. and his family is unbelievably stupid. they obviously know his dad his this big dictator, and his brother is a psycho, but they constantly act like "hey, what's the big deal?"

and the sooner they kill off the son, the better.

but more screen time for psycho brother's wife, please. yowza.

I don't have an issue with the lead actor, but his family sucks.

Waste of a 2nd episode, IMO. And the acting is really poor. I'll give it a couple more shots but not looking good for me at this point.

I still have mixed feelings some good things, some bad things

Leila is among the hottest women on TV

Ep 2 gets a B- from me

I'm hoping that they are building something here....

I like it.
Me too. There's definitely worse on TV.
I'll say things like "That seems far fetched", but isn't that the point of entertainment? I don't let it bother me. I'm really interested to see where they go with this. FX usually has winners. But even their best shows seem to take time to develop. Americans and SOA come to mind. I almost didn't come back to their second seasons because it seemed so slow. But now, I love those shows.

Tyrant, on the other hand, seems to have me interested right away. Not sure why. But I'm definitely IN on this show.

Her in that purple dress in the most recent episode. WOW! I'm keeping that episode on the DVR for a while.

The google does turn up a nekkid pic or 2. And they're "not bad" at all.

I wasn't very impressed with the pilot, but finally got caught up. It's gotten pretty good, I think. My favorite of the new FX and AMC dramas this year outside of Fargo. Albeit, that's not a terribly high mark.

Interesting casting with Molly. Only time I'd seen her was on that terrible show where she played Joanna Garcia's sister (only reason I watched). I was pretty surprised to see her here, but she's pretty good in this role.

They sure do know how to cast smoking hot women.

Yeah, the son's gotta go. Maybe Gordon and Raff are just trying to make Chris Brody feel better.

Good enough, but not great I guess.

Hate the kids, the dramatic pauses after someone walks away every.single.time. need to go.

I'd be happy with just the main storyline and the Presidents wife walking around regardless if she's involved in the scene.

AVClub is tapping out, ending it's regular reviews (never gave an episode higher than a C).

I guess that's to be expected. While the show has real problems, the entire premise of these crazy Arabs needing to be saved by the cool-headed Westernized son (played by a British dude, no less) isn't going to play well unless executed almost flawlessly. They certainly aren't executing flawlessly, but there's still potential.

Really enjoyed tonights episode...no fruity sons, no I'm better than you daughters...

Barry and Jamal...nailed it

Still watching, like it don't love it. We'll see what happens when the #### hits the fan pretty soon. Couple episodes were really good, couple just ok...

i'm still watching since there's not many other options....and the prez wife. ;)
Same here, it's not terrible and the fact they're avoiding the kid's story lines has helped.

AVClub should have continued their reviews. The story ended not being as straight forward as I expected. Not sure where they go from here if it's picked up for season 2.

Oh, and Jamal = :moneybag:

The speed at which everything happens on the show is unrealistic but I didn't find it that far-fetched (better than SOA for example).

Renewed for a second season.

I'm excited for this. I really like this show and am looking forward to see what direction this goes in the second season.

Stopped watching about three episodes in. Thought the writing and acting were terrible, with no compelling characters beside the female eye candy.

I liked the first season ok....but holy crap, this second season is hitting on all cylinders......show is starting realize its potential here...for those who watched season one and are waffling on S2, do yourself a favor and watch this

I agree. This season has been much better. And I really liked the first season. It's been getting pretty good reviews, too.

I would encourage anybody who watched season one to check out season two. The show has improved greatly.
