General Rule Stuff

- Songs must have been released between 1980 and 1989.
- Any version (album, single edit, radio edit, remix etc.) of a song will be allowed, including live versions, but you must be able to produce the version of the song you select on your final mixtape, and once the song is taken in any form, it is off the board.
- There will be a one-hour timer for the first five rounds, and we'll switch to a 30min timer for rounds 6-20+. The timer will run from 10am-10pm EDT.
- You do NOT have to draft them in order of how they will appear on your tape.

In!

I I don't work at a computer though so can I leave my cell # with some of you to send me a text when I'm up?

Thanks!

In as long as we can avoid debates about genre purity
I'm in but worry about this too.
There will obviously be songs that fit into multiple genre, it's on each drafter to make the case for the genre they think the song should represent. If someone else disagrees, #### 'em.
it's your draft so you can make the rules but the scavenger hunt aspect of the Dealers Choice draft was kind of a fun twist. We could avoid some of the genre debates by replacing some of the sub-genres (e.g. New Jack Swing, New Romantics) with less ambiguous non-genre based categories (e.g. #1 Billboard single, title track off an album). Unless the sub-genres were the point to begin with.

Yeah this may be necessary to get to 20-25 categories, without getting into too many niche genres.

I don't recognize much of this as 80s. Aguilera was a child, Hannah Montana was 2000s I think, Selena Gomez? If you are drafting you might want to brush up.

Not sure WTH is wrong with you bleepholes but I deleted my post. I guess it is such a secret what was played in the 80s. Enjoy yourselves, sorry to have interrupted.

Thanks, feel free to participate, it kind of takes the suspense/fun out of a draft when someone posts the contents of "Now That's What I Call 80's" on page 1.

Since I don't have access to spotify though I think I end up missing out on the true value of these mixtape drafts, so a drafter slot is better used on someone else, but I'll join if you guys end up needing more people.

If I had the time I would draft and put a whoopin' on all of you but I'll cheer along. I guess I feel for the 80s like a lot of old folks love the 50s. Although I have to say there is a huge difference between music in say 80/81 then 84/85, then it takes a sharp turn IMO for the worse in the late 80s.

The 90s for example was just pure crap almost any way you slice it. Feel sorry for folks who grew up in that era, I was still in my early 20s but turned to a lot of underground dance music to get away from the pop/mainstream. 2000s and 2010s haven't been a lot better but every once in a while I find something. I can barely listen to the 2 Billboard top 100 stations down here in South Florida. And Rock n Roll has died. When the bands in their mid 50s and 60s eventually pass away, it just is gonna be the suxor. No shows to go to, nothing new coming down the pike, just awful.

Even bands like Metallica have been making mostly crap for the last many years. Saw their latest live show on DVD/BR, Thru the whatever, they still sound great and some of their songs from 20-30 years ago are awesome but give them another 10 years and I don't think they will be able to even play the songs. It looks painful some of the time for Lars on the skins.

So there, I am having my discussion without naming songs you rat bastards!

I'm in the same boat, I'll be youtubing/downloading as we go and uploading a final mix.

Finding tunes and putting up a mix on Spotify is easy. I'm sure there are plenty of folks that have Spotify and can do it in a jiffy.

11 in so far, still need to firm up some categories, likely looking at a Wednesday start.

If we go to some scavenger hunt types beyong 15 or so genre categories, some more categories we could add are

UK #1's

1st song off first album

Title tracks

Cover songs

Movie/TV "themes"

Breakup Songs

Songs associated with MTV/Music Videos

I like most of those, but I think the last two are going to be a lot more vague than the others. Not that it's an issue, just thinking out loud.

This is true, "One Hit Wonders" is also a classic 80s category, but that one can be tough to pin down as well.

Here's a semi-definitive list if you're talking US Top 40

ETA: there's a lot of crap on it.

Maybe he won't see the thread....

Anyone who's in, or really anyone in general, feel free to suggest/fine tune genres.
If you are talking about me....and I assume you are..it has been years since I thorougly nitpicked

I'm not gonna nitpick here. If someone choices the Scorpions as Hip Hop, go for it.

You are the commish, not me.

I'm not suggesting anything or contributing anything except to draft songs.

There was an 80s Movie theme in the Dealer's Choice Draft, so would you exclude those songs?

With cover songs, you could do cover songs of 80's hits.

Duets, mixes of artists from different groups (Like Kenny Rogers with Dolly Parton - Islands in the Stream - bad example that nobody would pick!)

MMMM, I used to be pretty bad at nitpicking. Who was worse than me?

This is a glass half full, glass half empty argument.

I look at this list and see lots of brilliant stuff (arguably my taste may be the problem here) amongst the dross.

ETA: there's a lot of crap on it.
Yeah, likely a lot of stuff that peaked 20-40 on there, but some good ones as well.
On second review, it's kind of an interesting. There are some artists on there who've had long and successful careers so I'd never figure them as one hit wonders.

ETA: scarcity is a hard commodity to find in a music draft. 80s one hit wonders is a lot deeper than NL second basemen.

This is an 80s draft, he won't touch it.

Anything pre 1977 and he'd be in.

There's also some great artists who had worldwide success, but only had that 1 US hit.

I could draft every category from this list, but I'm not going to pigeonhole myself this time.

I followed that last draft, and he wasn't the one nitpicking about purity.
