Ran a 10k in June (1 Viewer)

Maybe I should go back to snow running. Third time in ten days I have bit it while either trail running or track sprinting. Great run today otherwise! Six miles in the north chagrin river valley woods. Muddy two hundred foot cliffs probably don't help litmit the falling, but I never claimed to be a very bright man.

Did 5 easy ones earlier...end of the run realized a decent blister was forming on the outside of my big toe. I have always seemed to get blisters there. Anyway, pretty painful. Planning to (in a sterile manner) pierce the blister, drain it, dry it, then bandage it. Before I do so, anyone disagree or have different advice? Not the best timing with Boston less than 48 hrs away

This is my biggest issue with the ultra's, I just don't have the time to put into the training. About the most I can get in on a weekday is 10 unless I do a double and aside from the occasional one off, I just don't believe I'm doing myself any good by doubling up on the same day.
Why not? Guys do doubles as a standard part of training all the time.

I have only dropped in here occasionally, but I was thinking this would be the best spot to get feedback.

I saw back in late February compression calf sleeves were being discussed, but I wonder if anybody has experience with patella straps?

I have been running for quite a few years and (knock on wood) have been almost injury free. I'm running 3-4 times/ week and my mileage is about 18-22 miles/week. Lately I am experiencing soreness below by kneecap on my right knee. It hurts to go up and down stairs and I limp a bit the day after I run. My massage therapist suggested I try a patella strap and also really work on lengthening my quads because they tend to get quite tight (even though I stretch after every run).

Does anybody have any thoughts to share on patella straps? TIA.
5 mile runs left me crippled due to knee pain 3-4 years ago. Strapped on the straps and I can tolerate the pain on 40-100 mile runs at 220 lbs. I highly recommend them for petella issues.
Thank you for your feedback. I've been doing a bit of online research, do you just use something like this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Medline-Patella-Strap-1ct/16608855It sounds like they have worked very well for you, do you know what brand you bought and the approximate cost? I have seen the Cho Pat brand advertised in the back pages of Runner's World, but I was hoping to buy something locally.
http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Tec-Athletics-Patellar-Tendon-Strap/dp/B004AOGA56

That is what I use.

10 miles today. Planned on doing more but was just gassed. Should have avoided Chipotle and Busch Light's last night.

Time for my post-run beer.

19:02 for my 5K this morning.

Down and back course on the boardwalk with some light rain, 50 degrees and starting into a 15 mph headwind (worked well for a tailwind). Wasn't expecting much but ended up with a PR and 3rd overall finish. First time I ever had a negative split on a 5K. Splits went like this:

6:11(187)

6:16(190)

6:05(194)

:30 (194)

3/326 overall 1/37 in the 30-39 age group. Oh and they actually gave me a $50 gift card to a shoe store! Sub 19 is coming soon. :banned:

Congrats on the PR and showing! Looks like I have my work cut out for me this spring!

Congrats Ghost on hitting your goal and Hang 10 on the PR!

I missed the registration for the half I was hoping to run this morning, which is a good thing because there was a rare desert downpour. Guess my "Wet Half" will have to wait until later this year.

Excellent! Great job!

Any special prep/dress/strategy if you do find yourself in a full/half marathon getting dumped on?
Liberal application of BodyGlide everywhere that might hypothetically chafe.

If it was going to be chilly anyway and you were on the fence over how much to wear, rain should probably make you err on the side of over-dressing rather than under-dressing.

No changes otherwise.

Essentially because by the time I get home from work I'm beat and don't want to think about running 3-4 miles regardless of how slow they are. My day starts at 3:30 usually, get a run in, to work by 8, home by 6-6:30, dinner, family stuff and I'm done.

Keep running, it will suck for a few hundred yards but your body will adjust. Might blow any PR opportunities but just keep running. Part of the reason I ran nasty, wet, muddy trails this morning in a rainstorm...practice like you play so there aren't surprises race day or at least you know better how to deal with them.

If not for Boston coming up I'd say leave it alone. But in this case you should treat it as you described - just be sure everything is really clean.

Some of you people are fast. I couldn't do 400 repeats at that pace. Hell, I don't think I could do 200 repeats at that pace. Not that I ever do track repeats, just sayin'.....

And the opposite of fast would be my 20 miler today in Forest Park in Portland. Muddy, rainy, with 2400' of climbing in a fairly low fuel state - 2 pieces of bacon and coffee with coconut milk before, 1 fruit/chia bar and 1 gel during, along with some Master Amino Pattern tablets and water. Didn't move along very quickly, but just kept moving along for over 4 hours.

The goal of runs like this is to build up my ability to be an efficient fat burner. I'll find out soon enough how well that's working as I scheduled a Metabolic Efficiency test for early May, so I'll see exactly where I'm at in terms of burning fat vs carbs at different intensities as measured by HR.

Sure, but your workouts would cripple most of us

Today was my last long run (15) before my HM two Saturdays from now. Today was also the first somewhat warm running day of the year (about 70 but dry -- very comfortable), and I noticed when I got home that I had a ton of salt deposits on my head and face, which was weird because I hadn't sweat very much at all. Not sure what to make of that other than getting lots of fluids.

I'm going to treat the rest of this week as a little mini-taper. Recovery run tomorrow and 8-10 easy on Tuesday. Probably a very short LT run (like 7/3 or something) on Thursday just to turn my legs over and have a little intensity somewhere in the week. Also probably 8 or so on the weekend with just short easy runs otherwise until race day.

Good luck to all of our Boston runners tomorrow.

Fair enough, as they've crippled me for a few days on occasion. I was a little sore this morning, and I usually take the day after a 4+ hour run completely off. But as I need to work towards being able to do long back-to-backs by mid-summer I decided I'd head out and at least get in a few recovery miles on the roads near my parents' house. A good 1/3 mile walking, a slow jog for a mile or two, and by then I started to actually feel pretty good! I ended up knocking out 5 miles total and then spent some extra time stretching and with a foam roller (yes, I even have one at my parent's house).

Now, it's time to watch what all you Boston runners throw down tomorrow! Have a great day out there fellas.

9 mile trail run this morning. Legs felt surpisingly loose this morning and I actually ran pretty fast coming off a PR 5K. Averaged 8:09...last 3 miles were in the 7:20's.

Reflecting back on the 5K, I once again come to the conclusion that the 5K is the pound for pound most brutal race there is. BUT there were some pretty cool moments for me from this past race.

First was the fact when you run a 5K it's just a different kind of race than the rest because they are generally smaller and it seems more so that you're racing your competition more than the clock. I get to the start line and I'm actually sizing up the other racers...see a few familiar faces. Me another guy I know, look around and we both ask, "whose going to win this thing?" He responds that it's going to be me...I hate hearing that but I wasn't sure he was wrong. I can't imagine a scenario in a longer race where this would be possible. In the end, the winner dropped into the 17's and coasted to victory. I finished a distance 3rd but still...3rd out of 300+ is better than I've ever done.

Second, after reading more about road racing, it was pretty cool to actually pull off a nice racing tactic. Around the 2 mile mark I see that I'm closing in on the 3rd place runner and I'm probably running about 6 minutes flat at this point. I know that I'm going to pass him eventually but I knew that when it was time to make my move, I didn't want him stick with me. I had to dig deep but when I got close enough, I shifted gears (not easy to do at that pace for me) and passed him like he was standing still and never flinched or looked back. Worked like a charm. Dude never changed his stride. That was great feeling.

At the end, I'm just trying to purge my mind of the word quit and finish well. I'm dying to just coast but I hear someone cheering for someone close behind me. I even start to hear footsteps around the 3 mile mark. Ah hell no...noway I'm going to run this hard to get out kicked at the end and denied my first overall top 3. I also realize that no one is catching me that's behind at this point unless I slow down. I kicked like a ******* the end. I looked at the gps data later and I actually ran a 5:59 pace the last 1.1 miles. How I didn't end up puking, I'll never know. Turned out the guy behind me was a friend of a friend and we chatted on facebook this morning. He mentioned that he couldn't believe how it looked like I was hardly working and he was struggling so bad to try to keep up. If he only knew, I thought. Was good feeling hearing that. At least I looked strong.

One last stray observation...3 seconds away from 18:59!? I was trying to think could I have done anything any different if I knew I was so close. I know I couldn't have run any faster on the second half, so maybe I could have shaved some time at the beginning...but that's easy to think in retrospect. I gave it my all yesterday considering the wind and not treating this as an important race. There's always the next race. This gonna make me work that much harder because I know how close I am.

Anyways, enough rambling. Happy Easter, Fellas. :D

Same - except 26.2 and I ran 20k this afternoon heading into the two week taper.

Awesome job Hang10. You speed guys are a treat to watch. It's cool to hear you working so hard internally but making it look so effortless to those on the sidelines. I ran a race with a local guy that broke a 5 minute mile a few times. Watching him run always reminded me of watching a deer run. Just long, effortless gluiding more than running. Very natural stride, fun to watch, not something I've been blessed with.

Great stuff, Hang10!

Go Boston runners! Time to get 'er done!!!

Any special prep/dress/strategy if you do find yourself in a full/half marathon getting dumped on?
Nipguards. Lack of those will be a big, big regret.

No argument there!

---

Was on travel for the Easter holiday, but managed a 40 mile ride and 8 mile run. Neither were very good, as I felt like isht, but they're done and it is something before next weekend. On to the week. This week managed 30 miles run, 57 miles on the bike, and 1.5k in the water. Not shabby, and would have had lots more biking if the kid didn't have games to go to (those were good too, though).

---

Go Boston guys! Can we get a recap of numbers? I seem to have missed those.

oh, thanks for reminding me, what kind of tape do you use to secure your penis to your leg during a HM/FM? I'm kind of concerned about this.
