Eyes of the Guru: Preseason Reports (1 Viewer)

Good stuff.

One thing that is coming to light with Browns LB/DE Jabaal Sheard is the role that Pettine has pegged for him. He plans to utilize him in the same Joker role that Mario Williams was in last year.

Last week Pettine gave this answer when asked about which defensive player that Pettine would have the greatest impact after the 2015 season is in the books and he said Sheard.

A surprise answer:

I posed this fill-in-the-blank statement to Pettine: “When all is said and done, the defensive player who will have the biggest impact on the 2014 season will be … " His answer: “Jabaal Sheard. Got big plans for him. He caught my eye watching the tape from year ago and I think we’re going to do a good job of putting him in some positions where he can be successful and take advantage of his skill set.” This sentiment would seem to cement 2013 No. 1 pick Barkevious Mingo as a situational role player heading into his second training camp.
Then yesterday Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot said that he heard from Sheard that Pettine was going to have him in the same role that Mario Williams was used in with Buffalo where he would not be dropping back in coverage but would be coming up and rushing the passer as a DE.

Recap of Day 1 of Cleveland Browns minicamp with Mary Kay Cabot and Glenn MooreCleveland Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot and cleveland.com’s Glenn Moore take a look back at the the first day of the Mandatory minicamp in Berea, including the competition between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel.
The cherry-on-top is that yesterday the Browns began contract extension talks with Sheard to wrap him up for the long-term so this seems like a move they plan to stick with for the duration of Pettine's regime.

#Browns OLB Jabaal Sheard said there were some contract extension talks regarding him. Said hoping it works out, loves team, loves city.

This move should help get Jabaal on the field more and I'm sure he'll rack-up more sacks as well.

Tackles = 1.5

Assists = .75

Sacks = 4

oooooooooooooooooooooooof
Ahh yeah I was kinda scratching my head over some of those numbers myself but the thing that stood about the FBG IDP scoring system is no points, zero, nadda, nothing, for EDIT (missed the recovered fumble pts) recovered fumbles or for safeties.

For reference, when I mention where players finished in the rankings last season, my model will be the standard Footballguys scoring system. This is the standard stuff;

Tackles = 1.5

Assists = .75

Sacks = 4

Forced fumbles = 3

Fumble recoveries = 3

Interceptions = 4

passes defended = 1.5

Touchdowns = 6
Add... From the above post where I mentioned Jabaal Sheard, the first story about his potential 'break-out' season.

Nice write-up and I don't think this is the last you'll hear from Sheard.

Go to the link for the full read and their is a good video interview with Jabaal with all of the beat writers where he answers all questions. Good stuff for those interested.

great info but leaves me with some questions especially for deeper leagues and ones that start more than 2 guys at each position and have more than 10 teams.

Maybe I'll add them up once all are posted but I see many CBs who have "no value". Will there even be 24 who are considered roster-able once this is done or considered more than just "depth"? The assessment of the Hou CBs is a great example. These guys are practically every week starters in some of my leagues but only have minimal value? Same goes for DTs.

And if Norton skips over a guy (like Fokou for example) is it an oversight or assumption that the player will not make the team?

awesome

re: the patriots

I think the current belief is duron harmon will start at ss --- I wouldn't trust chung until I see him officially listed there after cutdowns, if he's still on the team.

also, the juicy corner spot opposite revis would probably be 2nd year guy logan ryan, or possibly dennard.

I think they prefer to keep arrington in the slot.

I know the bit about trying to get rid of arrington was a little tongue in cheek, but they just signed him to a 4 yr deal last year ---- they basically try to keep him in the slot, but have been continually forced to use him on outside receivers due to injuries, etc.

I think they probably have enough depth now to keep him in the hole.

and I think jamie collins is actually very good in coverage, so it'll be interesting to see what they do there with the 3 of them plus anderson.

I wonder if anderson is just a fletcher replacement

Skipping guys like Fokou are more a case that I feel they are unlikely to have enough impact to be worth mention than a

judgment on if they will make the team or not. I could list every player on the depth chart but there is not much purpose in that. Instead I try to include the players who are likely to be starters or the top backups. Yes I know Fokou is supposedly in the mix and I probably should have mention him, but if he wins the job it will still be a fantasy void IMO.

In the scoring that I use for a base, Jonathan Joseph was CB#40 last year and Jackson was #62. The Ryan Logan thing was an over site. I didn't see that info until after the AFC East was posted.

Thanks for the feed back. You guys are the greatest. I am certainly not perfect and I do miss some things once in a while. You all do a great job of helping me find those errors and your different viewpoints often make me got back and take a closer look at certain situations. When I get a chance I will take another look at Fokou for example.

Best of luck to you all

Thanks for the response John.

Following up on my CB example- 16 team league with flex defense and everyone starting at least 2 CBs, once bye weeks get factored in CB 40 becomes valuable.

I guess it would help to know as well how big each tier is. Does DL1 consist of 10 or 12 guys or less?

I do pretty much everything based on the most common 12 team league set up. Sometimes I mention "deep drafted" or "14-16 team leagues". There are a multitude of different scoring/roster/lineup set ups out there. I try to use the one that is as close as I can get to the most common and is something I am really familiar with. I try to let everyone know what that base is so they can compare and contrast with their own set up.

Those who were questioning the scoring that we use; what I put out there is not the "entire" scoring that I use. There are points for safeties etc. I just listed the categories and points that are the main considerations for determining player value. There is no need to consider safeties in player evaluation because there is no possible way to predict which 10 or so players will record one in any give year. Simply put, I try to keep it simple so that everyone can easily compare it to their own. Hope I have accomplished that.
