Otis diet fad of the month thread - Potato mania!!1 (1 Viewer)

I'm right at my interim goal that I set for Spring Break which starts tomorrow. Hoping I can gain no more than 4-5lbs while on vacation and then get right back on the wagon when I get back in a week.

Just over half way to my ultimate goal...
Congrats, we're approaching that time of year where the resolve often starts to wane a bit. Stay strong fellas.
This is true for me. And this is about when I fell off last year. I've got some craziness in the house right now with two sick kids (one a newborn) and struggling to stay on a schedule and it is taking its toll. I haven't been logging my food well in recent days, but I'm committed to fixing that. I just need to work through these illnesses, hopefully this weekend I can get some normalcy. We will see. But I am not going to let the wheels come off here, a brief and temporary pause is fine but I refuse to move backwards. Gonna do what I can today to get it right.GL all.
Just curious. How does a sick kid make you eat poorly?

I know you think I always point out the cranky, negative side....but it just seems that it's always something. Your in-laws are over. Your wife's birthday. A brunch. A business trip. You were tired. Now the kids are sick.

I just think that, at the end of the day, you need to decide what you're going to eat and why. Just my 0.02.
I suspect it's because, for some folks, eating well takes focus and discipline. And when things are in relative chaos around you, it is harder to maintain the will power necessary to stay the course. It's why routine can be so important to people who are trying to get in shape.

This pretty much nails it. For me it's easy when I can get into a routine and have good habits. It's a lot harder outside of that.

It's funny that the nail biting habit follows the same course. When there is chaos at home and I'm missing work and stressed, it's a while lot harder to be disciplined about filing the nails and putting on that goofy polish, and the next thing I know I look down and realize I've been biting my nails for the past ten minutes.

Hoping for some sanity here soon. We will see.

The guys in here who have six packs but are dieting are infuriating. :hot:
:goodposting: I have a couple of 2-liters, not six-packs.
I like to think that those of us who are pretty close to looking the way we want only would like to encourage others (as I for one was once a 250lb fat-###) that you can attain whatever your goals are given enough time and dedication. Also the knowledge that the closer you get to your goal, in many ways it gets more difficult because the fat gets way more stubborn. This can be very frustrating and de-motivating so you need to stay strong..

I bet the added stress doesn't help. I know that when I'm feeling out of sorts or stressed I'll often want to eat way more than I normally do. Don't know why but it's true for me.

Well good on you guys I say. :hifive:
I finally knew I had this when I understood my health and fitness issues were similar to any addict's. Remember, I'm the guy who posts about how much I yoyo-ed. Like a 10 year sober alcoholic is still an alcoholic, even with abs poking through, I am still a fat### and always will be.

I don't have an answer for this one. My life is gloriously stress free lately, but no doubt even short term periods of chaotic schedule, urgent personal problems, family issues... whatever... seemed to direct my vehicle straight to the drive thru.

Alone in a car with the tunes turned up, a couple In and Out burgers, some fries and a shake is a great stress reliever.

We had both kids in to see the doctor yesterday, and hit McDonald's drive thru on the way home. It's just been a little overwhelming, and that was an easy solution that made everyone happy at the time. Yes I could have passed for it myself and instead drive separately to a deli after I got home and picked up a salad or something. It just wasn't happening. If it were a regular work day never in a million years do I go to McDonald's, I'd be at my office having either a salad or a protein shake for lunch.

I crushed half of a 10" bundt pan of Monkey Bread for lunch yesterday...was that wrong?
The last time I was stressed, my kid lost athletic eligibility because she was blowing off school. After going several rounds with her, catching her in numerous lies, conferencing with teachers, finding a tutor, organizing all the missing work to get her back in action... all in one frustration filled day... I ate half an apple pie.

Interesting. In my case it was just there and so was I, our eyes locked and we knew that one of us was not leaving that room alive.

I think I've mentioned this before, maybe it was another forum. If you want to stop biting your nails for good, get Invisalign. With it in, you simply can't bite your nails. You can't get an angle on them.

Not only will you stop biting your nails, you will stop snacking all day too. You will also develop the habit of brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing each day.

Oh...and your teeth get straightened out in the process as well!

Why Overeating Doesn't Make You Fat

This is a situation where someone has come to the right conclusion for the wrong reasons.
I assume you mean his conclusion "to cook real food from real ingredients," and not the one stated in the headline.
Yes. I think the headline was typical huffpo sensationalism.

clicks = $On board with the general premise though. Shop the outer rim of the store and cook more. You will feel better and have more energy, it translates to much better workouts.

Yeah, no idea how to quantify what I ate today...
This times infinity. It's been a long week and weekend. I feel like hell.

Luckily, the 2 month old seemingly is in the clear and doing well. Toddler is also no longer sick. My wife is no longer losing her mind, and we actually slept some last night. I get to go back to work tomorrow and back to my routine.

Back at it...

Good to hear things are turning around.

Let's do this fellas. This seems to be the time of year for me when the wheels go off the tracks. Time to redouble efforts and git er done.

Been running every Monday and Friday. Have a dinner tonight, so I woke up an hour earlier than usual to go for a 4.8 mile run. It was miserable in every way, but (1) I did it, and (2) I didn't quit in the middle.

Still doubt that this is sustainable, but checking in here seems to help. For me, getting up early to go running is pretty extreme behavior, but I've somehow convinced myself that I need to stick to the plan.

Nice GB, keep it up. That short commute to work makes that possible. Let's see you do it once you have a couple brats and move to the suburbs

As the thread falls to page 5.

I'm zero carb day two days plus so far today seeing how long it takes me to go ketogenic. Tasting it a little this morning, but no test strips and probably not there yet.

Grilled bistecca alla fiorentina and corn on the cob with jalepeno butter last night. Diet food. Snacked more than usual too (still under my limit if I count the "exercise" of walking, but I generally don't). So of course, this morning was my biggest loss of the week.

Come on guys, don't quit now.
Amen to this.

Back to work this week, haven't been vigilant about entering into MFP, but have been moderating what I eat. I need to get back into the MFP habit, will do that today. Have a long working weekend out of town, and then will have a couple months of normalcy, at home, with the new baby healthy and settling in, us actually getting some sleep, and my wife not losing her mind. So I'm going to be good as possible this weekend, and then starting Monday rock n' roll into the summer. I'm not looking to hit crazy goals, but if I can stay stalled the next week and then drop 10 more in the following 4-6 weeks, I'll be golden.

I'm doing Jim Wendler's 5/3/1 routine and I've seen some nice progress over the span of two months.

starting 1RM

squat - 215

bench - 165

deadlift - 200

ohp - 85

current 1RM

squat - 280

bench - 195

deadlift - 230

ohp - 105
You must have naturally strong legs because typically someone's deadlift is more than their squat. Have you ever lifted before?
I'd call myself a novice lifter. Dabbled with the starting strength program then dropped it. I've stuck to this program since February, and really enjoy it.

Maybe my deadlift form is not very good. I'll look into that.
So yeah, I did some research and watched a ton of videos. My deadlift form was pretty bad. I was doing three things wrong:

1- crouching too low to start (my thighs were near parallel with the ground)

2- not keeping my head up at all times

3- focused more on pushing up with my legs than pulling the weight with my back

I did my best to fix these mistakes and my 1RM jumped up from 230 to 245 in one session.

thanks for pointing that out, Daulton.

Good for you for doing some research. You can actually hurt yourself pretty good doing deads with bad form. For me, I focus on keeping my a** down and my back angle straight (the standard athletic stance for golf, etc). I also push through my heels to ensure that I maintain that position. Lastly, keep the bar as close to your shins as you can, many people even scrape their shins with the bar.

Good luck!

I haven't quit or anything. In fact, I've started running a bit. But that had the (predictable) effect of giving me a big drop due to dehydration and then immediately jumping my weight back up because my muscles started hanging on to every bit of water (at least that's what I suspect). And (also predictably) it made me hungrier. I was having no problems staying below 1500 calories/day when I was just walking. Some days, I was below 1200 calories. This week, I could easily hit 1800. Which is still fine to lose, but I'm leery of my appetite creeping back up.

My son was born last week and I have my mother in law staying with us. We all know how that goes.
That was me a couple months ago. Made any kind of routine hellishly impossible.
My daughter was born six weeks ago and my MIL stayed with us. She is a great cook, so I had that to contend with. We also have a lot of friendly neighbors who brought food by for us. It was very nice, but none of it was particularly healthy.

But I guess if these are the biggest problems I deal with ... I should probably shut my trap.
