Fury

8.5/10

Excellent flick. Pitt did an outstanding job, as did the entire cast.

Made me think a lot about what my cousin who went MIA over near the German border must have gone through around the same time in the war.
What does this movie do that other WWII movies haven't done?
about what?
It seems like Saving Private Ryan but with less story.
Nothing at all like SPR to me. I'll admit, the plot could probably have been tighter. Maybe I got too caught up in the imagery it presented, and the "win at all costs" mentality of the German military at the time period it was attempting to depict, which I thought it did a good job of doing.Perhaps I was a bit overzealous in my first rating. For the battle sequences and imagery alone, I'd give it a solid 7.5. Definitely worth checking out IMO.

To begin, I don't care that this movie isn't a rental. No one does.

You people need to see this movie. Could be the best tank battles ever filmed. It's heavy-handed, yes. But the action scenes and Brad Pitt are top notch.

Excellent flick. The cinematography in this film was amazing. Not perfect but incredibly authentic. Pitt did an outstanding job, as did the entire cast. At one point, it did sort of meander a bit for me, but overall a solid war flick.

Just came in to post about this. Man that was some great battle cinematography.

saw with my GF...we both liked it a lot...not a feel good story at all lol. Doesnt hold a candle to SPR but stands on its own as a tank war movie

That's what I was getting at in my original post regarding my cousin. I've done a ton of research on him and where he was during the waning days of the war and it was downright barbaric at times. Thought the film did a good job with the realism of the times.

Thinking about seeing The Two Faces of January in the theater for a rare movie date night. Start times and length of movie are perfect- plus it looks interesting (leitmotif from reviews- "gorgeous") and the wife loves Viggo.

unless somebody explains why it sucks.
I won't say it sucks, but I was not impressed. It was 'gorgeous' and I liked the period aspect of it, but didn't find the story very interesting. There also wasn't a likeable character in the whole movie so I didn't care what happened to any of them.

If you haven't seen Gone Girl, see that instead.
I want to- but length and start times makes it tougher to combine with dinner (and not bankrupt me with sitter and/or have wife fall asleep mid-movie).
Go with Whiplash then (106 minutes).
Watched January last night.

Hitchcock wannabe- beautiful locations, well acted (I was impressed with the younger guy who I didn't recognize, and of course Viggo, and Dunst's inflatable boobs) nice period vibe, very Hitchcock score tied to the action... but it just missed bit. I never felt the tensions that the movie seemed to intend, and I never really cared too much about the characters or what happened to them. Not bad- but not the biannual movie theater movie I was hoping for.

RUSH

The James Hunt - Nikki Lauda story.

I've been wanting to see this movie since it was in the theater and never had the chance.

I've never watched a car race of any kind in my life, and have no interest, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

I liked the dual narration, the representation of the period in the movie, the pace of the movie. A lot of movies like this you can predict a very long drawn out segment on the recovery of an injured character, and this movie didn't do that.

Yup....really like this and would recommend if you haven't seen it.

Sweet. I noticed this is now available on HBO GO.

i like how they made you hate and respect both guys

Is Snowpiercer actually good? The trailer looks horribly cheesy and clichéd.
Meh, not really
Obvious and dumb... but not terrible. Worth a watch with tempered expectations.
It was anything but obvious and dumb. That's a simple-minded way to look at it.
ok, smarty-pants.

you won me over with your insult. it was brilliant film-making.

Sorry, but I've watched it twice and don't understand how anyone could call it obvious and dumb. Not calling you simple-minded, I just think there's a lot more going on that you think.

Out of 36 critics on Metacritic, 29 of them gave it at least an 80.

I watched it- and even after watching some critique of it posted here, still came away with my sentiment.

maybe "dumb" is unfair- the creators were trying to do #### with the craft beyond telling the story, which I appreciate. "silly", more than "dumb".

I did. Loved it. It`s a slow boil but worth the wait, once it gets going it doesnt stop. They set it up to be a series i believe.
It was a series in the 80s with an old white guy who drove a Jaguar.
Yep. I used to watch it. Mrs. Dogg and I were obsessed with his name: Edward Woodward. That like naming your kid Bobby Bobson.

I really liked this as well. I'm not into racing or race movies myself but gave this a shot and I recommend it. I even looked both guys up to see more of their careers and rivalry. Good stuff.

Why are they on a moving train, complete with all the potential issues that causes, instead of just being hunkered down in one spot?

they would have had to call the movie something other than "snow piercer". maybe "snow hole"?

Caught the end of **** last night. It was as mildly amusing as I remembered it (Dan Hedaya as Nixon was :moneybag: though), but I'd forgotten how hot Michelle Williams and Kristen Dunst were in that - and I'm not generally a fan of either one.

Saw the Usual Suspects again a few days ago after not seeing it for a few years. Has to be a top 10 all time movie right? I had forgotten how good it was. I can't think of anything that's come out since that's better - maybe as good as, but not better.

Thought this was excellent.

Saw Enough Said (my netflix queue is getting low).

For all the praise it got, this really sucked. Dull, whiny characters, complaining about every minor detail. Actually turned it off halfway through (which I almost never do).

Wolverine

Decent actioner. Loved the Viper actress!

Fury:

No surprise, but I will be the lone "meh" review so far on this one. I was very 50/50 watching this. Thought it looked good, had a couple good performances, and being a fighting tank movie was just original enough to stand out a bit from other war movies. That battled with feeling hit over the head with themes of brotherhood of war and war is ####, and some things I found just silly, like the new guys' story arc and the ending. Enough here to justify seeing it in the theater, but just barely. 5/10.

That is a bold statement.

Haven't seen it, but I expect to have the same reaction. I'll wait until it hits the $3 theater.

Rewatched the Blair Witch... First saw it in the theater and loved it. Acknowledge that reviews were love it/hate it.

On rewatch I fall into the hate it camp. Nothing happens for an hour and ten minutes except for inarticulate people arguing with each other and acting freaked out about rock piles. The final ten minutes are not nearly enough payoff.

A critic pointed out that many WW2 films are heroic exaggerations of a war that was every bit as brutal as Vietnam. So I liked that Fury was willing to be more accurate about that brutality.

Fury is absolutely a flawed movie. I can't argue with that. But the tank battles alone are a singular achievement that I've never seen in another film.

John Wick - Excellent movie also surprisingly funny in parts, but it is extremely violent. Perfect part for Keanu as the emotions he has to show are within his range.

When the Russian Boss said "Oh" the whole theater :lmao: . When you see it you will get it

Also the most absurd kill is when John Wick hits a thug with his car and as his body is flipping over the car. he shoots him three times through the roof.

Well worth watching

Fury.

I was not looking forward to this one. Seemed a bit glam for a WWII movie. But then all the good reviews. Here and elsewhere. It was better then I expected but not as good as the post-release hype.

I'd say 6.5/10.

Just felt the cast was not a realistic group. It was almost operatic. Everyone was too grandiose and self-aware. Everyone had a clever line to deliver. Like an A. Sorkin script which I enjoy but in a different setting.

Brad Pitt being 50 is pretty wild.

It's a good attempt and worth watching.

The Last Man On Earth (1964)

I realize it's 1964 but I had never seen it until I got the Blu Ray and was extremely disappointed. Absolutely terrible movie IMO.

Fury was ok but forgettable. It felt like the story about the young tank driver was going to go somewhere better than it did.

The One I Love

Sure there's some major plot points left unexplained, and it takes a while for the movie to really get going, but damn if it didn't turn out to be a real fun ride. Highly recommended. Prob best not to watch the trailer or read up on anything.

2014's turning out to be a really good year for movies from what I've seen anyway.

Birthday today so wifey and I going out for dinner and a movie without the kids.

Equalizer, John Wick, or Gone Girl. These are the choices but struggling to decide which one to go with. All have great reviews on Rotten Tomatoes user reviews (not critic) since our taste usually aligns with the users. Wife loves action movies so not like I have to compromise on genre or anything.

If looking for just a purely entertaining flick, which do you guys recommend for theater viewing? We will likely watch the other two on netflix when they come out.
