Michael Vick enters free agency as a fascinating NFL case study

By Judy Battista

NFL Media reporter

Michael Vick spent part of Super Bowl week making the media rounds, essentially becoming a pitchman for a product that might've increased in value through relative dormancy.

Vick, who turns 34 in June, remains one of the NFL's most compelling figures, a precursor to the dual-threat quarterbacks who now captivate talent evaluators, and a litmus test for the league's -- and its fans' -- capacity to tolerate and forgive transgressions. And very soon, he will be something else: a free agent, likely the most interesting one of the offseason.

Vick wants to be a starter, and because of how he handled his final season in Philadelphia -- when he was playing out his contract, when he lost his starting job -- his time on the bench probably won't hurt him in that pursuit. One NFL personnel executive said teams undoubtedly will rate Vick the best of a middling quarterback free-agent market -- one likely to include Matt Schaub, Matt Cassel and Mark Sanchez -- and the exec said he would rate him as a mid-tier starting quarterback, somewhere between 13 and 16. In a league with 32 teams, that's better than half.

"There are too many teams that are in need of an upgrade for him not to be looked at as a starter," the personnel executive said. "I could see a team signing him, and developing a young guy. Vick could be a very good bridge starter for two to three years."

And that, despite his advancing age, is a remarkable improvement from where Vick was the last time he hit free agency.

When Vick re-entered the league four and a half years ago, after serving 18 months in prison for his role in a dogfighting operation, he was a pariah who also became part of a social experiment: Could a professional sports team weave rehabilitation together with winning? The results were mixed, with the success of Jeffrey Lurie and Andy Reid's grand bargain framed by the prism through which it was viewed. They won ... some of the time.

There were glimpses of the greatness that first seduced the Atlanta Falcons and eventually led to a gigantic contract extension from the Eagles. But big picture? His twin football liabilities -- injuries and turnovers -- continued to bedevil Vick and, in turn, the Eagles. They did not win on a grand scale, and ultimately Vick's weaknesses led to the team's downward spiral under Reid, ushering in Chip Kelly, who eventually chose Nick Foles over Vick.

But that really was not the biggest picture for Vick, of course. President Barack Obama did not call the Eagles to congratulate them for merely signing a signal-caller; he called because Vick had become a symbol of a person in desperate need of a second chance. In that respect, it worked: Vick was a joy to have around, Lurie has remarked, and the quarterback repaid the Eagles this season for the risk they took with him. And this is why his résumé will be enhanced among those willing to take a chance on him this spring.

It happened long before Vick and Foles stood shoulder to shoulder at a joint October press conference -- unheard of in a scenario where the two participants are competing for one job. That piece of theater merely underscored what people around the Eagles had been saying for a while: Vick had become an important locker room presence, a mature, steady mentor whose support of and friendship with Foles was unfailing, even as it became obvious that Foles was taking Vick's job for good.

But it was back in training camp when Vick made perhaps the biggest impact on the season by publicly and privately forgiving Riley Cooper after his widely covered usage of a racial slur. At the time the video of Cooper surfaced, it seemed unlikely that he could remain with the team without splitting open the locker room. But Vick, in linking Cooper's need for support and forgiveness with his own, threw a figurative arm around Cooper, sending a signal to teammates that it was acceptable to allow Cooper to work his way back. It echoed what Donovan McNabb did, when he lobbied the Eagles to sign Vick after he was released from prison and, like Vick, Cooper took the opportunity to redeem himself. He became the No. 2 receiver on the league's fourth-highest scoring offense.

Now it is time for Vick to move on, putting an end to a surreal stint in Philadelphia. If this remains something short of a feel-good story for people who still cannot square the smiling, polite player they see now with the heinous actions of his past, then it is a simple one about Vick rebuilding his career and professional reputation when offered a lifeline. It seems likely that wherever he goes, Vick will be asked to at least compete for the starting job, rather than be handed it. But the expectation of two league executives is that Vick -- who still possesses the strong arm and much of the speed that dazzled the league long before his reputation was sullied by the gruesome details of dogfighting -- will emerge as a starter next season, especially because there are three, maybe four, quarterbacks who are currently considered sure first-rounders in the 2014 NFL Draft.

"From a supply and demand side, there just aren't enough to go around," the personnel executive said.

There weren't back in 2009, either, when a minor injury to then-backup Kevin Kolb led the Eagles to their stunning signing of Vick, after they had earlier said they were not interested. On the summer day when Vick was reintroduced to the NFL, Lurie spoke in harsh, blunt language to express his disgust at the crimes Vick had committed, and about the disgrace he had brought upon the NFL. A small clutch of protestors stood outside the gates of the Eagles' facility and local sports radio was awash in often-heated reactions from fans. Reid, though, said then he was moved by the second chances offered to his own troubled sons.

"There is no room for error," Lurie said that day. "There is no third chance. If it isn't fulfilled the way we expect it to be, that will be the end."

The end has come in Philadelphia. But there was no error. Not in the motivation of the Eagles or in the completion by Vick. And Vick will get his third chance, after all.

Rotoworld take on the article above:

An NFL personnel executive confirmed to NFL.com that Michael Vick is "undoubtedly" the best quarterback on the free-agent market and will land a starting job this offseason.

"There are too many teams in need of an upgrade for him not to be looked at as a starter," the NFL executive said. "Vick could be a very good bridge starter for two to three years." Vick has reportedly drawn interest from the Jets and Bucs this offseason, while the Vikings, Texans, Raiders, and Jaguars are all in the market for a starting quarterback. He isn't more than a mid-tier starter at this point, but showed he was capable of leading a team when on the field for the Eagles in 2013. Despite entering his age 34 season, Vick is expected to command a multi-year deal this offseason.

More from Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday Countdown that the Jets and Bucs are both "expected to have some level of interest" in free agent Michael Vick.

Vick's old offensive coordinator in Philly, Marty Mornhinweg, is entering his second year as the Jets' OC. The Bucs recently hired Lovie Smith as head coach and could pursue competition for holdover sophomore Mike Glennon. Both clubs have salary cap room to spend and young quarterbacks on their current rosters who've yet to establish themselves in the league. Vick turns 34 in June.

The Philadelphia Daily News reports impending free agent Michael Vick "very badly" wants to start in 2014.

Reporter Les Bowen expects Vick to move on from the Eagles. Vick will undoubtedly draw interest as a "bridge" starter from quarterback-needy teams, but won't have much room for error wherever he ends up. It's possible he won't find the market he's looking for, and returns to Philadelphia as Nick Foles' backup. Vick turns 34 in June.

CSN Philly suggests the Raiders as a possible landing spot for impending free agent Michael Vick.

Beat writer Reuben Frank was just spitballing on Twitter, not reporting. But we know that Vick's preference is to start, and the Raiders fit as a team willing to take risks and needing a bridge quarterback. Vick turns 34 in June, but still showed he was plenty capable of leading a team when on the field for the Eagles in 2013. He went 77-of-141 for 1,215 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven appearances, compiling a respectable 86.4 passer rating. Vick also added 36 rushes for 306 yards and two more scores.

Asked Monday about free agent Michael Vick, Eagles coach Chip Kelly replied "I love Michael Vick. That guy is awesome."

It's further indication the Eagles would "love" to have Vick return as Nick Foles' backup in 2014, but that decision will be left up to a quarterback turning 34 in June whose NFL stock is enhanced by a bone-bare free agent market at his position. These are the top five signal callers whose contracts are up: 1. Vick 2. Josh McCown 3. Josh Freeman 4. Shaun Hill 5. Chad Henne.

Impending free agent Michael Vick said he's willing to be Nick Foles' 2014 backup if "all else fails."

Vick's market come March will be fascinating. He'll turn 34 in June and has become wildly injury prone, but he was playing at a reasonably high level as the Eagles starter to open the year and has an 87.9 passer rating since 2009 -- higher than Joe Flacco, Eli Manning, Cam Newton or Andrew Luck. It's possible he'll get some nibbles as a "bridge" starter. If not, Vick will be a quality backup that the Eagles could show interest in at the right price.

According to NFL Network, impending free agent Michael Vick is willing to return to Philadelphia as a backup in 2014.

Entering free agency at age 34 (in June), Vick isn't going to eliminate any options as he seeks a job. Per Ian Rapoport, Vick "loves Philly" and is "close" with starter Nick Foles. Vick will also get some nibbles from desperate teams in search of a stop-gap starter. In the end, we'd expect Vick to land with the highest bidder as his financial issues have been well documented.

Michael Vick has missed 16 full games over the last four seasons and left six other games early due to injury.

With Nick Foles officially being named the starter for the rest of the season, the storyline now turns to Vick's impending free agency. He'll hit the market as a 33-year-old that played reasonably well this year (in an ideal offense for him), but anyone signing him will be assuming a ton of injury risk. Given the state of the quarterback position in the league, we'd tentatively expect Vick to get a chance to compete for a job at someone's camp in 2014.

The guy can still play and win a team 9-10 games. Hes not going to win it all without an amazing supporting cast and a decent backup but yea I think he'll get a starting job some where.

I will say that he changed my view of him. He is humble now and his actions have shown that the last few years. It is a good redemption story.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up. I wasn't thinking his value was as high as that article makes it out to be. If he didn't always get hurt i think his value would be higher.

Just tried to trade for him, bad timing for hype. Is he worth more than a 4th rookie considering injury, 34, and plenty of QBs?

Michael Vick could wait until after NFL draft to signBy Dan Hanzus

Around the League Writer

Michael Vick remains on the open market. He might stay there for awhile.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is in "no rush" to sign with a team and could wait until after the draft before committing anywhere.

The reason? Vick doesn't want to be a backup, and waiting until after the draft (May 8-10) will give the veteran a clearer picture of which teams are still in the market for a starter.

Josh McCown agreed to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday, a move that now makes Vick the clear-cut No. 1 quarterback option on the open market (if he wasn't viewed that way already). The New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders are all possible landing spots at this time, though the Jets still make the most sense.

Rapoport reports there is mutual interest on both sides and Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg -- Vick's former coordinator with the Eagles -- would welcome the QB with open arms. The Jets believe Vick is the perfect fit for a franchise looking for someone to challenge and mentor Geno Smith after an uneven rookie year.

Vick to the Jets makes sense. Whether they're willing to wait for the quarterback is another matter.

Vick to the Jets doesn't make the most sense. Vick wants to start and Jets won't name him the starter. If Vick to the Jets makes the most sense, why would Vick want to wait until the after the draft. That doesn't make sense. Maybe he does end up on the Jets but i could name at least 5 teams that make more sense.

Agreed.

One more thought: Jets want a steady backup to Geno that has zero chance of having his name on some idiot's homemade sign in week 3. Vick would have people screaming for him in the preseason.

Wait till after the draft, and go to the team that didn't get one of the big 3 QBs.

Either he starts somewhere or has a clear path to start if he plays well in camp. Otherwise, he'll probably come back to Philly. If you're going to be a backup, why not stay where you know the playbook, the people and where your family already is.

Where? They said they don't expect him to come back. Big difference.

Rotoworld:

According to the New York Post, free agent Michael Vick remains the Jets' top choice at quarterback.
With Josh McCown off the market, Vick is clearly the Jets' top choice. But they want someone to come in as Geno Smith's backup and only take over if he falters. Vick, on the other hand, wants a legitimate chance to start. He's going to take his time -- possibly until after May's draft -- to see how the quarterback landscape shakes out. The Raiders remain an option.

The Raiders make way too much sense for Vick to go there.

Rotoworld:

According to ProFootballTalk, there are "indications" free agent Michael Vick could be moving toward a decision.
It was originally suspected that Vick would wait until after the draft so he could assess the quarterback landscape and choose a destination that would fulfill his desire to be a starter. But after watching Matt Cassel, Chad Henne and Josh McCown get deals, options are drying up. PFT suggests the Raiders, Texans, Browns, Jets, Bills and Titans as possible suitors.

A source tells NJ.com that free agent QB Michael Vick will visit the Jets this weekend.
This will be Vick's first official visit of free agency. Reports out of New York have consistently maintained that he is the Jets' top choice at quarterback, as they want him to provide both mentoring and competition for Geno Smith. Vick had arguably the best year of his career with the Eagles in 2010 under offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who now holds the same position with the Jets. Even at age 34, Vick would be a heavy favorite to beat out Smith in an open camp battle.

I believe they said they're not bringing him back.

I'm calling my shot now: Vick will be a bust in NY. And he won't last the season. He plays 10 games max, but I'm betting more like 8.

The guy can still play and win a team 9-10 games.
nah. Good backup, can play at a high level for a couple of games but after he gets hit a bit hisplay asuffers.

2004 he won 11 games, other than that he's had two 8 win seasons and one 9 win season. Vick's athletic ability used to be interesting to watch, but he never took the time to improve his accuracy. The Jets would be lucky to sniff .500 with him starting as QB.

Rotoworld:

Speaking in a Thursday radio interview, coach Rex Ryan said Michael Vick "definitely" has a chance to win the Jets' starting job.
However, Ryan added that Geno Smith is "going to be hard to beat out." That's mostly just coachspeak — the Jets wouldn't have signed Vick were dying to keep Smith under center — but Ryan and the team's brain trust have made it clear Smith is the No. 1 until Vick proves otherwise. Smith can keep his job with a strong camp and preseason. Vick proved to be a willing mentor for Nick Foles in Philadelphia, so Gang Green won't be afraid to keep him on the bench.

Just a heads up for people who can make waiver claims anytime.... you have to think today was the last straw with Geno. He was beyond pathetic, and Vick was much more effective in relief, including 69 yards on the ground. I'd be shocked if he's not named the starter next week.

The only potential problem: word on NY radio has it that Rex wanted to start Vick earlier than this, and Idzik overruled him. If he tries to pull that power-play again, Rex should turn in his whistle.

This offense should be better. I could find teams with worse weapons than Vick, Ivory, Decker, Harvin, Kerley and up-and-coming Amaro.

Maybe it's a Mornhinweg problem.

This FO needs to put Simms in and see if he is NFL material. They are going nowhere with Vick and Geno Stinks is not an NFL QB.

This guy says it a lot better than I did.

How naïve to think Harvin could help fix this mess. Sunday’s 43-23 home loss to Buffalo had to be rock bottom, right? And bottoming out means it’s time to start over in New York. The Jets really have no other choice. Whatever they are in the second half of this desultory 2014 season, they shouldn’t be Geno Smith’s team anymore. With everyone in save-their-job mode, what’s the point? We’ve seen what Geno is with the Jets, and he’s not their future.

After investing a season and a half in Smith, the Jets know he is a turnover machine prone to killer mistakes. He threw three interceptions in less than 11 minutes in the first quarter against the Bills -- getting himself benched in the process -- and now has a whopping 37 giveaways in 24 professional games, with 31 of those being interceptions. In half of his 24 games, he has committed at least two turnovers. You could ride the rest of the season out with him because, well, he’s a high second-round pick, but that’s just the definition of insanity. The Jets can keep expressing confidence and patience with Smith’s development if they care to, but it will sound emptier than ever at this sad point.

It’s time for the Jets to cut their losses and keep Smith on the bench, because there’s no putting Geno back in this bottle.

In one of the worst showings you’ll ever see a quarterback turn in, Smith finished 2-of-8 for five yards passing, with those three interceptions and a 0.0 passer rating. He was under center for just 12 plays, with the Bills catching more of his passes than the Jets. Smith has had decent games in the past, but it’s the same pattern over and over with him. He can’t string multiple strong performances together and reverts to his turnover-prone form far too often.

No, Michael Vick is not the long-term answer either. That’s equally obvious. Vick took over for Smith against the Bills and wound up committing three turnovers of his own, making the Jets the first team since the not-quite-immortal 1991 Phoenix Cardinals to play two quarterbacks who committed three turnovers in the same game. Move over Chris Chandler and Stan Gelbaugh, you’ve got company.

Unless practice-squad passer Matt Simms gets a shot and catches fire -- and I wouldn’t lay that bet in Vegas -- the Jets don’t have their quarterback of the future on the roster at the moment. But if Rex Ryan has any chance to keep his job, a scenario that’s looking more unlikely by the minute, he might as well start Vick and try to win a few games before the season mercifully ends. Running Smith back out there will only hasten Ryan’s own exit.

i'm not even sure Vick really wants to play. On the plus side it looks like they'll get a very high pick and can take a qb in next years draft.
