NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (1 Viewer)

Mushnick:

Kevin Weekes, NHL Network analyst and former Rangers goaltender, continues to credit good goaltending to “maintaining visual attachment to the puck.” That’s why there are very few blind goalies.

==============================

Doc Emrick, on the verbal fly during Wednesday’s Flyers-Rangers game on NBCSN, addressed Philadelphia defenseman Nick Schultz: “… from Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, population 800,” then continued his play-by-play. He’s the best.

Caps finally getting better goaltending from Holtby of late.In his last 5 starts he is 4-1 and has a .946 SP so that is a very good sign if he continues this run of solid play.

Ovie has a good night and scored a pretty sweet GWG and also made a sweet pass to setup Backstrom on the first goal of the night.

Troubling though and still a huge problem has been not being able to hold 3rd period leads and they gave up another one last night but were bailed out late.

I hope Tanguay is ok after taking that Ovie shot to the jaw, that looked brutal live and even worse on the replay

Hawks rookie D man Trevor Van Riemsdyk out ~3 months. Fractured Patella from blocking a shot, undergoing surgery today. Sucks, kid was playing really well and Q was increasing his minutes.
Yeah. Feel bad for the kid. Opens up the door for some of the others though. Clendening with his first goal was nice.

What is going on in Toronto? Now everyone is in an uproar because the Leafs skipped the center ice stick salute after last night's win?
While I think being "in an uproar" about it is going a little far, I can understand fans being upset. It's supposed to be an acknowledgement of the fans who came out to support you, and not doing it is a middle finger back to them I'm guessing for how they've felt they've been treated after recent play. I'm sure not every fan was booing and throwing their jerseys on the ice, and you're painting all of them with a broad brush by ignoring them.

Now if someone getting upset about it is the same guy who threw his jersey on the ice in disgust, yeah he's a ####.

Puck Daddy on the Leafs

Of course they're playing to get their coach fired, but not in the intentional way that the ravening Toronto mitten-stringers would have loved to hear confessed. Instead, they're playing to get their coach fired because their coach hasn't imparted to them a type of hockey that results in wins. Losing teams get coaches fired, and the Leafs are — and always will be — a losing team under Carlyle.
Meanwhile, Kessel has 23 points in 20 games, which is impressive when you consider that he plays with Tyler Bozak. In and of itself, this is a problem. It's an old argument, but here it is anyway: Bozak has repeatedly shown he's not a first-line center, but this neither prevented the Leafs from signing him to a lucrative, long-term deal, and continuing to use him as Kessel's pivot. And it's not for want of better options, because Nazem Kadri is right there being underused. Under Carlyle in seasons not including this one, Kessel has played almost four times as many minutes at 5-on-5 with Bozak than Kadri (about 1,457 to 365) and guess which one has the higher goals-for percentage with Kessel. It is, of course, Kadri (55.6 to 54.4). This year the gap is even more pronounced at 50 percent for Kadri to 42.1 percent for Bozak. This isn't an advanced stat, this is goals-for and goals-against. The Leafs score more, and have for two years, when Kessel and Kadri were on the ice at the same time. So of course they have a grand total of 436:51 TOI at 5-on-5 together.
This is very much Nonis's team at this point, and all he's done is shuffle out good players and bring in pale imitations at best in the hopeless pursuit of toughness and leadership, which definitively do not win you games when the talent isn't there.

And Carlyle is a guy given a not-terrible roster (not a good one either, mind you) and taken it down to the dregs of the league. It's honestly difficult to see how anyone without a vested interest defends him from these attacks any more. Again, none but the Sabres have turned in worse possession numbers since he took over, and the Leafs don't even have a high draft pick in the last few years to show for it. They made the playoffs once as a fluke and, in an even bigger fluke, had one of the biggest meltdowns in NHL history. Fitting really.

TRADE ALERT:

Pagnotta: Well, speaking of Sharks earlier... They've just announced they've acquired Brenden Dillon from DAL for Jason Demers and a 2016 3rd RD pick

Wow.

Where does Demers likely fit in D's defensive plans?
Demers was seeing 3rd pairing minutes in San Jose. He could probably get an upgrade in Dallas to the 2nd pairing and possibly some 2nd unit PP time, but they seem to be riding Klingberg right now.

I don't like that trade for Dallas.

Told the #SJSharks retained 35% of Demers's salary in that Dillon trade with #stars.

I can't get a good read on this one. Dillon younger with more upside, which probably exlains the 3rd round sweetener, but Demers has generally been a solid all-around player. I guess Dallas wanted another RHD.

Rookie Khokhlachev getting the call to center Lucic and Griffith tonight with Krejci still banged up. Let's see what the kid can do.

Demers is decent, but I like Dillon's upside quite a bit. Rugged and can move the puck well enough, thought he's the guy they build around on the blue line. They are a mess defensively so I understand why they continue to shake it up but I wouldn't have moved him.

I've got a real sickness. I'm watching the UTEP/Rice game getting kind of bored wondering if any NHL games are on. So I'm now watching NHL on the Fly.

Caps generated a ton of shots but not much traffic in front of Enroth or created many PP's with only 1(the only goal).

Typical trap game for a mediocre team but hat tip to the Sabres for skating hard and outworking them when it counted.
