Three high stakes FFPC dynasty leagues, got a first round bye in all three.

One of the leagues I am 11-0 with 43 out of 44 possible victory points.

:nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

I would put myself in the top 1%. That probably sounds a lot better than it really is though. There are a lot of royal idiots out there playing this game.

I used to be in a league with guys who brought laptops with Excel spreadsheets and several magazines to the draft. I, on the other hand, would show up with a pencil, and that was if I remembered that much. I'd have the sheets that they printed out as my only reference. One year I said "I'll take Colt McCoy." And everyone looked at me weird. I said, "The running back?" They all laughed and said, "You mean LeSean McCoy? "

I won the whole thing that year.
I used to use the USA Today to do the stats as an commish in the early days.
First couple of years I played it was all about USA Today. Figuring the points. Arguing that the paper was wrong. Good times.
I remember going to your house and glumpy was there(pig cooked to perfection), when it was the first NC FF league with FBG players. I won the league and wife took second. The next year we drafted at BNB's where by dog got to jump of the pier and swim. Man we have been here a long time.
Yes we have sir.

in the last 3 years, I have a record of 1822-16. I have won 138 championships in that time frame.

I haven't played in about four years. I quit because it's just too time-consuming. Spent about twenty hours a week on 3-4 leagues. When I played, I won about 30% of my money leagues. I came to believe there are two major factors in winning.

1. You've got to be a good statistician and study relentlessly.

2. You've got to be able to recognize exceptional talent by watching.

Many people are good at one or the other, and some are not good at either. Very few are good at both. Additionally, you've got to keep up a high level of commitment and study throughout the season. You can't let up, even for one week.

I say it's only about 10% luck.

It's way more than ten percent. I have had guys in their primes with good teams surrounding them go out and tear an ACL in practice. Done for the year. No one touched them just planted wrong. Just like for real teams luck plays a fairly significant role.

This is why even with a good team you have to be waiver wire diligent.

And there I am getting crushed. Still those were fun drafts. Meeting so many people who had formerly just been screen names. Glumpy's awesome whole pig roasts. BNBs place on the lake. Very good times.

True. But with you guys there was slim pickings most of the time. Not many players slipping through.

You know, I think it really depends on what level you're playing at. I've found that even in really tough leagues, you can usually recover from a top injury. Pretty much everyone's going to have injuries during the season anyway, as well as sub sub performers.

Your point one is wrong........to this extent. I am a football fan and been in fantasy football since around 1992. I don't do any stats and don't study anything much. I watch the NFL and nothing more. You have know the talent out there the new talent is scooped up too soon with all the info out there in this day and age. So with steady eddy over new talent.

Well my memory can be dicey but I think it was Glumpy's house. I was pretty comfortable though.

Outside was the pig cooker and it was pretty enclosed by trees but not too much. House was white, we drafted inside...........everyone was VDB drafting. BNB's was at a trailer in paradise, he had the dock on the lake just a great place........drafted inside there too.

So you're good at the second factor. You may win local leagues. But I would guess you don't win, or maybe play in, tough high dollar online leagues. I maintain you have to study A LOT to win top leagues.

You've got to be a cross between a geek and a jock to be great at FFA.

Yeah that was Glumpy's old place. IIRC he has moved.

No pics from that draft??

I've won a couple of championships but I'm pretty average.

Honestly with the info overload out there now I don't know how anyone can be "good". You read more? You aren't smarter than the experts. There's a saturation point where it becomes luck and it's easy now to reach that saturation point.

I am so good I have been banned from playing at most websites because it is just not fair.

None that I am aware of. Got to remember this was before every cell phone had a megapixel camera on it. I don't recall anyone with a camera being there. I don't think ti even occurred to us to try to get a picture. Should have though. Over the years a lot of the FFA Carolina contingent have played in that league.

After looking at that draft some more I think my best pick was actually my last. Got a QB with a near career year with my last pick. Too bad he had such a low ceiling.

I am not good at FF any longer. I don't do prep work and only watch 30 minutes of the NFL each week at most. I have played in the same friend league for 12 years.

I used to live for FF and won the league once and finished second twice. The winning came over a 5 year period that ended about 5 years ago.

I just play FF now to stay connected to long time friends. I don't care about the winning or losing. I laugh at the guys that are crazy devoted. Seems like a waste of time.
This is me to a T

My first draft pick was James Stewart, I think I picked #6 overall in a 14 team league, 2000. His first year with Detroit.

Paired him with a guy who apparently always got hurt in his last year, named Robert Smith. Looking back, not too shabby. Good times, good times.

I think my first draft was maybe 99. Yahoo autodraft with some people I knew. Warner and Faulk with my first 2 picks the year they went nuts. Won easily. I thought I had it figured out. Played until 2005. Quit until 2010. Enjoy it as much as ever, even though I don't have the time I used to have.

Usually do pretty well, but this year has been a disaster.

I enjoy it enough to keep playing, though not as much as I used to, and around this time every year I'm ready for the season to end, get tired of chasing waiver wire pickups, etc. even when my teams are doing well.

My first ever pick was Dan Marino. I'm old and have been doing this for a long time. 2 main leagues. Make the playoffs just about every year in both. In one of them I am by far the best owner and have been in the most title games..... and have lost them all. It's become a running joke.

Still fun though. But with all the tech I find myself remembering fondly the late 80s and early 90s when we had to do everything from the newspaper and got the league newsletter in the mail.

Usually pretty hit or miss, but have been on a very lucky streak the last few years in my 2 main leagues (mediocre in the other two).

Redraft league: Played in each of the last 3 championship games, winning 2 of them. Currently in 1st place this year. Casual league, pretty average quality of opponent.

Dynasty/contract league: Played in 4 of the last 5 championship games, winning 3. Currently in 1st place (by a huge margin) this year. Serious league, got lucky with a few players years back and have been able to keep rolling them forward into more good players. Go really lucky this year with Bell/Murray both breaking out huge.

I play in 3 leagues a year. The first one I draft for is usually the worst I do, because I don't look at a thing until the night before any more. Just don't care any more.

I generally finish 1-2-3 in my league for points scored out of sixteen (this year fourteen). I love the stuff. But even I can't follow it anymore like I used to, and I'm relatively new to the hobby. The constant news push-and-pull is too much for an impulsive person. I don't hold guys as long as I should, and I try to divine completely arbitrary decisions from journalists and nebulous sources. All of which leads to a lot of second-guessing.

I'd be interested to see what I could do in a real money league with FAAB and auction drafts, etc. against really top competition Probably would get wiped.

eta* Also not a stats guy, really a game watcher.

My first yr drafted randall Cunningham, chris warren, sterling sharpe, irving fryar, keith jackson and Arizona defense, which because of Buddy Ryan put up ridiculous scores under our scoring system. Showed up at the draft with a laptop just for show, didnt actually use it but it set the tone. Won the league.

The main problem with fantasy football is the small sample size.... unless you have a bazillion teams or play the daily leagues or something... if you're just the guy with 1-3 teams then a 13 week regular season with some playoffs is pretty much putting yourself at the mercy of luck... a lot.

Now, there is no question that if you spend time at least reading about fantasy football and paying attention to it that you can do better... although I wouldn't call it skill as much as "effort".

The problem is that the effort has varying degrees of payoff for you... I had a team that FBG's ranked as a 99% chance to make the playoffs.. i crushed the draft... but I've drafted every single guy that got suspended, injured, or is having a huge off year (eff you AJ Green).

Last year when I crushed the draft AND was having a great season, it was enjoyable... this year, not so much.

I only continue to play FFL and will continue to play in the future to have an excuse to hang out with my friends on draft day and stay connected to them.

I still run my 2 leagues, but I'm definitely not as into it as I was.... frankly I'm averaging about 1-2 hours of viewed NFL football a week vs. 6-8 in days past.

I guess it's a symptom of getting older and having your priorities shift.... I thought FFL was the best thing ever between 15 y.o. and 30
gb you

80 teams 71 in masters ff. 64% winning percentage. 2 team out of it, 9 teams with 1st round bye at this time. All 100+ leagues. FFPC. 4 teams 3 made playoffs. 3 yahoo all in good shape. Then a few personal leagues. I don't share advice.
Jealous of anyone who is great at FF, would love to be able to do this at least one year.

I'm awful at fantasy football and not for lack of trying. I won one championship about 4 years in when I got lucky with Antonio Gates and Muhsin Muhammad, but I was a HS student live drafting against my dad and all his work buddies so it's the one I would have wanted to win if I could choose
