This is supposedly a biggie. The last time we had a significant one was 1960. Thoughts are we are overdue and this could be on that scale. Guess we'll see tomorrow when our world turns into the TV show Revolution.

I read the first few sentences, every synapse in my brain fired at once, my eyes rolled back, and my head hit the desk.

What the hell are those nerds babbling about?

Electronics could get fried tomorrow. Satellites, communication and a lot of other issues could happen. We just don't know. On the plus side, the Northern Lights should be visible much further south than normal.

Serious question. We will he on a beach all weekend. Will this cause more potential for sunburn by then?

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

Worst case, we lose some satellites and the power grid acts up for a while
Thanks. That's all I needed to know.Take note, Sheik.
I didn't write the article.
Maybe you should have.

Would have been a lot funnier if I did.

Uh huh.

Can we go back to before the morons took over the internet? That would be nice.
Who are you referring to?
Have you been on the internet, lately?
I have. I just didn't know how it was pertaining to this thread.
Not this thread in particular. The internet, in general. The people who post that they're eating dinner, and take pictures of it. The people who make vague comments on Facebook in a "Hey, everybody look at me" kind of manner. The people who take video of the Knockout Game and put it online. Just wish we could go back to a time before all of that, is what I'm saying.

So you can be first at doing it?

This

This looks mostly like an Aurora producing event. Not a burn the high tension wires down event. Although they are X1 level so the possibility exists for some impacts.

Yep, still not strong enough for them to make it far enough south for me. That would take a dangerously large one.

Serious question...If these are particle storms, they're likely traveling at or near the speed of light, right?

If that's the case, how do we have advanced notice? i.e. How do we get notice (in the form of something we get/detect here on Earth) of something that travels at the speed of light?

If these particle storms DON'T travel at the speed of light, ignore my stupidity.

I believe the correct answer is that these are not light particles, but magnetic waves. And that's why they are not traveling at the speed of light. I could be off on this. But when these flares happen, there is usually about 2 days notice from the flare up until they reach Earth.

The light already reached us. In fact, just minutes after the CME, some parts of the earth experienced radio blackouts. So we already saw what happened on the sun.

What is still coming torwards us is a plasma consisting of electrons and protons, as well as helium, oxygen and iron. When they hit the earth, they produce the northern lights as our atmosphere does its thing to repell them.

Thanks all. I know enough about astronomy to know when things don't make sense...I don't know enough about this kind of thing to know that it wasn't what I thought...
