These are the countries that have outlawed corporal punishment, and the year they did it. In these countries, there is no debate about whether such treatment is "discipline" or abuse. It's all abuse, and it's illegal. Why don't we just make it illegal here?

This is the crime here. It's not about the NFL and when / how long they suspend.

Hope the family can move past this, especially the kid.
I still don't view this as a crime. He thought he was doing the right thing and was trying to be a good parent. In everything that has been released, that's what has stood out. He clearly needs parents classes but there's zero intent of hurting his son.
Of course he was intending to hurt his son.

Generally, what is or isn't a crime is a question of law left to the individual states. And, for the most part, corporal punishment is, at least to an extent, criminalized in our states.

Exactly. One swat is not intending to hurt his son. 15+ blows to a 5 year old boy that drew blood is intent to hurt. The boy arms were bloodied as well from trying to block the blows. How can a man, any kind of man keep on delivering blows to a screaming bleeding child?

You realize there are good parents who just happen to not be a good marital match, correct?

WTF?

Of course part of one's intent in swatting another is to cause them some level of physical pain or annoyance.

I'm still amazed that

1. The Vikings are actually going to let him play this Sunday

2. Thus far, the NFL has not taken any action

I don't understand what the heck they're thinking about. Public image is everything to the NFL. This is TERRIBLE public image for the NFL.
Tim, you're smarter than this. Can we please recognize that there's some nuance to these issues?

Does not make what AP did right. It disgusts me.

However, if you think that even abusive discipline of a parent equates to punching your wife out with a left hook, that's ridiculous. This is not a clear black and white issue. There is a large swarth of the culture for whom this is understandable, possibly even acceptable.

If anything, this can hopefully bring about a constructive dialogue so kids don't end up being beat like this (or at all).
I wasn't comparing what AP did to what Rice did, though, since you asked, I find them to equally disgusting.

But that wasn't at all the point of my post.
i bet that there are cultures that are ok with this also

Hell, there are cultures that are ok with dousing your wife with gasoline and setting them afire or throwing acid in their face.

CBS 11 Houston reports Adrian Peterson is being investigated for another child abuse accusation involving one of his other sons.
According to the news station, one of Peterson's four-year-old son's was disciplined by Peterson for cursing at one of his siblings. The boy sustained a scar over his right eye. Peterson has at least five children with multiple different women, and is believed to have as many as seven kids out of wedlock. If more information comes to light, the Vikings could discipline Peterson yet again.

So if the Vikings are handling this, we're talking anywhere from 5 to 7 games here as far as we (and AP) knows. Good to know.

HOUSTON -- Photos and text messages obtained by the I-Team reveal another incident in which Adrian Peterson is accused of injuring another son while disciplining the boy.

The four-year-old is by a different mother than the alleged victim in the Montgomery County case, in which Peterson is charged with felony injury to a child. In that case, Peterson admits to repeatedly striking the boy with a tree branch or "switch," but has maintained he did not intend to harm the child, and was using his judgment as a parent to discipline his son.

The latest incident allegedly occurred last June, while the boy, who lives out of state, was visiting Peterson at his gated home in Spring. A photo, allegedly texted by Peterson to the boy's mother, shows a head wound to the boy covered by two bandages. Other photos, allegedly taken weeks later, reveal a scar over his right eye.

The text messages also describe an exchange about what happened. They contain numerous misspellings and shorthand:

Mother: "What happened to his head?"

Peterson: "Hit his head on the Carseat."

Mother: "How does that happen, he got a whoopin in the car."

Peterson: "Yep."

Mother: "Why?"

Peterson: "I felt so bad. But he did it his self."

The text messages go on to show Peterson saying he was disciplining his son for cussing to a sibling.

"It's absolutely criminal," said Randy Burton, a former chief prosecutor of family crimes in Harris County, and founder of the advocacy group Justice for Children.

"You break the skin, you have bleeding, much less permanent scars, that is a crime," Burton said.

But no charges were ever filed. Sources confirm the mother filed a report with Child Protective Services, but the outcome of any CPS investigation is unclear.

So is the method of the delivering the wound, according to the text messages.

Mother: "What did you hit him with?"

Peter never directly answered, but later replied: "Be still n take ya whooping he would have saved the scare (scar). He aight (all right)"

"This is very damaging information," Burton said.

Damaging, Burton said, because prosecutors in Montgomery County can use it as evidence in the felony case against Peterson.

"To prove intent, that it was not an accident, and to show that it was a course of conduct," Burton said.

"It wasn't a one-off," he said.

A spokesperson for Peterson's attorney said the law office of Rusty Hardin and Associates had no comment.

Many countries have immigration laws different than ours. Based on this logic we should implement those laws too.

All of those countries, except Israel (shocking) and Chile have also outlawed the death penalty. Good luck getting that done here, particularly in states like Texas, where they like their killing and spanking.

True, I could see the women not wanting him around to beat the kids. Either that, or he may be such a ##### that none of those women want to be married to an NFL superstar.

There's way too much judgement in this thread. AP has had a lot of kids out of wedlock (four I believe) but has a relationship with all of them.

I think he meant the story would have not been there if he was married and a full-time dad. Which makes even less sense and is actually worse. Time with your kids buys you abuse cover?

This is the crime here. It's not about the NFL and when / how long they suspend.

Hope the family can move past this, especially the kid.
I still don't view this as a crime. He thought he was doing the right thing and was trying to be a good parent. In everything that has been released, that's what has stood out. He clearly needs parents classes but there's zero intent of hurting his son.
What if someone had zero intent of killing a person while driving home drunk. They need driving lessons?
The crime is knowingly driving while drinking. It's not as if you were driving for some "intended good" reason and ended up hurting someone.

You could equate it, I SUPPOSE to those who won't seek proper medical care because of "faith" - they "think" its for the right reason, but that hardly makes it acceptable. Still you need to have that perspective to really understand, not to say judge, the situation.

These are the countries that have outlawed corporal punishment, and the year they did it. In these countries, there is no debate about whether such treatment is "discipline" or abuse. It's all abuse, and it's illegal. Why don't we just make it illegal here?
  • when Denmark did it, it was the 9/11 of outlawing corporal punishment
  • This post is the 9/11 of copy and pasting from Wikipedia
I just couldn't decide which direction to go

Man AP has stepped in it now. Obviously he beats his kids. Probably a mix of him thinking it's ok, and him having a bit of a "I'm Adrian Peterson and I can do whatever I want" complex.

He probably rationalizes that it's ok because he was beaten and still loves his dad.

I think all his baby mommas are about to come out of the closet and he's gonna be cooked.

Wait. .. there's another kid?
I don't even think he knows how many kids he has.
Not from a morality standpoint but from a business one, these guys just have no sense whatsoever. Antonio Cromarte has 12 kids by eight different women, three of the kids are about the same age. So many of these guys end up going broke two or three years after football, mostly because of all these ####### kids they have on the payroll. Stupid.

Peterson has never denied this is how he parents. He was never charged in the other case so he probably continued to think what he was doing was alright.

If I owned a team in the NFL I would give out 2M bonus for any player who gets a vasectomy

I remember reading this. Good for him trying to sort out all the responsibility before its too late.

I also think I read he is now snipped.

Just got done putting my boys to bed. I was a little more patient with them tonight, held them a little closer, and told them I loved them a few extra times.
