Man Fined $525 For Drink Refill

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A man who refilled his 89-cent drink at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Charleston found it cost a lot more than he expected when he was fined $525.

WCSC-TV reports there are signs at the Medical Center notifying patrons that drink refills are not free. When Christopher Lewis of North Charleston refilled his drink without paying Wednesday, a federal police officer gave him a ticket with a fine of $525.

Lewis is a construction worker and says he never noticed the signs and has refilled his drink without paying at other times.

The VA issued a statement that Lewis was ticketed for shoplifting. It said the amount of the fine is not determined by the VA.

Lewis says he will contest the fine in federal court.

This guy is a habitual criminal and needs to be stopped. Hopefully South Carolina has e a "three strikes and you're out" policy and they can throw him in jail for life!

While I agree that the fine is very excessive, my wife is a psychiatrist in Charleston and is at the VA once a week. She said there's no way anyone could miss the signs. Still, the cop telling him to pay for his refill would've worked.

I wonder if the officer offered a soliloquy of this sort before writing the ticket?

All of you know full well, the great pains I've always taken never to be too strict, too rigid with the application of our laws, and as a consequence, have we not learned to live together in relative peace and harmony, huh? And this day's lawlessness is how you repay my leniency. Well you leave me with little choice. An assault on the king's soda is the same as an assault on the king himself.

Exactly. You really can't miss the signs, but you have the guy pay and warn him to not let it happen again.ps - tell your wife to come by IT and say hello.

"A hospital spokesperson says it was her understanding that Lewis was aggressive during the confrontation."

I think there is a lot more to this story than being reported. It goes from the cop asking if he was going to pay to the cop not allowing him to pay.

Amazingly everyone is aggressive every time something stupid happens involving a cop these days.

Seems like in a public place like that there would be enough witnesses one way or the other.

So your wife is a psychiatrist that means you can say her opinion and try to pass it off as a fact ? Cool

RIF
why mention the psychiatrist bit at all then? Seems like it was placed there for a reason, the reason being he wants us to treat her opinion as a fact. Common fallacy people do constantly

Not at all. I don't respect psychiatrists at all, I think they cause more problems then solve in the name of greed.

Well, if he's done it 590 times, it's pretty much a wash.

Or perhaps he was explaining why he his wife was at the VA every week.

It isn't necessary to explain why his wife is there, so I disagree

Wasn't aware someone died and left you in charge of what is and isn't necessary. Well I don't accept your authority and really to me you are what isn't necessary here. Jut another troll with nothing of substance or entertainment to add. Don't you have a white power story to be cutting and pasting?

It's also stunning how many dead people were clearly resisting arrests, according to police accounts.

I was just explaining why my wife is there.

I think I'm most upset that there aren't free refills at the freakin VA Hospital. That's kinda messed up. I mean, I'm sure if they charged for refills for civilians, then maybe we could afford to at least let the vets get a second coke on the house. Christ.

If he would have said "my wife is at the VA once a week and there is no way you can miss those signs." some jerk on the internet would have probably made a crappy comment and jumped to conclusions about why his wife was at the VA once a week. You don't know any jerks like that on the internet do you?

More than likely, the cafeteria is run by a company like Sodexho and not the VA itself.

It's run by VCS, the Veterans Canteen Service. It isn't part of the hospital, but still part of the VA system.

So a generalized statement calling all psychiatrist greedy? Nice. My wife makes significantly less money to go to the VA once a week, but does it because there's a need and she's helping out. She could stay at her regular job and make about 15% more a year, but likes helping vets. Heck, she's even practicing out of her specialization, and does a lot more therapy than she should. The days she goes to the VA she puts in about a 12 hour day when she's scheduled for 8 because patients stay over, but she stays and doesn't complain at all. The only person spouting useless information is you.

I was speaking generally , there are exceptions of course and maybe your wife is one of them. I am referring to the psychiatrists that prescribe medicine like its candy because its easy $$ for them.

Can't the same be said for just about any specialty in medicine? Everything from antibiotics to pain pills is over prescribed from doctors from all medical specialties. My wife's psychiatric specialty is so under served, it would actually probably hinder her business to just push drugs. Heck, she loses patients because she won't prescribe certain meds unless needed.

There are very few threads that my wife's profession would come up in, but I did feel like I had a unique view in this situation.
