Ebola (1 Viewer)

Just trying to understand your position on this Sheik. So you're okay with the U.S. sending medical professionals to Africa to assist with the Ebola outbreak, but then they have to stay there? Should we require that all medical personnel do a full 21 day isolated quarantine in Africa before coming home?
Screw em, they chose to go there, they can stay there! When no one else will go over there that's their problem.
Interestingly Cuba has the largest contingent of heakth care professionals in situ battling Ebola
So we can send them to Guantanamo?

Just trying to understand your position on this Sheik.
really? He's been very clear.
I believe he wants clarification if he really thinks we should be giving American doctors a death sentence for helping Ebola victims in Africa, if they happen to contract Ebola while there, by forcing them to stay there and not allow them to come home, to their country, for the best treatment in the world.

Personally, I don't think that's what Sheik is saying.

I think it's more "They should quarantine for 21 hours, if they display symptoms get properly medivac'd out to a US hospital prepared for it and treated.

21 hours ain't gonna cut it! Two years in Guantanamo!

All kidding aside I think we're pretty much there now. People coming from the affected regions have to fly into 5 specific airports for screening. I think, but could be mistaking this with another story, they also have to check in for monitoring for 21 days after arrival.

The recent Frontline episode on Ebola was really interesting.
What did you get out of it? Might not get a chance to see it.
Ebola Outbreak

It was only half the episode, with the remaining talking about Boko Haram.

It focuses on a medical outpost in Sierra Leone and Doctors Without Borders. While it truly is horrifying what's going on over there, my takeaway is how hard it actually is to contract. You seriously have to be caring for a sick person, or in extremely close proximity, to be at high risk. Not that it was the point of the episode or even acknowledged but it seemed like many of those affected were caring for loved ones with the virus. You would have thought the little town that was spotlighted would have been wiped out very quickly.

D'oh! Yes, 21 days but it does look like that, but I'm ok with precautions, just don't go crazy.

That was a strong takeaway. Not enough Americans will take in that message from Frontline, but hopefully Ebola will be able to fall off the public-consciousness horizon before long as America realizes the dang virus isn't spreading anywhere.

The doctor being tested in NYC now has been in voluntary self-quarantine since he returned to the U.S. from Guinea. I am thiking most all returning health-care workers will be doing that -- might as well wait out the self-quarantine at home rather than in West Africa if you can catch your flight(s) before symptoms start (if infected).

EDIT Fri 10/24/2014: Totally wrongon my part -- Spencer was self-monitoring his temperature and vitals, but was NOT self-quarantining.

Is going bowling part of the standard self-quarantine?

And was in Uber cars. That's the type of quarantine that's not boreantine.

Just saw a crawl. He tested positive for Ebola
damn it. I thought I was going to be done.

Sounds like a no-brainer to me. I mean seriously, these guys are UNKNOWINGLY coming back with the #### KNOWING they've been in the Ebola zone which puts them at risk. Why wouldn't you quarantine yourself before flying back? Just for the sake of the ones you love.

It's early.....but I think it's very positive that the death rate in the U.S. is so low. Perhaps the disease isn't as dangerous as we thought if treated early on. Or maybe it's a bad sample size. Or maybe the mortality rate changes depending on hiw quickly you get treated.

So far mortality rate in this country is positice but we obviously have a lot to learn about the disease.

Guy just started feelin symptoms yesterday and gave a detailed list of whoever hes been in contact with. Went bowling in brooklyn last week but thankfully he had no symptoms. Can you imagine?

Of course it's a no-brainer. It's selfish to go over there and help then come back and expose your family immediately.

Not sure why. Even Doctors who are probably taking quite a lot of precautions are getting it. There are no travel restrictions. There are going to be a few cases pop up here. Tragically his wife might be at high risk of getting it now.

The kicker here is, of course, an externally symptomatic Ebola patient -- one that is actually capable of passing on the virus -- is never going to be on a commercial flight. Never.
What are you considering external here? Visible bleeding? I could've sworn that the guy that kicked off infections in Nigeria was on a commercial flight, was vomiting, had diarrhea, and collapsed once he got off the plane. I think he also infected/killed his doctor.
Reading up more on Patrick Sawyer (Nigeria's Patient Zero, link1. link2), that happened on a flight out of Liberia back in July.

Suffice it to say airlines worldwide are much more hip to the risks now. No virus-shedding Ebola patient will be getting on commercial flights in the U.S., and this will almost certainly hold up elsewhere.
except for last week. And last month. But never again!
If ebola goes away it's not going to be because of the airlines. They won't be able to detect ebola and it's hilarious that anyone actually thinks they will.

If you want to stop ebola from coming from West Africa, ban flights from West Africa. Pretty simple stuff.

sure lets see if his wife gets it, or the uber driver or any of his bowling team.

So far, from what we have seen, it seems that is very unlikely to happen.

You forgot the RW writeup.

We like ebola as a sleeper disease this year but make sure you handcuff with enterovirus 68.

Can we have an Ebola, SARS, Hanta Virus, H1N1, One Direction show US fatality toteboard please?

They should send the terrorist with the hatchet in NYC in to clean up the puke and crap from this guy. Then just isolate the dude and sell pay per view to watch Ebola ravage him.

Funny tweets:

How did you get ebola? You rented some bowling shoes on Wednesday night and had a scratch on your toe? Thats bad luck, man.

Headed home to Williamsburg. Skipping tonight's bowling plan.
