what's to stop you committing check fraud like this (1 Viewer)

go buy a fake ID. one of the good ones that run $100-150, not some ####house one.

fake a payroll check. way easier to fake one of these than an actual check from a checkbook imo - not easy but can be done with a decent art program and printer imo. you're not trying to fool a bank or their machines anyway. just good enough to be passable at the local liquor store. make the check payable to the name on the fake ID.

go cash it at the local liquor store on a Thursday (make the check payable the next day, Friday), make sure the camera doesn't get a decent look at your face.

and that's it - they write the information from your fake ID onto the check (license # or whatever), give a fake phone number if they ask, bounce with your cash from your 'paycheck.' they don't find out it is totally bogus until they try to deposit it the next day.

I wouldn't do this because I don't want to go to jail for fraud over $800 or whatever but I'm just saying: it seems easy to do.

Great plan scoresman, great plan. Lots of trouble to net $650 - $700. Do liquor stores even cash checks for that much? Doubt it.

Excellent point. Keep looking at the sun.

Because I'm not a criminal?

And if I wanted to go to jail for fraud, I wouldn't do it for a piddly amount like $800. I'd go all Bernie Madoff or Jordan Belfort and go for the big money.

I think you answered your own question here, sport."What's to stop you from holding up an armored car?"

"What's to stop you from stealing cars and selling them for parts?"

"What's to stop you from printing fake $20s on your laser printer?"

:lmao:

And yeah, a liquor store isn't going to cash a random $800 check. There are a ton of ways to successfully commit check fraud, this idea is pretty terrible.

why not just rob the cashier at gunpoint? make sure not to let the camera get a look at your face. give a fake number if they ask.

This type of fraud is becoming less and less possible as many grocery stores and places like Walmart cam tell instantly if a check will clear.

the idea is you dont do it at walmart or a grocery store. you do it at the liquor store down the street owned by a vietnamese guy.

Seems like a lot of effort. Most of the smaller liquor/convenience store places have those stand-alone ATM machines that aren't affiliated with a major bank. Independent network. Most of them never bother updating the software of changing the maintenance access codes. You can download the instruction manuals online, and if you need a key, you can get them off ebay cheap. Pop in to the store, punch in the access code, and take the money right out. Either get it to empty the cash tray, or, tell it it's full of $1 bills and withdraw $100 from a pre-paid credit card. It'll spit out 100 $20s. Walk away.
This sounds like a much better plan.

Anyone see the 60 minutes a few weeks ago showing the simplicity of filing fraudulent tax returns? Simple scam you do from your living room, no need to speak with anyone and no hiding from cameras. Just creating bogus returns with minimal info and sending refunds to previously purchased prepaid credit cards. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/irs-scam-identity-tax-refund-fraud-60-minutes/

I used to be in no hurry to file. Not no more. If a scammer file's under your name before you do then you could be in for a lot of aggravation.

In your neighborhood? Gotcha.
no.
Exactly. Not in your neighborhood. That would be silly. You were talking about the one down the street.

This happened to a buddy I worked with. It was an absolute nightmare to get the IRS to fix it. Several years after it happened he was still dealing with it.

I got to admit this is pretty genius. Sick, but genius.

I wouldn't do it because I wouldn't want the guy laughing at me for having a "paycheck" of only $800.
