ARI Safeties.....going forward (1 Viewer)

I am really enjoying watching what ARI is doing with their Safeties. I want to know whom to get going forward.

Tony Jefferson was faded out of this last weekend. It looks like a foregone conclusion that he will be the first one out.

Rashad Johnson has been very consistent and playing a very solid game and 100% of the snaps. A playmaker who is also lining up close to the line of scrimmage on many occasions. He tackles pretty well and is not going anywhere. My gut tells me that he will be officially the SS.

Honey Badger Mathieu is finally starting to feel healthy and this past week he out-snapped Jefferson 50-15. He will play 100% by the next 2 weeks and probably be the FS. He needs to given space and do what he does. He is always around the ball and is the ultimate playmaker. He becomes a must add.

The outlier, yet most intriguing, is Deonne Buchannan. As a 2014 First rounder, the club obviously has high hopes for him. My take is that they wanted to put him at SS immediately to start the season and have him and Mathieu man the Safety positions, they did not expect Rashad Johnson (and Jefferson for that matter) play so well. He also played 50 snaps of 65 against WASH this past weekend, most of them as an LB in nickel and most base packages. He missed some assignments but is a missile who hits hard and has great anticipation. I don't think he can supplant Johnson though at SS just yet, especially with Rashad playing so well. Or will we?

Will they be playing Buchannon more at LB and some nickel S? Don't know what their intentions are but he will certainly be a stud for many years to come. He can really play. Do any of you ARIZ homers have any info on what the future holds for us in regards to these players?

Not a Zona homer and haven't got any insider insights but I am also interested in the Cardinals DBs.

FS Rashad Johnson: Played in all 5 games and never has had less than 5 tackles in any game.

- 29 solos

- 4 assists

- 1 sack

- 2 INTs

- 1 TD

- 2 PDs

He is the top scoring DB in our ESPN league and he's coming off a monster game with 2 INTs, one a pick six on top of 6 solos and 2 assists to go with 2 PDs. He is the most consistent and he also packs big-play punch.

Tyrann Mathieu: Played in four games with limited snaps>

- 10 solos

- 1 PD

He's coming back from injury sooner than expected and they are easing him in. He is capable of making big plays and I think they will come soon.

Sorting through the others I think you have a good grasp. Tony Jefferson's play and production took a hit when the Honeybadger came back so he looks like the odd man out.

Tony Jefferson:

- 30 solos

- 4 assists

- 1 sack

Twenty six of Jefferson's tackles came in the first three games prior to Mathieu coming back.

Deon Bucannon: Played all 5 games, highest tackle game is 6 but hasn't made any big plays just tackles.

- 25 solos

- 2 assists

His numbers are ok but he hasn't made any big plays this year but it seems from what you say that they are seeking a way to get him on the field so the thing to look for is when the Cards play a run-heavy team where they would want to have an in-the-box safety coming up in run support and then check to see who they scale back reps. At this time they haven't unleashed the Honey Badger but I think if he is healthy he has big play potential that Bucannon hasn't displayed.

We'll see but I think that the guys you want going forward are Rashad Johnson and Tyrann Mathieu. Both look like they will be solid and consistent but they also can make big plays that score IDP points.

The number I wanted to see was Mathieu with 50/51 as well. To have close to the same snaps as Jefferson is alarming. I'm beginning to get the feeling that the ARIZ defense is becoming the NE offense.......you just never know what your going to get. Week to week scheming.

Oakland only had 48 offensive plays. On 21 of those plays, Arizona ran their base 3-4 set. Tony Jefferson is in the game and Kevin Minter, too.

For 26 plays, they were in their dime set. Jefferson and Minter are replaced by Tyrann Mathieu and Deone Bucannon, and one of the front seven are replaced by Jerraud Powers, who is the slot cornerback.

Arizona Cardinals head coach gave the media an update on the health of the team after the 24-13 win over the Oakland Raiders. He told the media (via Arizona Sports) the one main injury to look at is safety Rashad Johnson. He was set to have an MRI on Monday to have his patella tendon looked at. "He's the only one in the tube today," said Arians. The team believes it is only tendinitis

I like Rashad Johnson (ARI) and am considering picking him up to play this week, but am on the fence...

note: I just picked up Barry Church (DAL) who is going against WAS this week, to place in place of Prince Amukamara (NYG) who is on bye.

I've played Johnson for the past three weeks, and his production dipped significantly last week (from 36 to 6 points), so I hope it had to do with the small snaps.

Hey, Colorado - just a heads up: Since you seem to be new, you'll want to post questions about your lineup in the Assistant Coach forum.

Unless you were just itching to tell us your weekly pick ups, in which case - duly noted. Larry keeps a running log of everyone's team and will update accordingly.

Of course his production "dipped" after a 2 INT/TD performance.

He's having issues with a tendon and at the very least will play in discomfort. I'd probably try to find a replacement.

It also dipped significantly from the previous five weeks' performance too. I will try to find a replacement. I'm thinking Reggie Nelson, Ha Ha Clinton Dix, or Reshad Jones.

DBs are going to have dips like that. I'd give him one more week, but that depends on how many you start. Nelson is more inconsistent. Burnett is third in my league in ppg, and he's had two single-digit weeks.

Burnett is my first safety, but my league requires two. I have a big game this week that could mean playoffs or not, and I'm scared to risk Nelson if his knee is banged up. What's the deal with Reshad Jones?

Eagles ran 94! offensive plays yesterday...that is silly. Here are the snaps:

Johnson 94

Mathieu 78

Bucannon 78

Jefferson 75

Snaps were likely aided by Peterson getting injured. Powers moved from the slot to outside, and Mathieu primarily was playing slot corner.

Additionally:

Tony Jefferson - DB - Cardinals
Cardinals SS Tony Jefferson is in the league's concussion protocol.
Jefferson has started five games this season, including three of the past four. Tyrann Mathieu should see the biggest increase in snaps in Jefferson's absence.
