QB Mike Glennon, NYG (1 Viewer)

Made all the more impressive knowing they could not run the ball. He was able to still complete passes and move the chains as a one dimensional offense yesterday.

Coach Greg Schiano calls Mike Glennon someone he'd like to have as his quarterback for a "long time."

"If he stays on this trajectory, he's a guy you'd like to have as your quarterback for a long time," was Schiano's full quote. Glennon hasn't been a box-score world beater, but has done everything the Bucs have asked of him and more, managing the game and popping big plays when needed. He's certainly an improvement over Josh Freeman. Glennon is the favorite to be under center in Tampa Bay in 2014, but that could change if Schiano is fired. The Bucs are going to be in position to select a franchise quarterback in May's draft.

At this point I think the Bucs stay with Glennon in 2014 and go a different direction in the first round. I personally don't like any QB in this draft better than a 2nd year Glennon. There isn't an RG3 or Luck in this draft, so Bucs should just stay with Glennon. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they target a 2nd-4th round backup QB.

 
Miserable few weeks for him. Luckily for him though the Bucs are playing themselves out of draft position.

I know he lacked weapons, but the combination of 59.3% completion percentage and 6.2 YPA is pretty bad. Can anyone name a QB who put up numbers like that in a large first season sample size who went on to be a good NFL QB?

What dynasty value? Does anyone have him ranked in the top 30 dynasty QBs right now? If so, they shouldn't.

Slightly lower completion percentage, slightly higher YPA.

Pretty good example. Is that it, one guy has had similar numbers as a rookie and gone on to be great, and that one guy happens to be in the discussion for being the best QB of all time? I think it's pretty safe to say Glennon won't follow that career arc.

Bucs coach Lovie Smith praised Mike Glennon's "strong arm and pocket presence" at Lovie's introductory press conference Monday.

Although Glennon was easily the NFL's best rookie quarterback during the 2013 season, questions remain whether he's a long-term solution for the Bucs. Glennon just turned 24 in December. He finished his first year with a 59.4 completion rate, 19:9 TD-to-INT ratio, and 6.3 yards-per-attempt average. In all likelihood, Glennon will have to "compete" for a starting job in 2014 training camp, though he's likely to enter as the clear favorite.

Tedford, Frazier share visions for Bucs schemes

Tedford’s first impression of Glennon was positive, as well, and while he isn’t ready to ordain him as the Bucs’ starter for 2014, it is obvious he sees some staring-caliber qualities in the rookie.

“I think he’s got a lot of poise in the pocket,’’ said Tedford, a 25-year coaching veteran who is making the jump from the college ranks to the NFL for the first time in his career. “And he doesn’t get frustrated in the pocket. He’s pretty smart with the football. When things aren’t there, he’ll throw the ball away and he makes good decisions. And good decisions come in many forms, whether you’re trying to complete a pass, throw the football away, manage the clock, whatever it may be. “Physically he brings some real positives, but I also think there are some things he can improve on, and I think he realizes that. I think he understands what his limitations are and that we can improve on that in the weight room with strength and conditioning. And I think there are some quarterback fundamentals that we can help him with.”

Glennon replaced Josh Freeman as the starter in Week 4 and went on to complete 247 of 416 passes (59 percent) for 2,068 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

A third-round draft pick out of North Carolina State, Glennon produced an 83.9 passer rating that was the best among all rookie quarterbacks last year, though some think he’ll be limited in the future by a lack of athleticism.

Tedford isn’t so sure. He has developed six quarterbacks who were selected in the first round of the NFL draft and thinks Glennon has the ability to get out of the pocket and change the launch point of his throws.

“You don’t want to be a sitting duck in one spot all the time,’’ Tedford said.

Tedford saw evidence Glennon was a leader in the locker room and the huddle.

“When you’re a rookie, a backup and then you move into that (starter’s) role, it’s hard to grab the reins and do that,” Tedford said. “But my understanding is he’s a very well-respected guy in the locker room and I think that will continue to get better. The more you do it, the more you feel this is you’re team and the more leadership you can provide.’’

Top 30? Easily. Top 20 IMO. Probably never more than FF backup, but I think he keeps the job and does alright with it.

Top 30? Easily. Top 20 IMO. Probably never more than FF backup, but I think he keeps the job and does alright with it.

Just checked the FBG dynasty rankings. Consensus of several rankings updated within the past 4 weeks has Glennon at QB #26. But I personally value the rankings of Bloom and Harstad the most among that group, and they have him at #30 and #29, respectively.

Coach Lovie Smith said he would consider drafting a quarterback at No. 7 overall.
Smith has not gone overboard with praise of Mike Glennon since arriving in Tampa. "Mike did some good things. But he did some good things as a rookie," Lovie said. "To say right now that Mike is the answer and he's our quarterback of the future and we're going to build around him and give him a 20-year contract right now, you're not there." The coach went on to say that if a player he considers a franchise quarterback is available at No. 7, he'd give a lot of thought to pulling the trigger.

Bucs not naming Mike Glennon starter

Though Mike Glennon ended the year as Tampa Bay's starting quarterback, new general manager Jason Licht is not ready to give him the starting quarterback job.

“New coach, new regime, you can’t just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter," Licht said, via the Tampa Tribune. "You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody. So, that’s what we’ll be looking for."

Licht added that the Buccaneers will look for a veteran quarterback to add to the roster.

In 13 games, Glennon completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith gushed about quarterback Mike Glennon at his introductory press conference in early January.

Not long after, new general manager Jason Licht offered further praise for the 2013 third-round draft pick.

It has become evident since then, however, that the new Bucs regime isn't quite sold on Glennon as the long-term solution.

"To say right now that Mike is the answer and he's our quarterback of the future and we're going to build around him and give him a 20-year contract, we're not there," Smith said recently, via The Tampa Tribune. "I like him as one of our quarterbacks right now, but we're going to have at least four in camp and at least one (veteran) will be in the mix. And then you just let it all play out."

Smith had previously stated the Bucs will consider a quarterback at No. 7 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft if there is a franchise-caliber signal caller available.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported just days ago that Josh McCown and Shaun Hill are realistic options in the veteran role that Smith referenced.

Whether it's McCown, Hill or a highly touted rookie, Glennon will have stiff competition for the starting job in 2014.

Did we all jump the gun on Glennon's accelerated development last November? We'll have a better answer if he's still QB1 on the depth chart coming out of training camp.

Bucs agreed to terms with QB Josh McCown, formerly of the Bears, on a two-year, $10 million deal.
McCown is leaving quarterback whisperer Marc Trestman behind for a chance to compete for a starting job. New Bucs coach Lovie Smith has never been one for young players, and will likely give McCown every opportunity to unseat Mike Glennon. McCown's play as a 34-year-old journeyman was one of the best stories of the 2013 season, but a feat he's going to have major trouble repeating without Trestman's guiding hand. New Bucs OC Jeff Tedford is a quarterback guru in his own right, but has never coached at the NFL level. McCown is worth rooting for, but there's major bust potential here.

right, we'll see. Glennon was a Schiano man, and reports out of Tampa are saying Lovie wants to do a face lift. Conservatively at least a 50% or more roster turnover. I wouldn't be surprised to see him cut or buried as the 3rd QB.

There isn't going to be any competition with second-year pro Mike Glennon. Turning the keys over to a 34-year-old journeyman who's made seven starts since 2007 isn't exactly an orthodox move, but the Bucs are going all in on 2014. Smith has never had much patience for young players, and Glennon cratered down the stretch as a rookie after getting off to a promising start. There's still a high-percentage chance Glennon makes starts this season, however.

This offseason just keeps getting better and better.

Josh has never been a starter material, and Mike showed he can do pretty good. Sooo TB running 600 times this year?

New Bucs coach Lovie Smith made it clear the first time he was asked that Josh McCown was his starting quarterback.

But the guy he replaced said he still thinks he has a chance to compete.

Last year’s starter, Mike Glennon, said he appreciates Smith being up-front but isn’t going to back down.

“He just said, ‘to start out, there’s got to be a person to start that goes out with the first group first and that person is Josh,”’ Glennon said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “Lovie said to me and to the team yesterday the best players are going to play. And I don’t think that’s any different for the quarterback position.”

They’re so adorable when they’re young.

McCown was given a $10 million contract for a reason, and it wasn’t to push the third-round pick who posted a 4-9 record playing for a shipwreck of a team.

The 34-year-old McCown is a proven commodity to Smith, and will be able to help him stabilize one position while he brings a new philosophy to Tampa.

Glennon’s not without promise, as he played acceptably well at times last year. But he hasn’t played well enough or long enough to convince many that he should be starting over McCown.

Really liked Glennon last year - was surprised they picked up McCown - even more shocking is that some people think they will select a QB - high.

But it's on Glennon. If he is as good as some of us think - he will outplay others and earn the starting gig.

NO excuses.
