Ryan Mallett (1 Viewer)

The window for guys like Mallet are extremely small to make it as a successful NFL starting qb. He has to capitalize on opportunities like last night to have any chance of amounting to anything. You would expect more from a player in his position or at least signs that he is 'getting it.' However he is proving that so far he is flopping. People defending him are using the pre season angle while failing to realize that this is Mallet's regular season. He won't get regular season snaps. Mallet knows this, the Patriots know this and yet Mallet is failing in his regular season. He is proving that he may not even be an average NFL back up at this rate.
It has nothing to do with the pre-season; it has to do with the sample size. I cannot dispute that, in Mallet's third year, he should have shown well in game action, better than he did. But, he only played 3 series, not remotely enough to make a judgment. You may as well dismiss a hitter in baseball because because he averaged .130 in the first 2 weeks of the season.

three series is more than some/many ever get

They are only stat lines but funny how bridgewater Is getting a pat on the back for his performance of 6/13 for 49 yards and mallet gets lambasted for his 5/12 for 55 yard performance. Preseason. :eyeroll:

Considering he did it in his first NFL game and Mallett is in his 4th season I'd say it makes sense.

We simply have no idea what he is capable of. I didn't buy the draft ransom trade talk, but I don't have a strong feeling either way.

Making career pronouncements on a gut with no regular season action? Braver man than me.
Like I posted earlier:

Show me one QB who spent 4 years on the bench and went on to success as a free agent.

I own him in 1 league, 24 man roster. Ready to drop him for Osweiler or Garoppolo. Kid just doesn't fit the quick-hitting scheme. Needs to be in a vertical scheme. Would love for Arians or Whisenhunt to get a hold of him.

Baseball analogy is a poor one and does not fit here.

Mallet has 3 other pre season to show case and he needs to play lights out. As of right now he is on the verge of being passed by a rookie in the pecking order who was drafted in the 2nd round.

I didn't see the game but Boston sports radio was crushing on mallett this a.m. even predicting he won't make the roster.

Let's be realistic here. It was 12 throws. The media is hungry for stories.

i really don't think him sucking is any more of a story than him playing well.

Let's be realistic - nobody wanted him enough to trade for him. And as I've posted already: no QB who spent 4 years on the bench has ever been successful after signing as a free agent.

It was 12 throws because he could not complete passes or keep drives going. He should/could have had 20 plus attempts in his show case to be traded but came up empty. Like I said the window is small for guys like Mallet to have any sort of chance of starting. At best what would anyone give for a guy like him? Late pick at best and even then you are going to need other alternatives as you don't know what you have with him.

In defense of Mallett he also had a horrible supporting cast on the field with him. The O-Line didn't provide any room for the running backs and on the passing attempts he was getting swarmed. It also seemed like every time he completed a pass there was a penalty that negated it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a strong supporter of Mallett as he seems to be great at throwing the ball straight in to the dirt, but I would like to get a chance to see him with the starters.

He had two completions for a first down on third downs called back from penalties and those were the drive killers. I watched every snap of Mallett and it was nothing to write home about but it is certainly not as bad as the media and some people are saying. He hit the dirt on an easy pass and he also soared it over a receiver as well, but he also threw some passes right on the money with a lot of zip on them.

I've never said he's horrible - he just not a starting NFL QB.

Rich Gannon?
He took over for Wade Wilson in his 4th year and didn't leave as a free agent (re-signed in his 5th year, 1991, and then was traded to the Redskins in 1993). Very good example though.

Much different era practice time wise than today

I'm not going to make a statement about his career, but I will say that as a Patriots fan, he has never impressed me. Sure, he's only really played in pre-season, but it's four years now, over a dozen games. He's never looked anything but mediocre and I've never bought into the idea that the Patriots were going to get anything for him. The idea that another team is going to bring him in with the thought that he is their starting quarterback seems baseless to me. The best thing he can hope for next year is that he gets signed to a team that has drafted a rookie, and views him as a seat-warmer, and maybe he can exceed those expectations.

Same. I kept him on my roster year after year in the hope he would develop and someone would trade for him. Once the QB desperate Texans passed on him that was all I needed to know. You may be right that he gets a chance like Flynn did but he'll probably be outplayed by a rookie like he did.

I would bet money he is better than Ryan Fitzpatrick right now.
Apparently the Texans disagree and thought a 4th round pick was better spent on Tom Savage than Mallett.
It seems just as apparent that NE didn't want to go into the season with Garoppolo as the backup to the aging Brady. We don't know the terms of any trade talks, if indeed there were serious trade talks or why a potential trade was not made.

Fitzpatrick can at least move. If Mallet changed from #16 to #11 I would think I was watching my boyhood hero come back to life under center.

Who said anything about Savage? I think Savage will be better than Fitzpatrick too. So I guess we are in agreement that they are both better than Fitzpatrick.
That wasn't my point - they drafted Savage instead of trading the 4th+ for Mallett.

How do you know the Patriots wanted to take a 4th round pick for Mallet? After all, they spent a 2nd to get him.

It was a 3rd and they got 2 years as a backup out of him. The Texans 4th could have been Dakota Dozier who is much better than the guard they drafted in the 6th (Jon Halapio).

Unless you have more information than me, we really have no idea what the Texans were willing to give, or what the Patriots were willing to take. So I don't understand how you draw your conclusion. The Patriots may have wanted a 1st for Mallett, which becomes the Texans preferring to spend a 4th on Savage over a 1st for Mallet.

FOXBORO, Mass. — New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett was conspicuously absent from training camp practice on Sunday after a poor performance in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Washington Redskins. Mallett spent time checking his left knee on Thursday night after sliding on his knee brace. The second-string QB said he was fine after the game.Read more at: http://nesn.com/2014/08/ryan-mallett-misses-patriots-training-camp-practice-for-undisclosed-reason/

I think Mallet is the surprise cut and not Ridley
Not in relation to Ridley, but I would imagine Mallet being cut is a distinct possibility at this point... or a trade for a conditional late pick. I'd be very surprised to see Mallet on the Pats come week 1.

ETA -- Houston has no incentive to pay anything for Mallet as they're sitting on the top waiver priority (as pointed out across twitter today). If the Pats cut him, O'Brien and Co can have him if they want him.

For as much credit as BB gets for managing his roster (and rightfully so), it sure feels like they may have overplayed their hand with Mallet.

Jake Delhomme. But that was technically 6 years on the bench so it doesn't quite meet your criteria.
Rich Gannon was drafted in 1997, and while he started a number of games in 1990 and 1991, he formally became the starting QB for the Vikings in 1992. Not exactly the criteria as defined, but close enough.

Gannon's success as a free agent didn't come until later in his career, of course - so he isn't the best example of what you were looking for.

I don't think that Mallett will replicate what Gannon did with his career.

Doug Flutie was a benchwarmer for most of his first 4 seasons in the NFL before going to the CFL and becoming a star and eventually finding success in the NFL.

Steve Bono was a journeyman backup for 9 years before signing with Kansas City and subsequently making the Pro Bowl.

Trent Green was a 3rd-stringer for 4 years before signing with St. Louis as a free agent and eventually making 2 Pro Bowls.

George Blanda was primarily a kicker for the first 11 seasons of his career, before he signed with the Houston Oilers and made 4 Pro Bowls and the Hall Of Fame.

Ryan Mallett - QB - Texans

Texans acquired QB Ryan Mallett from the Patriots.

Return compensation is unclear, but it's likely a mid- to late-round round pick. Seemingly on the block since the first day he arrived in New England in 2011, Mallett has been heavily connected to the Texans since they named former Pats OC Bill O'Brien head coach. Mallett adds more depth to the Texans' uninspiring trio of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and Tom Savage, but isn't an obvious upgrade. His acquisition should mean Keenum is sent packing. Despite his inexplicable name recognition, we wouldn't count on Mallett starting any games. He's attempted only four regular-season passes, and has never stood out in exhibition action.
