THE Metro-Detroit Thread (1 Viewer)

Da Guru

Fair & Balanced
With all the guys from the Metro-Area here we should have a thread about anything good or bad going on in the area. Things to do,places to eat..whatever.

Went out last night with four couples and saw this band at TC Gators in Canton. If you like live music these guys are the best band I have heard in years. They can do everything from Guns&Roses to Johnny Cash, to Queen, Aerosmith, Barry White..you name it they cover everything, great vocals from every member. If you want to take the wife or girlfriend out for some drinks and hear some great music check these guys out.

Last weekend I took Ben to the Fox Theatre to see Sesame Street Live. It was one of the best monster band performances I've ever seen. They played a great mix of their old stuff as well their new, which I appreciated. I mean the younger fans of course are going to want to hear Elmo's World and Abby's Flying Fairie School, but the fans that have been around for a while got a chance to rock out old skool with classics like Rubber Duckie and C Is For Cookie. The whole band was top notch, but in my opinion Ernie stole the show. He had several solos, and his rendition of I Don't Want To Live On The Moon was simply off the charts. Pretty sure the tour has left Detroit, but I would highly recommend catching their show next time they are in town. This band has held up easily as good as other hall of fame bands like Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones.

Remember what an idiot you were in the Sandusky thread when you were basically defending Penn State's actions? Well...you're doing it again.

If you guys are ever downriver checkout my buddies band. Routinely plays at Simons in Allen park and at busters in Trenton. Called train wreck

Also, the 3rd friday of the month Wyandotte has all their art galleries and shops stay open really late. Pretty good pub crawl down biddle.

oh do tell.. defending what? I'm not getting to go into my views on the subject AGAIN, but is is safe to say I never defended Paterno or anything related to the scandal.. I will assume an honest mistake on your end and that you have me confused with someone else..

Bada Bing, WOW they have the best girl on girl shows, ky wrestling, more porn stars as special guests of any club ever, and the midget strippers are a Detroit highlight. Don't miss Bada Bing :excited:

My son is good friends with the son of the owner of Gators...i may actually be heading there tonight. :banned: I do know that band is very well-liked in the area. They are very talented, polished, etc. but I think they kinda take themselves a little more seriously than a band playing at a chicken wing joint should. I saw another band at Gators recently that i thought was more fun, they were call Scoop McGoo or something like that. Cant miss with either one though, the chicks dig them...

Some coworkers of mine used to hit a place called Silky's in Dearborn to see Fifty Amp Fuse. Not sure if they still play there or not.

Wow, Simon's. Used to road trip down there to catch the Killer Flamingos back in the mid-90's.

Clipped a guard rail on the Southfield Freeway after leaving Simons one night. That place used to hop when the Flamingos played there.

still there, in the 90's I could walk there from my first house. good times.

Had a little get together last night and grilled some burgers. If anyone is grilling The Picnic Basket has some great fresh pre-made burgers. The butcher makes his own blend. Just the perfect amount of fat for great flavor. Everybody was raving about how good they were. For those in the Plymouth-Canton-Northville area check this place out. Great chili as well.

Anyone in this area needs to go to Miller's Bar on Michigan Avenue just east of Telegraph in Dearborn. They have the best burgers I have ever eaten.

They are ok. Too pricey and sort of touristy now. I like Mason's in Livonia for burgers or the redcoat tavern in royal oak/west bloomfield. Also Vivio's in farmer's mkt has great burgers.

I like Redcoat, but don't get the love for their burgers. It is a very good burger, but nothing very unique. To me, Millers is the best, although I didnt like some of the changes they have made, very touristy with the addition of a tv and a board with regular specials...next thing you know, they will be giving customers menus and grilling the onions if you want.

It may be touristy now but they still have the exact same bugers that they have had forever. They are dam good. RedCoat had really good bugers as well..have not been there in years but it seems they were cooked on an open flame and a little more charred than Millers.

That was fine in the early 90's but now they've been passed up.

A good burger is a good burger. I have a Miller burger maybe one a year and always enjoy it.

Wow...Just about the most amazing lightning storm this morning. I've never seen so many different patterns of lightning. Lots of flooding on the hwys this morning.

Kicked the crap outta the man-made fireworks after the game last night.

Will be in Detroit for a couple of days in early August with my family (boys 12 and 9) on a baseball stadium road trip.

Plan on seeing the Tigers (duh), but looking for other things to do.

Suggestions appreciated - one thing we'd like to do is just hit a beach one day. Someone mentioned the town of Belleville, or maybe Belle Isle?

TIA

For a beach try a Huron-Clinton Metro Park...they are going to be hard to beat.http://www.metroparks.com/

I'd also suggest Slows BBQ before the Tigers game...just a block or so away from the site of old Tiger Stadium. The also run a shuttle to the games I believe.

If you have the time, I would also suggest a day at the Henry Ford/Greenfield Village...lots of history there

Thanks  Which of those Metroparks do you suggest? Seems to be a bunch of them.

Yes, we've targeted the Ford village as a definite.

We are staying near the airport, but flexible with a car. Even if have to leave the city proper is fine.

I'm downtown Detroit all week. Lot of boarded up buildings.

Lafayette or the other one? Going to try them out today.

From where you are staying, I'd suggest Kensington. Great beach with a water slide attached. If you get bored of there, head across the highway to Island Lake Rec. Spring Mill Pond has a nice small beach and Kent Lake beach is much bigger. If you want to drive a bit further, Stony is my favorite of the parks. Water quality at Lake St Clair (MetroBeach) is always an issue. I was out on Lake St Clair yesterday in a kayak and close to shore was a bit nasty.

You're going to be closest to the Lower-Huron Metropark http://www.metroparks.com/metroparks/parks/index_all.aspx?ID=8&r=0they have a great Aquatic Center at that one, so things for the whole family (splash pad, lazy river, etc.).

Kensingston is nice if you need that beach element, but that's a bit of a haul from the Airport area (20-25 miles?). Lower Huron is much much closer and they have that great aquatic center:http://www.michigan....l.aspx?p=B14377

I forget the actual name of the metropark, but the one out by the airport has a waterpark called turtle cove, very good for the kids. Its on haggerty road off of 1-94 in belleville.

detroit has 3 casinos. and there is 1 across the border in windsor.

however I went to the new hollywood casino in toledo ohio and it is very nice and the poker room is huge. plus NO smoking inside, unlike the detroit ones.

You don't want to go to Bell Isle, it used to be spectacular, but there is a pretty rough crowd that hangs there now, also lots of trash everywhere. I can't comment on any local beaches, but ny memories of them aren't that fond, especially considering how amazing so many other Michigan beaches are . The Henry Ford/Greenfield Village is a must. Slows is a great option before the game, just get there early as it is always packed.

You know, I’ve probably driven past this place a thousand times and never knew what exactly it was. I will definitely check this out. The weird thing is, I couldn’t find anything on their website that mentioned the burgers… am I just completely missing it?Unfortunately, my typical entertainment is more in line with goonsquad’s Sesame Street post than the real fun stuff, so I can’t contribute much there. I can confirm that the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village are great. The HF has the Titanic exhibit running through September, and it is extremely well done. Definitely worth seeing. As far as food, for those in the Plymouth-Canton-Northville area: I did try the new Real BBQ place in Canton recently (http://www.realbarbq.com/canton/ ). I wasn’t blown away. I didn’t hate it, I just didn’t think it tasted all that great. I’m willing to try it again, but want to give them a little time to work the kinks out.
