Help pick TV and Sound...thanks (1 Viewer)

If you have input on better, but similarly priced, options, please let me know what they are.

Thanks for any and all input.

If the 55" LG is good I would keep it and spend more to upgrade to decent surround sound.

3C's, what would you recommend?
I haven't really kept up with the latest and greatest and I'm sure plenty here will have opinions. In my case, when I was searching, I bought an Onkyo receiver, Ascend Acoustics speakers and Hsu sub. Excellent sound.

Would be better without the mobile links. Personally I prefer plasmas but they are dead :kicksrock: Of the TVs you listed I would lean Samsung, they are really the premiere LCD mfg right now.

Do not get the Bose, Bose isn't worth any money IMO. For the sound I would go with any of the Onkyos or the Yamaha, they will be reasonably good. I am partial to Denon and this should be a decent sounding package for the price Link but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them to be honest.

240 htz is a waste of money. you will probably just disable the "soap opera" feature anyway.
I have noticed a 'shaking' while watching sports. A football, golfball, etc shakes a bit on my Vizio with 120Hz. Would a higher hertz get rid of that?

Anyone else willing to look?

The vizio has a nice picture but is only 120...the 65s are 240 htz...
I'm of the opinion that there's very few things you can watch where 120 vs 240 is any difference, and then it is so small it's not worth extra money. Go for the 120 if it has all the other features you want.

it isn;t just that there is no difference...it is that you will neuter the 240 capability if you turn off the "soap opera" picture setting. Which I have to think most people do as regular tv is unwatchable with that setting on.

I meant leaving it on for action movies or sporting events -- very little discernible difference between 120 and 240

agree with this too. wish I would have passed on the 240 for my theatre room tv. waste of money.

I will definitely turn off the "soap opera effect". Can't stand it.

Then don't bother with a 240Hz TV, waste of money then.

Do NOT go with the Onkyo receiver.

They have a known issue with using bad HDMI boards.

I have a 3 yr old Onkyo TX-NR609 that I am now having to send away to get my HDMI board replaced. Working one day, no sound the next and all inputs are toast.

https://www.avforums.com/threads/onkyo-tx-nr609-suddenly-no-sound.1835817/
I thought they got that fixed with the newer models? I had the 809 and no issues with it but replaced it not long after I got it since I upgraded my speakers and the Onkyo wasn't a good match for them.

With mine they offered to either fix it or give $125 towards one of a few specified Onkyo receiver. Here is one of the options

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR636-7-2-Ch-Network-Receiver/product-reviews/B00IQ0SE22/ref=cm_cr_dp_qt_hist_one?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0

Check out the 1-star reviews.

Another option had some bad reviews also

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR535-5-2-Channel-Network-Receiver/dp/B00IQ0SDVY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1416926194&sr=1-1&keywords=onkyo+535

Maybe they've fixed teh production issue but I'm sorry I made the choice before.

I'm on my second Onkyo (original followed by an upgrade to a newer model). No issues but I keep mine well ventilated. Heat certainly could be an issue.

Ascend is having a "sale" in case you were interested. http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/showthread.php?5861-Thanksgiving-Black-Friday-Holiday-Sales!

If you were interested and wanted to go a little lower cost those speakers from Wave Crest could be an option. <$500 for your 5 speakers in a 5.1 setup and the reviews look good. Designed by Ascend for a startup company (IT geek). Get a good budget sub and you're less than $1000 in for all but the receiver.
Lot of options if he wants to increase his budget to around 3-3500, which is what he would need to do to move into better speakers.

Jamo are nice speakers but that's way outside of his 2k budget for TV and audio.
Got them at a big discount from a friend who installs stereos. Didn't realize they were that expensive at regular price.

Ascend are great speakers that don't charge a premium like some others. Wave is a "budget" option.

Don't dispute that but even with those Wave speakers 474 for 5, plus a sub puts you at 600. Add in 250 for a receiver and you're at 850. That will push him beyond his 2k budget.

Just looking on Amazon right now the Energy Take 5 Classic is on sale for 299.99 which is a great deal, add in a receiver like this Yamaha or this Yamaha that has Airplay and you are at 480 or 650 respectively. Leaving almost 1500 for the TV.

That option is much better than the all in ones the OP posted.

Sure, and I think he's convinced on buying a TV. My premise was to stick with the current TV and get a decent surround system/speakers. I would think a 55" LG is fairly decent. But if he's going new TV as well that (your link) would certainly be an option.

Tonight at Best Buy I saw some Klipsch Quintet speakers for 274...would have to add a sub...they had a Polk s108 on sell for 99.99 that had good reviews. Thoughts? Experience?

I think Iay wait on TV until they start closing out 2014 models in Feb and March.

Klipsch are good but you have to like horn tweeters, which I personally don't care for.

Can you explain?
They have a horn tweeter, most speakers have dome tweeters. Horn speakers are typically a lot brighter sounding meaning they accentuate the high frequencies of the sound more than a dome tweeter.
