hello ladies (1 Viewer)

Haven't seen it but looking forward to it. I just hope the show lives up to my mental image of watching Merchant attempt to pick up chicks.

I just finished watching the first episode. I thought it was great.

You can really feel Merchant's writing come through similar to Extras and The Office.

enjoyed the second episode. I did not laugh out loud as much as the first but still really liked it.

I assume everyone in this thread has seen Extras and the British original version of The Office? If not, make sure you watch them. Very similar "awkward" humor that Merchant had a big hand in writing (he also has an fantastic small role in Extras as an actor).

For that matter, see Life's Too Short.

Thanks. I have to torrent this. It was only 1 season if memory serves.

Only one season with a special series finale at the end. Shame it didn't get renewed for a second season.

Great thanks. I grabbed this online along with Derek.

Loved Extras, The Office and Life's Too Short.

This one didn't do it for me though.

Not in.

I've been a little disappointed (as I was in Life is Short before the special).

For better of worse, I think Merchant and Gervais have pretty much run the well dry on uncomfortable humor focused on unpleasantly oblivious people (and if I still have a hankering for more, I can watch Larry David). While I'm not sure Derek worked, I respected the fact that Gervais has moved on to trying to write about people trying to be fundamentally good (which is what I found refreshing in the Life Is Short special).

I've always suspected that Merchant is actually the wittier half of the Gervais/Merchant team. While Ricky generally just cackes at whatever idiocy Carl has come up with, Steven often comes up with a good one liner. And this show does have funny lines. But I don't find Merchant's character compelling because I'm bored of comedies centering on people who behave like #######s. I realize I'm supposed to understand that the character means well and is acting that way because he thinks that's what he has to do, but it just isn't very funny to me to watch him treat his one true friend like #### (particularly since Extras already went there).

I watched episode 3 and enjoyed it. Not falling in love with it by any means but I will keep watching.

One thing that is likely to continue to bother me is the direct comparison to Extras because his friend is a struggling actress. The scenes between Jessica and her snotty friend were almost identical to Andy Millman and his snotty friend Greg.

The limo bit out front of the club was hilarious. Agree that it is a recycled Merchant/Gervais shtick, but that is still 1000 X better than any comedy on network tv.

his physical comedy is top notch. When he was sprinting after the limo, I was rolling. I thought he was going to snap like a twig.
