My wife and I were at the grocery store. We had just arrived and were in the produce section. Out of the corner of my eye i see a woman pushing her children in a cart and hear her talking to her children who are asking for strawberries. The two children are about 3-4 years old and both are standing in the cart. The woman begins to respond saying what the child sees are not strawberries (she has stepped away from the cart to look at fruit) and then a loud crash followed by two children wailing. One or both of the children had been reaching out of the cart, too much weight went to one side and the cart tipped over. One of the children was bleeding from the head and I'm guessing he or she hit their head on the fruit stand on their way down (or I guess they could have smacked their head on the floor). The woman screams oh my god. The entire place went silent and a few people moved over quickly to see if they could assist. The woman gathered up her screaming, bleeding children and hustled them out of the store. The cart was left tipped on it's side. The whole ordeal lasted about 10 seconds from cart tipping to the woman leaving.

My wife was hysterical. She wanted to follow the woman out to make sure everything was alright. honestly I didn't know what to do. i consoled my wife, told her everything would be ok with the kids and that we should continue shopping. She said she had lost her appetite and wanted to go home. I joked i'd make her stand in the cart if she didn't relax. That did not go over well and she left the store. I had my heart set on Fritos so i picked up a bag before I left. We stopped for chicken on the way home.

My question: is what the woman did considered child endangerment? letting her kids stand in the cart like that and then leaving the cart? I felt more angry than anything. I have no idea as to the extent of the children's injuries but if they had broken bones or needed stitches should that woman be at least reprimanded by child services? My wife could not help but think of the children and called it an accident. I could not help but think the mother was an idiot and it should have never happened. I told my wife it is people like that woman who end up suing the grocery store and that's why eggs cost double what they used to. I don't remember ever letting children stand up in a grocery cart. isn't that common sense to not allow that or the woman just took her eye off the ball for a second and that happens from time to time.

I think they should stone her to death.

To add: There was no malicous intent or negligence. People make mistakes(really it happens all the time), hopefully she learns from it.

If I was guilty of child endangerment every time my stupid kids did something stupid, I would be locked away for life

My wife would have said "Oh well, that's what you get for not watching your kids" and kept on shopping.

its child endangerment on some level but not to the point where anything should happen to the mother. Sometimes kids are going to be kids and mishaps like that make them stronger.

Half this ordeal could have been avoided had you taken the sensible approach to never grocery shop with your wife.

The obvious mistake here was two kids under 4 years old. Someone should show this terrible woman the family planning aisle.

amirite?

This.
The kids are to blame?
No one is to blame. Sometimes kids do stupid stuff they dont know is dangerous and parents can't be expected to keep their eyes on them 100% of the time. Sometimes this results in injuries. the kids will learn.
What did the kids do other than be placed in a cart? There's like a picture right on the cart that says don't let kids stand in the cart. I don't understand how anyone could say the kids did something stupid.

You need to get perpective on life, seriously.

If this is the worst thing you ever saw and you want to call child services, you lead a sheltered life.

The reason they tell you not to stand in the cart would be that it is stupid to do so.

So you are saying the kids are applying to Mensa by leaning out of the cart?

What is wrong with your wife.. if that freaked her out, I'd hate to see what happened if she walked into a scene with a car wreck w/ injuries or something

Maybe I shouldn't have written that. I assumed they reached or leaned out of the cart. All i know is the cart tipped over and the kids went flying. Maybe they both just moved to the side of the cart to watch mom who had just turned their back on them to look at plums or whatever fruit it was.

:lmao:

As long as the mom took the kids to the hospital (or urgent care), she is fine here. Sure, it isn't the smartest idea to put the kids in the cart, but it's not life threatening.

Mom learns a lesson, kids learn a lesson, and as long as their is no skull fracture or brain bleed the kids will be fine.
