*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (3 Viewers)

Didn't think the Rockets would get an worthwhile offer for him, but odds are slim they'll be able to deal Asik for much other than giving him away before the deadline. Has as much value to Rockets as he would for most teams. The team that acquires him still must pay him the $15 mil next (even if that full amount doesn't count against the cap). Poison pill is great for signing guys away. Not so much for trying to rid of them.

Too many more versatile options available with expirings (Gasol/Hawes). Another with similar skill set and expiring in Kaman. Varejao is more versatile and has a $4 mil buyout (if acquiring team decides to go elsewhere next year) and Brandon Bass ($6.9 mil). And are also players that have played this season.

Asik would have had a lot more value if this were the 90's/early-mid 2000s. He's a good man-2-man block defender (he's not a versatile rim protector). In a league where low post big men are close to extinct. And he's a guy you can just run off the court in today's NBA & render him a complete non-factor.

Love that Caveman's 2013/14 game of the year was a nationally televised Sunday afternoon tilt. He should be gone at the deadline to a contender.

Greg Monroe - F/C - Pistons

Greg Monroe is unlikely to be traded at the deadline "unless it's a blockbuster deal," according to NBA.com.
The Pistons really struck out on signing Josh Smith in the offseason and he's not a small forward whatsoever. The team will have to move some parts around and Monroe being dealt would make the most sense. Still, it doesn't sound like this deal will go down for just draft picks.

Man. The rockets shoot a ton of threes.
When they shoot 40%, they have a good chance of winning. If Howard weren't one of the worst ball handlers in the NBA, the Rockets would shoot even more threes. I don't think this is a winning formula in the payoffs.

Team that can't shoot nor play defense, not a good combo.

I've read some articles stating Evan Turner is gonna get a good contract (based off this year #s). If that's the case, boy, some team is gonna regret it. Particularly if good money is something like OJ Mayo got.

I looked these two guys up a few days ago - Turner is shooting the ball a little worse than Mayo did in his walk year, but they are roughly comparable. I'd guess Turner gets maybe a 2 year, 12m deal. I wouldn't want to give it to him, but that seems to be the market for that type of guy.

It only takes one fool. Some teams can't attract free agents without overpaying.

I see, Grizzlies. Averaging like 35 mpg in 6 games in February.
Those are the 6 games Conley has missed, and they've hung in there pretty well without him. Calathes looked amazing last night, didn't force anything, got high percentage looks, didn't make many mistakes. Although it certainly helped that John Wall didn't really bother to play defense or offense last night. Worst game of his career.

Beal looked noticeably peeved he didn't get the last shot.
They tried to get it to him, Memphis just had it defended well. They obviously knew Beal would be the first option, and Randy Wittman isn't exactly a genius when it comes to set plays out of time outs. They never get good looks. I think the last time the Wiz hit a shot to tie or win the game at the buzzer was January 2013 vs.OKC, and even there Beal was double-teamed, just made a great move.

Bulls being above .500 is impressive.
Yes, and losing Deng didn't seem to affect them much. Noah is playing very well recently including a triple-double last night. Getting Augustin has certainly helped too.
I'm shocked at how little the loss of Deng has affected the team. I still want Chicago to sell off Hinrich and Dunleavy to the highest bidders, but at this rate, might as well go for the #3 seed. If everyone stays healthy, the current team might be able to make the eastern conference finals.

Come on now. They're hanging around but their horrific offence is going to kill them. They're a .500 team if the few remaining players they have stay healthy. .

ETA: They've had the 2nd easiest schedule as well this year.

They still have the #2 Defense in the NBA. I don't expect them to beat Indy or Miami, but its not like anyone else in the East is clearly better. And I still think Thibs is a top 3 coach in the NBA.

Nobody can be more disappointed with Bennett than I am, and the pick in general at this point by former GM Grant, but some of you are acting pretty toolish about the kid. He's played better recently...he hasn't been getting all his minutes with the bench crew either. Hell, he's actually getting real minutes. Brown has never developed a draft pick that I can remember, and some have left Cleveland and had some success. The kid was coming off shoulder surgery this past Fall. He's got some nice skills, not just in the buffet line, that need to be enhanced. Certainly not asking anyone to anoint the kid, but at least act like you pay attention to the NBA.

And they have the #28 offence. IMO they're behind TOR and WAS and about even with ATL.

Cavs would be well served to tank and add one of the top 5-6 guys in the draft. Bennett should be much, much better next year and Clev should get a decent asset when they deal Waiters. Lots of young talent there that could blossom.

That is the joy of the NBA. Should these teams meet up in the playoffs, I'll take the Bulls experience over all three of those teams. Old Talent >>>>>> Young Talent.

Having 4 top 4 picks in the last 3 years isn't enough tanking? How many more years should they try to be terrible for?

To be fair, you did say that they might reach the Eastern Conference finals. That's what people questioned. Beating Toronto and Washington isn't gonna get them to the EC Finals. Barring a LeBron/Paul George injury or the biggest first round upset in NBA history they'd have to beat either Indy or Miami to get there.

Bulls are my #1 choice for Toronto to meet up with in the 1st round. Raptors in 5.

That's what I was thinking. But really, if this draft is near as strong as thought, it wouldn't hurt to tank one more. Some real nice fits at the top of the draft, for any team really.

Waiters is a very interesting discussion IMO.

Is that with or without Lowry? Link

I'd still take Chicago either way. They have a huge advantage in the front court.

I'm just getting sick of hearing that tanking is a magical cure for terrible teams.

Who was the last player drafted that turned a team into a contender? Rose? Durant?

I have a tough time seeing them dealing Lowry now. But if they did, even with Hardaway, I'd take the Raps.

I feel bad for Cleveland fans. They are in the news daily for all the wrong reasons. I don't think Deng will stay. I don't know the guy, but everything he has said/stood for indicates that he cares about winning as much if not more than money. He is getting up there in years and is probably not excited about a rebuild. Irving is rumored to want out. Waiters probably needs to go. That is your top 3 scorers.

2014 will be another step in a NEW rebuild. I think Bennett will be an ok starter, but I don't see him being #1 worth. More of a Olowokandi type pick.

Cavs currently have the 23rd best record in the NBA, with 30 games left. They aren't going to the playoffs. With the best draft since '03 on deck, it's a no brainer to tank he remaining 30 games and add one of the drafts elite talents.

Telling all their young players to intentionally lose is a great way to build for the future. Should also help them hold onto Deng.

Trade Deng. Trade Waiters. Give Bennett all the minutes he can handle the rest of the year. Tank. Add a top 4-5 guy in June to Irving. If Bennett rebounds into a semi star/solid starter, that's a nice 3 some.

I wasn't talking about Toronto's record over them. Just trying to dispel the thought that the Chicago's big are a huge advantage; especially in the two games since Toronto got rid of the Gay. It isn't pretty for the Bulls bigs.
