Echo and the Bunnymen (1 Viewer)

IMO Echo and The Bunnymen and The Church are perhaps the most underrated bands of their time/genre.

I hung out with Ian into the wee hours after a show at a small venue in Madison WI about 15 years ago. He was interested in my girlfriend and my buddy's girlfriend. We didn't mind because he kept buying rounds. Liverpool supporter, seemed a bit of a jerk but hard to say as we were all very drunk.

Love the band but the dynamic between Mac and Will Sergeant is really strange. They've been playing together for half their lives but they don't even look at each other onstage anymore. Sergeant stands stage right and consistently looks away from McCullough.

mutually inclusive, imo.

I saw them play at the old Merlyn's nightclub on State Street (above Zorba's Gyros) in 1978 :bag:

Saw them at the Warfield in SF, 1983ish.

That was a great venue. I think the show I saw was an Ian McCulloch solo show, at O'Cayz Corral on E. Wilson.

You kinda have to be a jerk to be successful in that moody genre. Not exactly a lot of peppy, no-care-in-the-world types.

in the Liverpool supporter genre? totally agree.

I always remember thinking that their lyrics were simply better than other similar bands from the same era. More poetic. Especially "The Killing Moon".

Great band.

Echo and the Bunnymen, such as they are, are touring with Violent Femmes this summer. I think I'll pass, although several friends of my generation seem interested. The Femmes are actually making decent music again these days. I saw Echo about 15 or so years ago in Madison, WI - hung out with Ian for quite a while after the show. He was drunk and hitting on my girlfriend the whole time, which was fine because we were all drinking on his tab.

They're playing the theater on the lakefront in Chicago when they come through town. While I doubt I'll go see two bands that I saw in their heyday, we're planning on being in Burnham Harbor, which is right where the theater is, on a friend's boat that night. Close enough to get a good listen.

I saw the Femmes right after they reunited a few years ago and it was surprisingly very good. They've since lost DeLorenzo, no great surprise, and I suppose one can argue about how important he is to the band. Gano and Ritchie seem pretty dedicated to making good music.

Overseas shows are with Primal Scream.  Naturally they're not coming anywhere near Florida.  Not a Femmes fan.  I remember seeing Sugarcubes, PIL, New Order, and Femmes a long time ago at Summerfest in Milwaukee.  Crowd could give a rat's ### about any of these great bands and went crazy for a mediocre Femmes band.  Such a shame.

Femmes are hometown heroes up there.

Saw Echo & The Bunnymen last year at the Regency.  Mac was in better voice than the last couple times I've seen them.  His Scouse stage banter was almost unintelligible though.

ETA: had the wrong venue :bag:

I know.  They're just not that good IMO.
Debut is still remarkably solid for being almost 35 years old. I probably went 15 years without listening to it in its entirety and was somewhat dumbfounded at how much I enjoyed giving it a listen again after all of that time.

They'll always have a soft spot in my heart.

Yeah, it had been a long time and I heard American Music the other day (not off of their debut), but it made me think of how much I liked them in my late teens.

eta* those songs still go through my head every so often.

Saw this coming a mile away.
Glad to be so predictable. :)

Still love this band.  Saw them live a few months ago and, while not as good as in their prime, they still put on a great show.  I suspect they'll blow the Femmes off the stage this summer (and I like the Femmes too---just not as good in concert the few times I've seen them, but it's been at least 10 years ago).
