Looking for a new SUV (1 Viewer)

For my wife, she likes the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and the Ford Explorer XLT

Any opinion on which is better?

I've started looking as well. I have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 with 125K...and we just had our 1st kid...I figure I'll need another car in a year or two considering I put ~30K/year on it (2-3 years I barely drove it as I was taking the train into NYC, now I drive an hour each way).

Looked at the Grand Cherokee - Man, they've come a long way on those. They price anywhere from the high 20's up to like $60K! The Diesel engine option is intriguing. No 3rd row of seats though...

My FIL has a fully-loaded Explorer. It's BIG. 3rd row of seats...all kinds of technology gadgets. Pretty nice.

I'm considering the Grand Cherokee, as well as a few others. The newly announced Land Rover Discovery Sport is essentially a repalcement for the LR2, only bigger, with a more fuel-efficient engine, and a 3rd row of seats. Tempting, but I'm not a fan of Land Rover service costs. I love the LR4, but it's so $$. Also curious how the upcoming Volvo SC90 prices out. Highlanders are very nice too...

Mid to full-size SUV's can really run the range in price from $30K - $70K+ Makes it hard to narrow sometimes.

I will throw a vote out there for an Acadia. Very very happy with it.
I had one of these for a rental when we road-tripped from New Orleans to Atlanta two years ago. It was a pretty nice car. Roomy, handled well. I liked it. I just can't get into the exterior styling.

Wife drove an Explorer and she felt it was big. Just for the heck of it, told her to drive a Durango. Loved it. Took a trip with the family and got over 25MPG. Third row, Wifi loaded for less than an equally equipped Explorer. Check the reviews. Think you'll be surprised to see it rated higher in almost every publication.

isn't the durango noticeably bigger than the Explorer?

I like the Durango, I think that's going to be my next SUV when my trailblazer dies, but it just seems odd that the explorer felt big but the durango is definitely bigger

According to Edmunds.com, the Durango is 4" longer, but the Explorer is 3" wider. Nothing too substantial, but I'd think you'd feel width more than length to a point...I had a Durango rental and I liked it. The styling on the higher-end ones is pretty sweet. It's a far cry from the Dakota-based 1st Gen Durangos.

I will say that having driven the Durango and my FIL's Explorer, I'd agree with Payne's wife that the Explorer "felt" bigger, even though numbers would say they're similar in size. Must just be the styling and how it makes the vehicle look.

I would look into the Ford Explorer with the EcoBoost engine. I have a F 150 with the EcoBoost engine and it is spectacular. Gas mileage and power when you need it.

Hyundai Santa Fe XL deserves mention. Very nice vehicle, nice finish, 300 hp, nice price. durango's are a little on the heavy side but also a good choice.

Problem with almost all of these non full size SUV's nowadays are that the towing capacity has been obliterated in favor of a "car like" ride because they aren't putting them on proper frames.

Even traditionally good SUV's like the explorer, Pathfinder, 4-Runner, and the Chevy/GM SUV's have both no v-8 option and decreased towing capacity from what they used to be.

If you have a decent size boat or haul a trailer around your options become INCREDIBLY limited.. the only decent ones are the Jeep/Dodge offerings and then you have to goto the premium models like Land Rover or VW or Mercedes or something to get a decent tow amount.

I purchased a Ford Flex about a year ago. I highly recommend it.

I know some people are put off by the so-called refrigerator on wheels look.

It personally reminds of the old woody styling.

There is a ton of room. You can get the Eco-Boost engine if you like but the Duratec V6 is more than adequate for my needs.

I got the AWD SEL version which include backup camera, automatic lift gate, BLISS blind spot system, heated seats, SYNC system, Multi-panel Vista roof, tow package and much more.

If you test drive one you will be sold.

Forgot to mention remote start.

I think I'm getting my wife one for Christmas...but I want the eccoboost engine. I have an F150 with EB engine and modded/tuned it hauls ###.

Jeep has come a long way quality-wise with these new grand Cherokees. They ride exceptionally well to boot. I know this I opinion is expected from me but wanted to chime in... Def at least test drive one.

Also looking for my wife. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with the BMW X3, Mercedes ML350, or Acura MDX? Thanks.

Those are kind of all over the place in terms of class. The X3 is a compact ute, though not as compact as the X1. ML350 is a full-size, or at least a mid-size. MDX is a full-size with a 3rd row of seats. Price wise, the ML350 is going to be considerably more most likley.

I will say that in looking at brands and such, I was impressed by Acrua's pricing. We got my wife a RDX right after the most recent re-design. It's a sharp car, and given the features, the price was really really impressive. I'd put the RDX in the same class as the X3, but we paid easily 10K less than a similarly equipped one. That said, I don't think the styling of the MDX works well. It kind of looks like a fat RDX. Just not a fan.

The X3 will likely feel very small compared to the other two, as it should. The X5 would be more of a direct comparison in terms of size. (and price with the ML350)

i just got a flex with the ecoboost and It's great.

Just bought a 2015 Tahoe to offset my tax burden for this year and love it. I also have an Acura MDX, wouldn't buy another one. If you want to go with an import I'd go either Mercedes or Lexus. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I imagine with the Ecoboost that's about the best large/comfy/go fast combo you're going to get under $50k.

I like the look on these too. But, they are pretty polarizing.

Any FJ Cruiser owners up in here?
The people that I know that have them love them.
I actually didn't know they still made these. They had CRAZY incentives on these a few years ago. I think they were like the highest dealer incentives at the time. I wonder if they lowered the MSRP or if that was just some kind of overstock? Was around the same time as the Toyota accelerator pedal thing, so maybe that was it.

I'm sorry if they still do. Close second to the Aztek for one of the ugliest vehicles ever made.

No.

They still make them, but I'm looking for used.
