Curved TVs (1 Viewer)

(HULK)

(Smash)
Thinking of buying this right now while it's $600 off: http://www.costco.com/Samsung-65%22-Class-(64.5%22-Diag.)-4K-Smart-Curved-LED-Ultra-HDTV-UN65HU7200FXZA.product.100129771.html

Its not a bad price for a 4K 65" TV. From what I've read, professional reviewers seem to think the curve is just a gimmick, while normal people reviewers seem to love the TV. All agree the picture is great, and I'm not sure I could get a better 65" 4K TV for less anyways.

What's the consensus of all the TV nerds here?

I am not a huge fan of the curved TV. I have heard nothing but great reviews from anyone that owns them. Either way, curved or not, 2,100.00 for a 65 inch 4k display made by Samsung is a good buy.

I'd buy a way cheaper tv and wait for 4k.

I buy like 1 TV a decade. My main TV is a 50 inch 720 plasma. Its time to upgrade now. If I don't get 4k, pretty sure I'll regret it in 2 years.

:lmao: I'm the same exact way. Sure I have a bunch of smaller TV's but my main tv is a 50" DLP Samsung.

That being said I was thinking of buying the same exact TV from Costco. It got good reviews. I don't know if it's a gimmick or not but it's supposed to be nice.

Ok, but you're paying for zero content that can fully utilize your tv for the next few years.
I know.

The upscaling is supposed to be better than it was in the past (in general, not just this one). Supposedly the lessons learned from upscaling to 1080 applied here and its better at it. I wouldn't really know though.

I've been looking around for a week, but I'm probably going to pick this up today unless something else catches my eye. If I do, I'll let you know how I like it.

I expect to be blown away completely as this is 15 inches bigger and the resolution smokes my 720. The only nagging thought I have is about going from plasma to LCD/LED and the black levels.

I will bet that the black levels won't be nearly as different as you think they will. LCD has made huge strides in that area over the last few years.

Enjoy the tv! Tell us if the curveness does or means anything.

My FIL has a curved tv. Its pretty cool. No complaints. Not sure if its a must have but it wouldn't deter me from buying one.

My father just bought that exact TV. It's awesome. I'm still not sure what the point of being curved is, but it looks about as good as any TV I've ever seen.

I love what I've seen in stores. If looking better than any TV I've seen is a gimmick, I'm in.

:goodposting:

As long as being curved isn't a dealbreaker this is a great deal.

Was at teh Best Buy looking at TVs for the basement recently. The curved 4K Samsung was beautiful. I did notice a lot of curved TVs in the open box special area... was wondering why so many peoples returned them.

All the people hitting their heads on the corners.

the stores could be feeding the TV a 4k source, that's why it looks so good.

Curved is stupid.

Thanks. I thought the main benefit was you got the same picture from any sitting view. Maybe not.

I usually don't start researching until I'm ready to buy.
I had read this guys review which is why I was skeptical. But as originally noted, at $2179 for a 65 inch 4K Samsung is pretty darn good. The non curved version of that TV currently costs more.

You can pick up a 60" 1080p for about $600 now. That's what I'd buy and get a bigger 4k OLED TV in a few years.

I've got a ~$300 projector showing a 150" HD picture on the basement wall and the whole family loves it. No, it's not the picture I'm seeing on these curved tvs but my gut tells me you can put that tv right next to your one that shows 3D. If you're the type who argues about how black is black, then you wouldn't like my setup but I love the huge size w good hd quality. In the spring and summer, we'll move it on out to the driveway again for the neighborhood movies at 200"+.

Curved screens were put in movie theaters because of the distortion on the screen edges as light was projected so far. Unnecessary gimmick as cstu said.

Not in the market for a TV today, but as other mentioned - if I were it would be a 55-60 inch smart non curved (likely non 4k) model for like 600 or so.

Not worth a premium IMO, but if you got the curved for less than the flat, F'n a son.... break out the :confetti:

It's beautiful.

Had to tweak the settings to get rid of the soap opera effect, but once I did that... Wow

Is that a 960 refresh rate? Is that standard on all 4k TVs?
Man I really am glad I got one of the last great plasmas
OLED is the future:

Better picture quality - Since OLEDs incorporate their own color filters, they can produce deeper blacks and a wider gamut array. The lack of a permanently-on backlight promotes higher contrast ratios (the difference between the brightest and darkest pixels on the screen). And thanks to the lack of a shutter array, OLED displays can have refresh rates that are an order magnitude faster than those of LCD/LED sets. We're talking a boost from 480 Hz to 100,000 Hz—theoretically, at least. On top of that, OLEDs offer an impressively wide viewing angle—nearing 90 degrees off center for many panels—without the color and clarity losses seen in traditional LEDs.

i spent a night a few weeks ago reading a thread on AVS about the latest OLED. I want it to be ready...it ain't there yet.

It's definitely not ready yet but in 5 years I expect us all to be buying them.

At volume, OLED TVs made with panels produced with Kateeva’s processes will cost 20% to 30% less to manufacture than LCD TVs, says Conor Madigan, president and co-founder. http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelkanellos/2015/01/13/oled-tvs-to-cost-20-30-less-than-lcds/

OLED is one of those good deals with major drawbacks. Just beware of what you're buying. Nice picture, but NEVER leave it on the same image. Pause your DVR then turn off the TV.
