There are many more conservatives in this forum than liberals (1 Viewer)

There have been several polls on this topic. Board treads slightly conservative. (Although less so on several social issues.)
Yeah not sure where the idea that these polls have shown a liberal board came from. Not as I recall it. And really on social issues I would say more libertarian than liberal. Although those two positions do align on several issues.
Link
Actually shows the results of 3 polls all of which conservatives came out on top. Nice link thanks.
But also done 6 years ago and with only 2 choices.
We have done these over and over since Ol Yeller when we were all young and carefree.. As far as I recall the liberal choice has never been the majority. In fact if you add libertarian liberal would probably come in third.
I've searched and searched but could not find a recent one we've done. I could have sworn we did one around Obamas first election. It may be time to take a pulse again. Also, if you add more choices, just about everyone claims to be some variation of socially liberal and fiscally conservative.
Liberal,Conservative,Libertarian seem like the 3 logical choices to mostly fit everyone.

I don't care who wins, just wondering how it has changed(if any)over the years.

Who cares - they are many more yoga pants posts then there were just 6 months ago. We evolve and get better. Be better tim. Be better.

Yeah it seems like we did one after the O election. I do agree with your last sentence.

I don't think polls are necessary. They may not be accurate, and in any case they don't tell us who engages in political threads which was what I was referring to. In those threads the amount of conservatives vs liberals is a much higher ratio than 55%-45%.

But if our basis is 55/45 from earlier polls, you wont see the change as well with added choices.

What's with the term "progressives"? Changing the label doesn't make it better. You're liberals.
There's been a decades long effort to make that a dirty word and its been mighty successful. We got Roved for sure.
I never use that word to describe myself. I am a Liberal and I refuse to let Frank Luntz make me call myself anything different.
Frank Luntz had nothing to do with it. I call myself progressive rather than liberal due to the fact that the term has become loaded with a different meaning than the original definition, for the reason Jackstraw noted (the use of the term as a slur by the right).
Who do you think helped the Conservative movement make it toxic? Luntz and Gingrich were at the forefront of that.

And really just call yourself what you are. People tend to judge on action and the more real world decent liberals they know the less toxic the word and association become. Where do you go when they make progressive toxic? Because that's next.
Frank Luntz didn't make the word "progressive" toxic, which was my point. The meanings of words that people describe themselves can change over time - look at minorities, blacks called themselves "colored" for years (see NAACP), Asians called themselves "oriental" but both terms became pejorative.

And if progressive becomes toxic, another term will be used.
And it will be stupider than Progressive is. And the next one will be even stupider. When you give people this kind of power over you it never ends.
So your point is that blacks should have kept calling themselves colored and Asians oriental. OK.

I don't believe so, but I wasn't around prior to the 80's to be sure.

In my 10+ years of experience around here, perception switches with who's in office. It appears more conservative when a Dem is in the White House....more liberal when a Repub is in the White House. Also in my experience, TGunz is attacked by actual liberals as much as conservatives, so there's that. You took notice of my "attacks" on TGunz in the healthcare thread, so I assume part of this thread creation is based on activity in there. It's important to remember that just because someone challenges a guy like TGunz and his over the top rhetoric doesn't automatically mean they are conservative. Take me for example.....I challenge him at just about every turn in that thread, but am for fully socialized medicine over what is in place right now. Is that a "conservative" position to take?

That's what whites called those groups, not what they called themselves.

They made that change it wasn't foisted on them by their political enemies.
Yes, because of what their political enemies meant when they used the term as opposed how they, themselves used the term - similar to liberal and progressive. And progressive wasn't foisted on liberals by Frank Luntz, it was freely chosen.

Actually it was in the 60's when Asians decided Oriental was bad. The PC police in academia picked up on it and it was gone. Same thing with colored. The Black Power movement derided colored and said call yourself what you are black. So neither of the label changes came from outside they cam from forces within. Which is the exact opposite of what has happened with the word Liberal.

No, see NAACP.

What are you guys pissed about? You stole the term "liberal" from classical liberals like me. We're the one's that should be pissed. It's like watching somebody drive off in your shiny sports car only to drive it right into a waste treatment reservoir.

The normal elements of each seem to avoid the political threads. The conservatives just look like they have the numbers because of the remorably entertaining nature of their crazy.

What if you don't fit in any of them? Because frankly I don't think I do anymore.
Yeah I get that but I was hoping with those general terns people might define themselves a bit in a post. If you'd like another term let me know I'll be glad to add it.
I don't know what term I would use anymore.

Well unfortunately Classical Liberalism or what it developed into Neo-Classical liberalism got a little to into Social Darwinism at the end of the 19th century. Libertarianism is what grew out of that movement. So you guys left us we didn't leave you.

Sold.

Tim: Did you actually do any work to find real statistics, or did you do your typical thing where you make assertions on how you "feel" and use it to justify some point you want to make?

To me it seems like posting by liberal and conservative posters is pretty even in most threads. I'd have to see some actual numbers to be legitimately swayed otherwise. It seems like that shouldn't be too difficult.

Looking at the more overtly political threads on the first few pages, I would say:

-Obamacare thread: the top posters are overwhelmingly liberals

-Voter Fraud Thread on 2nd page: pretty evenly divided

-NYC Sugary Drinks thread: pretty even

I'm not tallying anything up, but just a quick scan of the top posters seems to show that the majority of postings are split pretty evenly between conservative and liberal posters. The only outlier is overwhelmingly in the liberal direction.

So I'd say that unless you have some actual proof, it's time to shut this thing down.

Tim is like the 2000 version of Florida. The ultimate swing poster. Whichever party affiliation he decides to take in that thread will win decidedly.

Something tells me that if you listed the "liberals" of the FFA and compared it to the list tim came up with, they'd be very different....same with conservatives and those in the middle.

I see BFS, Tgunz, and Funke as the only liberals on this list. And I'm not sure if BFS is even really liberal.

I regard all the bolded as conservative. And the Commish, while not a conservative (so far as I can tell, has pretty much sided with conservatives in that specific debate.

Just for kicks, 21-30 from the Obamacare thread:

BassNBrew 177

snogger 163

Foosball God 159

Slapdash 148

BeaverCleaver 148

jonessed 137

Loan Sharks 134

Andy Dufresne 123

humpback 109

jamny 108

On review, if I were assigned to pick a single thread as supporting evidence for the OP's claim, the Obamacare thread might be the one I'd choose.

You are completely wrong about the Obamacare thread. I think you are wrong about the others too.

I regard all the bolded as conservative. And the Commish, while not a conservative (so far as I can tell, has pretty much sided with conservatives in that specific debate.
You actually keep track like that? Why? You need a hobby. When you can produce lists like that, isn't it obvious its time to find something more productive to do?

Looking at the more overtly political threads on the first few pages, I would say:

-Obamacare thread: the top posters are overwhelmingly liberals

-Voter Fraud Thread on 2nd page: pretty evenly divided

-NYC Sugary Drinks thread: pretty even

I'm not tallying anything up, but just a quick scan of the top posters seems to show that the majority of postings are split pretty evenly between conservative and liberal posters. The only outlier is overwhelmingly in the liberal direction.

So I'd say that unless you have some actual proof, it's time to shut this thing down.
Top 10 from the Obamacare thread seems evenly split ideologically to me...:Who posted in: Gov't Ineptness & Obamacare:...

Tim didn't make the list and it's actually pretty easy to do anyway.
