DFW and Austin Footballguys.... Quick Tips? (1 Viewer)

No. 16

Footballguy
Going to be heading to the area Halloween weekend and just wanted some quick tips for 4 guys in their late 20s who are always looking to party.

Friday - Flying into DAL-Fort Worth Friday Night @ 2216

Saturday - Spartan Run @ Rough Creek Lodge @ 1200

Sunday- Cowboys vs Cardinals

Mon-Wed - will be based out of Austin.

Right now our plan is to stay in DAL Friday and Saturday night. Any suggestions where to stay? Currently looking at Springhill Suites in the Downtown/West End. Looks like good value ($124/night) b/c of the free breakfast (will be handy before the Spartan Race) and room shave a fridge and microwave. Omni and Hyatt are also around the same price but they don't include a free breakfast or firdge/microwave. Not sure about their locations vs. Springhill Suites. Places downtown to check out?

Also, right now we're not planning on staying in Arlington overnight. Just heading there to catch a Cowboys game. Is it worth it to stay a night out there? Particularly Halloween weekend? Basically which has a better nightlife Dallas vs Arlington?

Then lastly any tips for things to do/check out in Austin? That's where a buddy lives so that will be our base of operations out there. I know we want to see the Hamilton Pool...other wise we have no real agenda.

TIA.

Arlington doesn't have any nightlife.

Four dudes doing a guy trip which involves running a 10 mile obstacle course race is really bizarre. Especially considering that place is well over an hour drive from Dallas.

We've had plenty of trips to Vegas/NYC/LA/etc. We're really visiting a buddy who moved out to Austin and while we were out here figured we'd do the race and the Cowboys game because frankly we don't know what else we would do in Texas.

Ahh. Well considering the late flight plus early Saturday start your Friday night is kind of dead. May want to consider just staying in Fort Worth for the weekend. Plenty of restaurants/nightlife, closer to your race, and it's about the same distance to JerryWorld and the airport as Dallas is.

What is the area of Dallas has all the night life?

Trying to book a hotel and just not sure what area to book near.

The two contenders are:

Springhill Hill Suites (West End) $285

Or

Baymont Inn & Suites (near Love Field) $180 on groupon.

Which one is closer to the night life? Is Baymont too far from the nightlife that taking Taxi/Uber/Lyft would eat into the savings?

West End is closer but still a cab from any decent night life. No one actually goes out in the West End.

If you want to walk to the bars, look at Hotel Zaza. Expensive though.

Where is the decent nightlife? From the hotel zaza suggestion it seems like uptown is where it's at?

Screw the race and experience Dallas over the weekend, go to the Cowboys game, and then come to Austin for the rest of the week. It's pretty ####### ######ed to think that there's nothing else to do in the whole state of Texas.

All day and no suggestions? Vegas, NY, SF all have a bunch of suggestions from FBG.

Any recommended places to eat in Dallas, Arlington, and Austin? Favorite BBQ spots?

Also, what should we expect tailgating wise at Jerry's World?

Austin - In terms of BBQ, Franklin's is the tourist trap. Spent 6 years in Austin, never went. Go under the radar and find a Rudy's. Yes, they're attached to gas stations. Or if you want to blend touristy with good, go to the Salt Lick. It's a bit outside of town, though. Stubb's is also an alternative. I'd definitely get some Tex-Mex. I was partial to Trudy's over Chuy's.

As for partying, you may elect to go to the "dirty" part of 6th St., but pray it's not a night where the thugs are out. You're probably OK on weeknights. I'd hit up the Dizzy Rooster, Blind Pig and Chuggin' Monkey. Apparently this part of town has a thing for bars named after animals.

As a guy in his late 20's, I'd opt for West 6th. Dogwood is good as well as The Ranch and the Brew Exchange. Little Woodrow's is probably a solid spot to watch MNF. If you want some local flavor, go to the Mean Eyed Cat. Solid Tex-Mex across the street at El Arroyo. You can get around on pedi-cabs pretty easily.

Hamilton Pool is beautiful. Can't go wrong with Barton Springs, either. If you want to mix the sights with some drinks, head to Hula Hut / Abel's on the Lake.

I have a whole guide to Austin that is way better than the one above that I post for people I like.

Franklin is a tourist trap? That's crazy talk. Still, given limited time in Austin, probably better options than spending four hours in line at Franklin.

Wow, disagree with pretty much every point. Too each his own I guess.

I'd probably care if this post came from someone without a "hot chick pic" as an avatar and didn't misspell "to".

I'm honestly curious as to why you consider Franklin (not Franklin's) Barbecue a "tourist trap."

Yeah, Franklin is life-changingly good but the wait is not for the faint of heart.
Does it get busy even on weekdays? We should be there Monday to Wednesday.
Yep. People line up for lunch by 8 am every day.For real, go to west 6th to chase tail and Rainey St for a more laid back Austin experience. There's a good food trailer park on Cesar Chavez just east of I 35 that has some good stuff including La Barbecue which is very good. Frank makes gourmet hot dogs, Chedd's makes gourmet grilled cheese. Hamilton Pool is beautiful. Barton Springs pool is also pretty unique and in town. Alamo Drafthouse is a great place to watch a movie, although there are places with beer and movies everywhere now. Top Golf is kinda hard to explain, but it's like a driving range/bar and stays busy all the time including during the week. Pretty good scene.

ETA - Go to Torchys for tacos and Hopdoddy for burgers.

Wait... nirad was serious? I thought that was "give bad advice to someone you don't like" shtick.

Recommending Stubbs, Salt Lick, and "under the radar" Rudy's? C'mon... this can't be real.

For bbq that's closer to Franklin quality without the Franklin wait, I second the La Barbeque recommendation. There's a line there also but it's managable. And you can help yourself to the free keg of Lone Star while you wait. I think they're closed Mondays and Tuesdays though.

John Mueller Meat Co. is also very good. An even shorter line here, but you still want to arrive fairly early for best selection.

Another option is stopping on your way down from DFW to check out one of the original BBQ beacons... Louie Mueller Barbeque in Taylor.

You may get more locals in this thread if you change the title. I saw "DAL" and thought Dallas but then hesitated to click because I didn't see how that related to ARL?? and Australia.

"DFW and Austin Footballguys..." would be much more clear. The DFW metroplex includes Arlington.

Good call on JMMC. Thought I'd read on Shaggybevo last week that he'd gone out of business again but I guess not.

16 - it's your loss if you come to Austin and don't go to the places I recommend. I'm pretty important here.

Dallas - Uptown is the place to be.

Ginger Man is chill, I'd recommend along with a few others bars there. Always a blast on OU/TX weekend, which is really the only time I went out in Dallas.

Salt lick might be the most inedible BBQ out there.

No better place to stay in Dallas than Homewood Suites on Elm street.

It's maybe $170 a night but free hot breakfast complete with waffles, eggs, bacon, fruit...all you can eat. Dinner is included complete with unlimited beer and wine from 5pm - 7pm.

Which is typical of all Homewood Suites but this one has a giant playroom complete with new large pool table, video game room with xbox, ps3, stand up video games, another room with golf simulator with most course available to play, a large fully surround sound theater room with stadium seating to watch the newest dvds.

This place is a playpen for adults...it's awesome.

It's directly connected to the Dallas Underground Pedestrian Network.

Mickelthwait is also just down the road from Franklin and has some pretty good Que. There are some really good high end restaurants as well. Uchiko and Congress top the list, I also like places like Jeffrys and Wink. If you visit Barton Springs set some time aside to walk the greenbelt. If you do, there's a great taco joint called Taco Deli off the path tucked behind an apartment complex. Barton Springs can be pretty crowded, Hamilton Pool is much cooler. There are some other good swimming spots like Krause Springs (bit of a drive), Deep Eddy, Hippie Hollow, and McKinney Falls. Going to see the bats at dusk is pretty touristy, but it's a ton of friggin bats. They practically black out the sky. You can walk down south congress and check out some shops and eclectic Austin while you are at it. If you go out to west Austin near the 360 bridge there are some good trails to walk and you get a view of the skyline as well as the hill country. If you travel back in time you can hit up some arcades on the drag (einsteins & le Fun), other than that it the drag is pretty much a bust. Hole in The Wall is a good bar but that's about it. Get some breakfast at Kirby Lane Cafe. There are a few of them, the ones down town have more of the original vibe. If you do go to a Rudy's just get their breakfast tacos. For good mexican food go just about anywhere that doesn't look too nice. Taquerias Arandinas comes to mind.

Make sure to stop in West on way from Dallas to Austin for kolaches.
Czech Stop, not Slovacek's. On the East side of I-35. I highly recommend any of the fruit ones with cream cheese, and absolutely try the Hot Chubbie with cheese.

Stuck at Phoenix waiting for a connecting flight.

Didn't get to see much of Dallas due to late fights on Friday and the Spartan Race taking longer than expected didn't get a good feel of Uptown. Looks like a cool scene, but again didn't get to experience much. Since we had late starts to our nights in Dallas spent time at The Men's Club and Jaguars.

AT&T stadium was awesome. Really cool vibe and had tons of fun. The live band at the Jack Daniels bar was great.

Really wished we had checked out Austin during the weekend. The bars and live music were awesome. Where else can here rock, blues, hip hop, and a dj spinning EDM on the same street? Coming back for sure for SXSW or ACL. Hamilton pool was nice, I can see during summer would be awesome.

Food wise hit up Torchys and my friend brought us to Rudys as well as a ramen place.

Checked out San Antonio one afternoon and it was ok. Definitely a small town feel vs. Austin or Dallas. However, it also felt more touristy but that can be due to just sticking around the Riverwalk.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Rudy's is fantastic chain food, I hit it up every time I drive through El Paso. Lean brisket, smoked turkey, pepper bar. Lunch of champions.

Obviously if I were in Austin I would be eating at the mom and pops, you guys are spoiled with all of the brisket options around there. Are the places in Lockhart any good?

Lockhart is traditionally good but you can get better in Austin these days. Wouldn't have said that five years ago.
