Well, it's a new year. I'm watching the Hyundai tourney in Hawaii from Chicago where it's -15 ####### degrees outside. Anyway...

What are your goals? How many rounds? Handicap improvement? Area of your game you need to work on? Post them here.

I would like to find out how Zach Johnson swings. I think I like the simple action. It's like no forearm rotation. Watching him play along side Dustin Johnson is pretty funny.

Just booked a trip to Kohler, WI in July

Whistling Straits

Blackwolf Run

Erin Hills

Any advice?

Get over my tendonitis so I can play without pain.

Work on pitching and be a little more consistent. I didn't have a great year but slapped together some good rounds late to drop my hcp.

goals for 2014:

- play 20+ rounds

- see my index move into the 17s (went from 20.2 to 18.3 last year)

- figure out how to hit my driver so it's not a liability

- track my round-by-round stats more consistently

- make a birdie every round

- keep every round in 2014 under 100

That's a tough one. I'm a 7/8 hcp and haven't pulled that off.

Adding 1 goal - no 90's. I blew up last year twice and shot 90 and 91 - the 91 I was completely hungover, my 4th round of the weekend and running on fumes but still

- Get into single digits; currently about an 11-12

- Average no more than 1 double-bogey/round

- Average no more than 1 3-putt/round

- Take lessons

- Try to have fun and not get too pissed when I'm sucking it up

Quint - check out thegrint.com -- it's a free service and their app is great for tracking stats like GIR, FW%, etc...

yeah, a birdie every 18 is a tall order. it goes hand-in-hand with my goal with my driver: by not topping or push/pulling it OB, i can take better advantage of Par 5s. of the Par 5s at my local track, i've only made 4 on one of them, and it was the only one over 500 yards.

awesome! thanks for the suggestion, i'll check it out.

Kicking this year off beginning this weekend while playing in my local course's match play championship. First ever multi-weekend tournament I've ever played. Should be a blast.

2013 was a roller coaster for me. Prior to 2013 I only ever played golf a couple times a year since HS (where I was a reserve player and just played on the team to get the free golf and get out of school early). I married into a big golf family and decided to dedicate some serious time to it. Played over 50 rounds in 2013 (god bless living in AZ) and dropped my handicap from 20+ to as low as 8.2. Was hitting 52% of fairways and 43% of greens.

What's funny as the better I seem to play the last couple of months and despite a 72 (with my first ever hole in one), my handicap has bounced back up to a 9.5. GIR has dipped below 35%. So, realistically my goal for 2014 is to get that back below 8 and get my iron play figured out. Everyone I talked to stresses the difficulty of decreasing once you get into single digits. I'd like to get to a point where I can play several rounds in a row without a duff/major chunk and going OB. Recently it seems that every round I play has at least one complete chunk or a putt that blows way past the hole. My putting has also been consistently around 32/round since I started tracking and would like to see that get near 30.

I use the Nike Golf App. Love it. Sounds similar.

Yeah man that's a pretty lofty goal. My BIL who I keep stats with, and who played on the Junior PGA or whatever when he was in HS and who is now about a 6, only averages 1.1 birdies/round.

Personally, I'm the type of player who is long and can hit some great shots, but is unpolished and erratic (usually take at least one double bogey per round) keeping me in the 9ish range. In 2013 I had several rounds with 2 plus birdies and even one miraculous round where I made two eagles and 4 birdies. Even so I only average .8/round.

I'm not trying to talk you out of your goal, but as a 17 I frankly think something like scoring no higher than a 7 on a hole for a round and recording at least 3 pars is the better target.

agreed. probably more realistic.

Hitting Greens In Regulation is the single best stat for lowering your score. In addition if you want more birdies - every GIR gives you a birdie putt. The average birdies per round of a person who shoots 85 is less than 1 (.8)

I shoot in the low 80s high 70s and I'm a par machine. A typical round is like 10-12 pars, 5-7 bogies and a double.

Played in my first ever match play tournament this weekend. Shot 10 over my handicap each day and got smoked. I suck.

Apparently I haven't mastered my nerves yet.

Finished last season as legitimate 6 handicap, lowest for me since 05-06 timeframe when i was a soft 4.5. Goal for this yr is get to scratch. Ill play a lot more than normal and practice as much as time allows. We'll see...

Because of weightlifting I've been doing 3+ years my balance is off the charts now and i am longer than ever at age 46. Time to fine tune these advantages and bring overall scoring down. Will be focusing most on putting, bunker play, lob/pitch 30-60 yd stuff and driving consistency

If you aren't filming your practice sessions then start doing it.

I did it for the first time this past Sunday and have probably never felt better about being able to fix my flaws in the future while I'm practicing or even during a round. I've never had better feedback than actually seeing with my own eyes exactly what my setup/alignment/swing is/are doing on each shot.

Download the app ubersense on your iPhone - it allows you to slow things down to 1/8th the speed on a video. It helped me get a feel for how I thought I was clearing my hips but definitely was not.

What drills would you guys suggest if your problem is standing up through the swing? I have a hard time keeping my posture and tend to throw my hips towards the ball while flipping at the ball with my right hand. I would like to keep my weight even between the heel and toe, but I always seem to get on my toes in the follow-through.

Downloaded this as well from the suggestion of this thread and a co-worker.

Hope to go out whenever I am in AZ for a wedding next month.

Nice. I played superstition Saturday, ken McDonald Sunday, and about to go play kokopelli. Let me know if you need a group to play in.

FYI for those looking to get out of the bad weather, the courses here in az couldn't be in better shape and the weather any more perfect for golf. Playing as much as possible.

I'll be in Scottsdale for about 10 days in the middle of March, I may take you up one of those days.

Amazing golf course and history...hope to make it there some day.
It's pretty incredible. I was there for Sunday when Bubba won a couple of years ago. The fact that there are no cell phones makes it's truly unique. We were camped on 18 and you can really tell the difference between a birdie roar and an eagle roar when the groups are going through amen corner. Compare that to other tournaments I've been to (heritage/players championship/tour championship where everyone is streaming other groups on their phone while waiting for the next shots live, and it's just a different feel.

Also first thing you'll notice when you get to Augusta - hole 10 tee to fairway is an insane drop. You have no idea the sense of scale unless you actually see it in person. The rest of the course you can get a pretty good feel for just by watching on TV.

I won passes for Monday this year - pretty pumped to get back out there.

Anyone in the Ft Myers area this week? I'm playing Old Corkscrew Friday at 9:30 and can comp the person who plays with me.

PM if interested.

UPS just dropped off new set of Callaway X Hot irons, they feel so much lighter than my Taylormade RAC OS irons.

Picked them up 5-PW stiff flex for a steal on Rockbottom Golf $260.00. Then ordered the 4 iron from Callaway directly. Surprised to get new set of irons for $300.00.

Can't wait for the snow to melt!

Watching Accenture match play, Dubuisson vs Day. Gotta love seeing a Frenchman! He doesn't even look like a golfer.
