2014 Seattle Mariners (1 Viewer)

Not sure if this is a small or big goal but .500 or better would be nice.

Small steps. Won 7 straight season openers. Felix on the mound for his 7th opening day, Angels always seem to give him trouble though.

Sort of embarrassed Anaheim in the three games. More of an ### kicking than it was wins. Gotta wonder just how bad Angels might be this year after watching all three blowouts.

Brad Miler is going to be a solid player. Cano is Cano. Seager hasn't started hitting yet but should, Zunino and Smoak showing signs, pitching has always has been decent, we'll just skip over the outfield, they sign Morales. Mariners will be playing meaningful baseball in at least August this year. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Who is the current closer? And who will be the closer in 2 months? Anyone in Seattle know? Not sure if they really think Rodney is the guy

They're paying Rodney $14M. He'll have a long leash.

Farquhar and Wilhelmsen are the alternatives if Rodney gets hurt or completely fails.

Fernando Rodney is the closer they just signed him for 2 years. The GM out here is trying to keep his job so anything could happen as far as him staying with the team but unless him completely flames out I'd think he'd be the guy for the

Probably Danny Farquhar or maybe Tom Wihelmsen would be the next guy in line.

The Rodney signing didn't make much sense. Why pay big money to a marginal and old closer when you have in-house options available? Jack Z could have used that money and bought another DH or two.

Jack Z had surprising success his first year and has been pretty shaky since. That year bought him a lot of time. Seattle is also pretty timid town in terms of media coverage on sports. There was an article from a Seattle writer who is pretty respected this winter that made him look pretty bad some of the highlights are here: JACK

Totally agree that the Rodney signing was weird. Wasn't that expensive but would much rather see that money spent getting Nelson Cruz up here or Morales.

It's not a bad lineup that Jack Z has put together. But it looks like a fantasy team that went Cano and Felix in the first two rounds and then got caught out at the end of a run on OF. They need somebody (Seager, Smoak, Miller, Zunino) to make the leap and avoid injuries because there's not much depth.

Yup, the lineup looks better but they did completely blow the bank on Cano.

Seager hasn't put a whole season together but he's been decent. Miller will be OK as well I think offensively but his D is a bit shaky. Like Zunino as a average big league catcher. Smoak is the key IMO, if he can become 90% of what he was supposed to be M's will look a lot better this year.

The OF is really a mess, one of worst in majors. That's where Jack has no excuses.

So the difference between Felix having 2 earned runs in three games and the 5 he has is a couple partial innings that some managers early in the year wouldn't have let him go out for. Kind of a bummer as 2 earned runs in 21 innings sounds a lot more dominant than 5 in 21.1.

ETA: Those 2 earned runs would have been the first inning of the first game with no outs too meaning he'd be riding a 21 innings without an earned run (1 unearned) and I think an 18 1/3 scoreless inning streak

Oof. 8 Loses in a row. This team is so, so bad. Can't hit their way out of a wet paper bag. What's funny is the manager was mad the stater, Ramirez gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. Hey, knucklehead, why don't you get on the offense? They are the one's that are letting the the starters down, not the other way around!

And to think that guy was career 0-8 with a terrible era and offense couldn't score on him in 6.2 innings and he struck out 12. Pretty sad to go after the pitcher after a performance like the offense against their starter.

What's the talk on Seager's issues? Having Lloyd there wasn't factored into my decision to take Seager, probably should have been.

ETA: changed was to wasn't, Lloyd is terrible

At least when Brendan Ryan was the starting SS we had one of the best defensive SS in the game. Miller obviously isn't as good defensively and can't even beat him offensively. How the heck are we at the point we are longing for Brendan Ryan production at SS?

ETA: :wall: Takes a walk in the 6th but stills screws up the offense getting thrown out on the bases for the last out when Cano would be coming up with 1st and 2nd.

51 - 44 heading into the break. Tied for 1st in the Wild Card. You'd have to like the M's chances in a 1 game playoff against anybody.

Rumor mill keeps having the M's talking about getting David Price. I'd give up Tijuan Walker and another prospect for him in a heartbeat. Make it happen Jack Z.

Don't know about trading for Price since don't believe he'd commit to staying here long term but sure would take a SS. Just saw this on a different board after his error tonight

'After tonight Miller will have the lowest fielding % of all SS in the MLB

Pair that with him .204/.270/.329 and it makes me wonder why we have to keep watching him?!?!'

If the Mariners want a veteran shortstop, there are plenty if teams that would jump at the chance to get Brad Miller.

Love Miller but he is awful in the field. Hasn't hit crap this year either. Bad combo...

Pretty sure Price is signed through next year. If that's right I'm getting him even if they want Walker and another top prospect.

Felix / Price / Iwakuma they have a chance against anyone. You can then always trade Price next year and recoup some of what you lost if the team for some reason just goes in the tank.

Same place I was reading about M's and Price said they were looking at Zobrist too. Not sure where his contract is at but have always liked that guy.

If Jack Z doesn't make this team better by the end of today, we officially off his bandwagon right? I'm tired of this team only going out and getting players that used to be good and hoping that they can turn it around. How about we get someone that actually is good and on the upswing, instead of the downswing.

While I will say Austin Jackson, Denofria and Kendrys Morales is better than what we had, they are still pretty mediocre and a prime example of Jack getting players whose best years are behind them instead of in front of them. These moves he's made do nothing really for improving their playoff chances this year or improve the club long term, so I'm officially out on Jack Z. Time to move on.

When the best thing you can say about your GM is that he didn't make a bad trade or mistake by trading away your best prospects, that's pretty bad.

So he gave up almost nothing to upgrade a historically bad offense to make it now just a run of the mill poor offense. Sorry if I'm not over here doing headstands.

I love the team, I want to see them win, I want something to be excited about, but unfortunately there hasn't been anything like that since 2001. Going through the same pattern of mediocre to bad the last 13 years...

We are on same page.

Should have added that I giving Jack some credit for not giving everything away because there is a good chance he is gone and he knows it. He left the big pitching prospects there for the next guy.

####### Astros...
Astros didn't have much to do with it, starting pitching has just fallen apart. One point this summer you could throw Felix, Kuma, Elias, and Young and feel good you would get 3 good starts each time through. Elias hurt (and struggled late), Kuma has stunk for like a month, Young fell off a cliff, and Paxton drilled tonight.

Looks like only postseason activity Mariners will take part in is waiting for whether or not Felix gets his second CY Young
