Word from camp is he's been amazing. He's stuck behind yeremiah bell however in the depth chart. Think this kid will still be able to be relevant barring an injury to bell?

He should be on the field plenty as a slot corner or safety in most packages I would think. He represents a lot of upside with big play ability. Good story, and good kid by all accounts who is just a football player with great instincts. I'm rooting for him.

He is not a threat to Bell, as Bell will line up at SS in AZ

I would bet that he ends up being the starting FS and nickel corner.

I wouldn't necessarily call him a good kid either. There aren't many good kids that have arrest records and get kicked out of school. I am not saying he hasn't learned his lesson or he hasn't grown up, but calling him a good kid at this point is premature in mho. Unless we have very different opinions of what a "good kid" is. :-)

"BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Former LSU football standouts Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Jefferson were among four ex-players arrested Thursday after police found them with marijuana at Mathieu’s apartment, police said.

Lt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge Police spokesman, said officers were called to the apartment complex about 3:30 p.m. after receiving a complaint about a man forcing his way through the security gate before going to Mathieu’s apartment.

“Officers immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana and obtained consent from Mathieu to search the apartment,” Kelly said.

Inside they found Jefferson and two other men — Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant — as well as a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high-grade marijuana. Kelly said seven of the bags were found inside Bryant’s book bag."

I really wish he was listed as a CB.

I'm pretty impressed by the preseason stuff on this guy. As a FS, his week-to-week consistency is probably limited, but I think I would set his number of TDs this year at 2.

I am targeting him as my 4th safety, and will probably be willing to reach for him, trusting I can get a safe dependable vet later to be my 3rd safety.

so he smoked some weed. are you suggesting that anyone in college who smoked some weed by default cannot be a good kid? If so, my whole fraternity and half the kids in school are thugs.

Cardinals FS Rashad Johnson has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle and MCL.
It creates an opening for rookie Tyrann Mathieu, who will start this weekend's game against Dallas. The story of Cardinals camp thus far, we wouldn't rule out the Honey Badger taking Johnson's starting job for good.

Yeah, FBG need to fix the depth charts for ARZ.

They have the safeties switched and the coach reiterated today that Johnson was the FS with Badger as the back up.

Wanted some feedback from you guys, took Mathieu to be my starting DB, any word on whether or not he'll be returning kicks? If so it seems like that would add a ton of value in a league such as mine where he would get points for return TD's. Other DB's available on the WW include L. Landry, Stevie Brown, William Moore, Mark Barron, Bernard Pollard, and Tyvon Branch. Should I cut Mathieu for any of these other guys? Scoring is 1 pt for solos, .5 pt for assists, 2 pts for sacks, 3 pts for INTs, 1 pt for FF, 2 pts for FR and 6 pts for all D/ST TDs.

I picked him up in my yahoo IDP league. I'm a LSU fan live in Louisiana, so I have watched him play in a ton of games. He was the fan favorite for sure. was loved by LSU community fan base. He has incredible nose for the ball similar to Troy Polamalu. I'm not saying he has the tackling or coverage skills, or maybe oveall football skills as Polamalu...

its just that Mathieu was always involved in the tackle on just about every play, he will find his way to the ball by the end of the play if he does not end the play himself. also caused alot of forced fumbles, and sacks. At games, when he intercepted a pass, we would stand with anticipation of a TD return becuase it seemed like it was a 50/50 proposition he would score.

I know the NFL is an entirely step up in talent, not expecting the same results. But hoping.

I took him as a 3rd DB option, we start 2 in my league, and i don't have him starting week one. My hopeful expectations is surely ARZ isn't stupid enough not to let this guy return kickoffs and punts. he is a threat to score every time he touches the ball including interceptions.

Arz has a very good defense, and Mathieu will have to work his way up the food chain, hopefully we will see him in the nickel package more often than not. I anticipate he will be a playmaker, and hopefully by mid year, Arizona will have a solid plan on how to use this ballhawk.

Could be a big week for Tyrann this week as they play Detroit who will be in 3 wide sets for > 90% of their snaps. Xavier Rhodes who is Minnesota's nickel corner was on the field for ~ 90% of the snaps last week. Tyrann managed a 7 solo 1 FF line playing ~ 60% of the defensive snaps last week.

Looks like the ride might be coming to an end for the Honey Badger. He's not getting the majority of snaps at FS even though last game he was even with Rashad Johnson active. Coming in with the nickel package, but Seattle rarely uses a 3/4 WR set. Will wait to see how the 2nd half flushes out.

Any word on Tyrann Mathieu and why he hasn't gotten more snaps?

The week prior to the BYE he was in on 15 snaps and posted an astounding 5 solos on those 15 defensive snaps.

I asked Dr. Jene in the Sunday morning thread two weeks ago about when he felt Ty might be 100% and he said, after the BYE but in the last game against the Broncos he did not get any more snaps than what he had in the 49ers game and posted the exact same 15 snaps but he didn't make a single tackle or produce anything.

I caught part of that game and I don't recall seeing him at all but the other DBs looked good and were producing.

Anyone have any insights or information on the Honeybadger?

3 of Arizona's top 4 tacklers are their 3 S's...Johnson, Bucannon and Jefferson. Not always the greatest sign, but I think it speaks to how well those 3 are playing right now.

I'm guessing the team doesn't feel the need to rush Mathieu back. Jefferson, the guy that's been prognosticated to lose snaps upon his return, but he's currently leading the team total tackles (31) and solo tackles (27).

Alex MarvezVerified account ‏@alexmarvez Arians said S Tony Jefferson is making it hard for Tyrann Mathieu to get back on field. Arians thought Mathieu played scared in 1/2 v 49ers

@alexmarvez Why not use Mathieu at slot corner or FS? Jefferson is the SS.

  2. @nfldraftscout @alexmarvez he basically was playing in slot. Just a little timid. He will be fine

Good info. Not a good sign that his snaps did not increase after the bye. He's on my bench till he has a decent game. C'mon "Honey Badger don't care!"
