WSL1 - Draft Commentary (1 Viewer)

so we can make comments on picks, ask questions, share thoughts etcI encourage all of the WSL1 drafters to participate in this thread and share your logic about drafting as well as your player evaluations. There are really only two rules. The first is to NOT discuss players not yet drafted and the second is just to be a good neighbor.First pick was pretty easy - even with PPR, Peterson still had more points than any nonQB and I will bet on that repeating this yearPVH

Interesting start to WSL 1 so far. If I remember correctly only like 3 running backs went in the top 5 last year and this year 5 for 5. Amazing how much difference a year makes.

Tough pick for me at 1.7. Thought about going top flight wr or te but felt like rb will dry up quickly in 16 teamer. I'm not concerned like some about Bryce brown or move to Kelly from Reid. McCoy will be a stud and had high ceiling and as high upside as anyone left out there at the position.

Really wanted Calvin at 1.10 but he ent a pick earlier. Lynch was a defensive don't blow it in the 1st round type of pick. I would have taken Calvin anywhere from 1.3 on.

Calvin was the only non-RB I contemplated at 1.6. When I saw 5 RB's were gone my first reaction was I'm taking Calvin but after more consideration I felt if I passed a RB now I'd be spending the rest of the draft cobbling them together and at this point I've got Charles rated as a top 5 RB so I went that direction.

I considered Calvin at 1.04 instead of Rice. Would have taken him over Martin if Fiddles had taken Rice. Didn't quite expect the RB run we've had this far but there are so few 3-down backs anymore you almost have to stretch for one. There won't be any left at the end of the 2nd.

With the massive RB run off the bat, there were a lot of options with the 12 spot. Only 8 picks before I go again, so I decided to go with Spiller and the allure of a large workload pass-catcher. The unknown coach is a definite concern.

Picking at the end usually makes for an interesting draft IMO. For this turn I know there will be no stud RBs making it back to me, the top 5-7 QBs will probably be taken by the next go-round, as will many WRs. So the question is where do I take risk? I figured I wanted a solid RB even if he isn't likely to be a top 5 back, Forte is solid. Brees is one of my favorite players and I feel quite confident in relying on him every week.

sweet turn

None of my prayers made it around to me. Went QB and Brady as things can get dicey fast with the QBs in these WSLs.

Hoped to grab a RB as one of my 1st two picks near the bottom, but there was no value. I'll take two guys who could easily finish as the #1 overall at their respective positions.

Maybe it's happened before, but in 10+ years of messageboard drafts I don't ever remember starting RB/RB. Usually I have a few RB sleepers tucked away for the middle rounds and some ppr specialists that will be available later. This year I have no confidence in my ability to someone serviceable later, much less a diamond in the rough.Lynch - As stated before, I would have preferred Calvin here. Very boring pick, but Seattle has a strong offense and he's a beast. McCoy would have been my preferred RB. Considered Spiller strongly, but I still think FJax is a talented back. I had zero interest in going QB early.MJD - First round talent and contract year. Downside is a reliable performer, upside is a top five finish. There was one other RB I would have selected here and thought hard about over MJD.I think I'll like the WRs and QBs available in the 3rd and 4th round.I'll be travelling Sat-Mon with limited access. Jeff P has my number.

Hernandez pick for me in the second was a much easier call than Charles in the first. I believe at the RB, QB and WR position we are already drafting a lower tier of players than what was previously available. Hernandez was the one guy left at any position I still viewed as being in the upper tier category.

I was torn and seriously considered hernandez right before you but his inability to stay healthy and play close to 16 games is why I shied away from him. On a ppg basis he is a top tier type guy but Im not sure he can be relied upon for more than 10 games. If he does he is a steal.

1.14 Alfred Morris RB WAS2.03 Jason Witten TE DALI was happy to land Alfred Morris at the end of round 1. Morris is one of those backs that get the majority of his teams carries so that was hard to pass up late in the first round. Witten was just too good to pass up in the early 2nd round, especially with the increased TE scoring in these leagues. Witten kept good pace with the top TE's in the league.

I guess you could say I went "old school" at the turn with Welker and Wayne but fact it they were still both Top 10 WR with solid production in mostly passing offenses and I think they will both do that again in 2013.And it would be really nice to have the WR squad led by solid producers every week and have some of the later picks get a high score in here and there because they won't count every week.

I don't disagree he comes with an element of injury risk or would argue with anyone who devalues him because of it but that seems like a harsh assessment of his availability. 10 games is his career low and that took a severe high ankle sprain in week 2, was around for at least 14 games the previous two seasons.

10 games played is his career season low you are right but its 14, 14, 10 and he has been knocked out of several more. So he hasn't shown the ability to get through a whole season without getting banged up. He could easily play a whole season next year or he couldn't who knows. When he is on the field he is a beast. It will be interesting to see if he and gronk remain on the field together for most of next year if so they will likely end up 1/2 or 1/3 like in 2011.

1.02 Arian Foster, HOU2.15 Roddy White, ATL3.02 Matt Ryan, ATLWent Foster for TDs, and Ben Tate isn't as reliable as a #2. Houston still has to run a ton and Foster is the #1 guy in that offense.Went Roddy White because I don't think ATL's TE will return next year, so him and Julio Jones will see a ton of work again. Matt Ryan is the crux of that offense, so I like him for 30+ TDs and 4500+ yards next year.I'll worry about the bye week conflict there later. That's one game.

The bye week wouldn't bother me. The bigger risk IMO is an injury to your QB or top WR hurts the other a LOT. Granted, their injury risk doesn't seem high, but you just never know.

Sorry, I have been down and out with the flu the last 5 days. I am hopefully getting back to being full strength so I will be more alert for picks and comments.

My draft started very oddly. By the time my pick rolled around, the RB tree had largely been picked clean outside of a few with potential top 10 ambitions. The default #1 WR also went 2 picks in front of me. So while I definitely wanted a WR, I was left figuring out which one. Thought about AJ Green and Julio Jones, but ended up picking Marshall. Why? He was targeted 192 times in 2012 (Around 30-40 more times than any WR not named Calvin Johnson or Reggie Wayne) and Cutler showed he had no problem slinging it every single game. Andre Johnson can be the #1 WR in the format in years he has good TD turnout and his average year is in the top 10. Andrew Luck was probably early, but he had the 5th most attempts last year and the Colts O runs through him. After I missed out on Stafford, I rather have Luck than anyone else available.

Taking some risk with established WRs coming off bad years for different reasons. Nicks and Fitz should both be viable WR1 caliber players IF healthy and Arizona gets a new QB (or maybe they just improve to average?) but there's a fair risk associated with both which is why they fell. Still, if all works out as I'd hope, a quartet of Brees, Forte, Fitzgerald and Nicks seems pretty nice on paper.

I was second guessing the Brady pick, but QB went heavy in round 3 so I don't feel too bad. I have no idea when the next TE will go, lol. RB didn't seem like much value at this point either. WR really got hammered over the turn, mixed the high upside Cobb with more of a steady eddie in Smith, was really hoping for Colston.

1.14 Alfred Morris RB WAS2.03 Jason Witten TE DAL3.14 Eric Decker WR DEN4.03 Russell Wilson QB SEAI was happy to land Alfred Morris at the end of round 1. Morris is one of those backs that gets the majority of his teams carries so that was hard to pass up late in the first round. I also considered Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees at this pick.Witten was just too good to pass up in the early 2nd round, especially with the increased TE scoring in these leagues. Witten kept good pace with the top TE's in the league. I considered Julio Jones and Tom Brady at this pickWith the third pick I knew I wanted to go WR. So I took a high upside WR in Decker who can put up a huge number on any given week, which is nice in a survivor league. I considered Larry Fitzgerald with my third as well. With the fourth pick I was targeting a QB. In the end I decided to go with Russell Wilson because once again I liked the fact that Wilson can put up a huge scoring week on any given week. I also considered Romo here as well.I like the fact that I have 1 player from each of the offensive positions. This will allow me to be more flexible in the middle rounds coming up here. I won't feel like I have to reach for a certain positions.

The RB run went deep, 2 pt per rec for TE and I think with Payton being back next year the Saints are going to have an F U NFL attitude and will really try to turn things up. Murray is a decent value at RB13 with his situation in Dallas if he can stay healthy because we have seen the difference in the offense with him in the lineup. I was amazed and stoked that Nelson was still there with my 3rd round pick. GB is and will be a pass first offense and while you never know who might get the catches, having one of the top 3 in that offense is value. Matthews is a swing for the fences hope he finally gets it player who hopefully can impress the new coaching staff enough to get the touches.

Killed a good start by taking the biggest bust in fantasy in quite some time in Mathews. I seriously wouldnt take that guy if you paid me in a free league. He has zero talent, none what so ever to speak of. No burst, fumbles all the time, no knack for the endzone and he gets tired just walking to the huddle. Waste of space and a useless fantasy player in ever sense of the word.Oh and I didnt want to state the obvious, but he is ALWAYS hurt! ALWAYS! Waste of space and a far reach for anyone as a #2 RB, I would take my chances with a rookie at RB2 before I hope that this piece does anything. Most overhyped fantasy player in the history of fantasy football. Even worse than Finley, at least he did something.

How do you really feel? ;)Mathews is one of the guys we always wait for to explode but always disappoints. I did pick him up recently in a dynasty dispersal draft, in the 6th round ahead of Peyton Manning, Perry Riley, Donta Hightower... and a few decent WRs who haven't been drafted yet. At that price I figured I'd take a chance. The funny thing about Mathews is he's a pretty consistent performer when he plays, in the regards that he tends to get just under 100 total yards a game even if he's healthy.

Interesting strategy by BnB. I was/am considering doing the same in WSL3. I have a very short list of guys I consider 4th round talent, but if they get snatched..............

Maybe, but in a survivor, I believe you have to minimize risk to really contend. Mathews is beyond risk in the 4th.

222 attempts 1091 yards for a YPC of 4.9 6 tds 50 catches 455 yards.who's stat line is that? Mathews from just 2 seasons ago, good enough for RB #7. I freakin hate the dude. his shoulders are made of glass, but he has had decent production before

And as as poor as last season was there are not a lot of RB's who would score close to 12 fantasy points scoring one TD every 12 games. Obviously the big thing with him has been availability. Not that he does not have other concerns besides injury like the fact one of the best coaches for fantasy RB's and a GM that both tried hard to make him a feature back are both gone but I still thought he was worth the gamble.

2 years ago, I can quote stats from lots of players who performed 2 years ago who have done nothing today. Fact is, last year he did not do anything but regress after another year in the league. He has had opportunity after opportunity. You can pick him anytime, but I choose to put better players on my team with much less risk. If I can help it.

So far:1.6 Jamal Charles- RB- Chiefs2.11 Aaron Hernandez-TE- Patriots3.6 Cam Newton-QB- Panthers4.11 Pierre Garcon-WR- RedskinsThe only pick I've made yet that I clearly knew the player I wanted when I was up was Hernandez. Every other pick I considered at least 2 other players strongly and always different positions at least two different positions. I had not felt good about the Cam pick because I felt that violates my QB draft strategy of grabbing one fairly early. I feel considerably better after watching already seeing a double dip at the QB position.I love Charles in the Andy Reid offense. I think he'll shatter his previous career catch high of 45 and a player like him was made to be put into space. Not much to add on Cam, this scoring format is a little more friendly to passing QB's so that does knock him a tad but he's been productive under any system and under some was the best fantasy QB the second half of the season. Garcon comes with his own health risks and his QB's but I think if he's healthy he can push for top 10 WR numbers. All 4 of these guys are explosive type players who have had some massive games. That was a goal to have players like that at the core so in hopes they cover a deficiency or two down the line.Other than that when you take a QB and TE with 2 of your first 3 picks you know you have some work to do at the RB/WR spot and you are going to need to nail some later picks. How I'll ultimately feel about this team is really going to depend on my feelings towards what I'm able to add at those positions later.

In this type of format (drafting this early) it is all about taking risks. Last year in the WSL I took AD in the 3rd round less than a month after his surgery. Huge risk considering, but he won it for me last year. Am I expecting that type of production from Matthews of course not, but you have to take chances.

Not my preferred route, but these guys cleaned out my list between the 3rd and 4th round. Just couldn't force myself to reach for a 5th round talent in the 4th round.

I understand your risk on AP, however a lot took that risk, me being one of them. A couple points. 1 - You taking a risk on AP is like me taking a risk on Calvin. Best player on my obvious favorite team, maybe true, but still not a big statement on your behalf.2 - Comparing a risk of Mathews to AP in any capacity is very, shall I say for a lack of a better term, insane.I have no problem with your reasoning, but I still have trouble understanding why take that risk in the 4th.

Will have advantage at QB, but with it comes an urgency to draft positional needs which is occasionally troubling in the coming rounds.

at the time of the pick there were about 8-10 guys left at position of need for Bass (WR/TE) that finished in the top 70 (top 64=4th round) last year...let alone some guys who may be coming back from injury that would have cracked that area pretty easily had they played all year....definitely an interesting move and one that I think I have even tried before....we'll see how it plays out....I guess depending on how you look at it a guaranteed bench player can be considered 4th round talent....

Assuming I fill out my starting skill positions (7 of them), I rolling the dice on Keapernick plus 8th round WR nets more points than 4th round WR and 8th round QB back-up.

fixedKap will most definately outscore a 4th round WR by year end....but for week to week lineup purposes I bet not.....he would have to significantly outscore Stafford each week for this to pay off.....which in turn would make the Stafford pick suck donkey balls....

for discussion purposes only....cause I am intrigued by the two QB early strategy....there were 54 WR's last year that averaged 10+ points per week in this format....and 27 TE's....at the time of Bass's pick....21 WR's were gone and 4 TE's....realistically....had Bass gone a different direction with his 4th round pick....it is safe to assume he would have taken one of those 33 WR's or one of the 23 TE's...now I realize in this format, Kap saving your bacon on one week could be the difference (if you kill it the rest of the draft, but let's put that aside), but using 10 points as kind of a baseline.....what really has to happen over the course of the season to basically give up a guaranteed 10 points to make this the right decision (assuming both Staff and Kap stay healthy)....

Interesting strategy by BnB. I was/am considering doing the same in WSL3. I have a very short list of guys I consider 4th round talent, but if they get snatched..............
Not my preferred route, but these guys cleaned out my list between the 3rd and 4th round. Just couldn't force myself to reach for a 5th round talent in the 4th round.
at the time of the pick there were about 8-10 guys left at position of need for Bass (WR/TE) that finished in the top 70 (top 64=4th round) last year...let alone some guys who may be coming back from injury that would have cracked that area pretty easily had they played all year....definitely an interesting move and one that I think I have even tried before....we'll see how it plays out....I guess depending on how you look at it a guaranteed bench player can be considered 4th round talent....
Assuming I fill out my starting skill positions (7 of them), I rolling the dice on Keapernick when he starts for me, minus the difference in points from Stafford those weeks plus 8th round WR nets more points than 4th round WR and 8th round QB back-up.

You typed what I was trying to say better.I'm not going to try to defend that pick to the death because I was torn on it. Here were my thoughts when I pulled the trigger.

1. Stafford can be fragile. Not sure if I'm getting the verison of Stafford that resulted in him going in rd 1 last year or the version that caused him to plummet this year. The yards were there so the TDs could return.

2. Assuming Stafford repeats last year, big yardage, low TDs...the only type of QB that will compliment him in this format is one who can occasionally post big scores. Kap fits that bill with his rushing. QB20 off the board doesn't. I felt like if I didn't take a QB at that spot, I could almost roll solo. Outside of the bye week, a late QB is only adding 25-30 pts to my socre over the course of the year.

3. Kap was the last in his tier in my mind.

4. There's a very good chance one of the WRs I would have selected in the 4th will still be here in the 5th.

I would have likely taken DJax in the 4th round. May have been a reach there, but he made it back to me in the 5th. I think Kelly will get the ball in his hands.

QB - BreesRB - ForteRB - David WilsonWR - FitzgeraldWR - NicksTE - VDavisSo far most of these are relatively safe plays, I just can't see the top 4 playing under their draft position. Davis and Wilson are riskier picks. Wilson is especially someone who could make this team or do nothing. Honestly, I considered both on my short list back in the 3/4 turn so I am pretty happy to see them fall here (but maybe I completely overestimate them?) But hey, at least my all-NFC team looks cool.

1.15 Aaron Rodgers - QB1 - GB2.02 AJ Green - WR3 - Cincy3.15 Michael Crabtree - WR17 - SF4.02 Marques Colston - WR20 - NO5.15 Eddie Lacy - ?6.02 BJGE - RB - CINUsually I try to grab 1 RB in the 1st or 2nd if I am drafting at the bottom, but the runs in this draft have been crazy. Still, I don't see Lacy getting drafted into an Ingram like situation because I expect his draft stock to rise to the mid 1st after the combine. BJGE has a chance of being replaced, but I think Cincy rolls with him one more year.Love my WRs, of course. Actually rank Colston over Crabtree, but I thought there was a better chance of FUBAR sniping Crabtree at that turn.

 although it would have been a hard choice between Crabtree and hicks. I actually like Colston but he's my #3 in my main league.
