Missouri football player Michael Sam is gay (1 Viewer)

Probably going to hurt his draft stock
It can't help. There is a potential media circus following him and teams have to value the distraction that causes against his perceived talent/potential.
Sadly, this sounds accurate. I have absolutely -- and never really have had -- any problems with male homosexuality, but this can't make it easier for him.

He'll have a rooting section, that you can be sure of. It's probably, all in all, good for the NFL, if they play their cards right.

eta* I also agree with LZ Granderson that this should have been met with a shrug, and for his reasons provided. Seems odd in 2014 that this would be a big story.

I am not a fan of this guy waving the "look at me I am gay flag" so I am rooting against him already, blouses....

Lots more hate than usual on the boards lately...good for this guy and anyone on his team that supports him.

Well that's just fabulous!

What round was he predicted to go in?
UFA

J/K, I saw somewhere in rounds 3-4, who knows what this type of information does as far as impact. Be interesting to see what players say in the NFL…countdown to some knucklehead saying "I hope we don't draft him"

I wouldn't be surprised to see him go to Pittsburgh. They could turn him into a backup rush OLB in their system, they need the young depth (feel free to make anal jokes here) and they have a strong, progressive owner and disciplined & respected player's coach who would make it work in an NFL locker room.

CNNSI reported a bunch of anonymous NFL execs who said it'd drop his stock from 3rd round to 7th, if draftable at all. Mostly because they're so worried about the media circus they'd be drafting along with him, as well as how it might mess with an NFL locker room chemistry.

The first is a legit concern, IMO. The second is a B.S. excuse to perpetuate hate.

Plus most blacks are very intolerant on homosexuals. ADP is already on record "No homo"
Most whites were intolerant of blacks back in 1947. That didn't stop the Dodgers though...

I've found that stereotype to be more generational and regional, not to mention due to religion. It's different with the younger crowd, across all racial lines. Radically different.

I think that's a bad racial stereotype and here's why. They make up a large % of the NFL, much larger than say the US population so of course it might seem they are intolerable because they make up the largest % of players but in actuality the % of those players is probably low or in line with intolerance by white people of homosexuals…I might have missed it but I don't know many evangelical churches(largely white) where they are welcome with open arms.

Seems like the type of player BB would draft in the 5th or 6th round because there is value there. My guess is the Pat's locker room could handle it and the media circus wouldn't be a distraction. If having their TE get arrested for murder was easily handled, having this kid on the team wouldn't be an issue.

This is so true, and I hate New England. But if anyone can handle this, it's Kraft and BB. Do. your. job.

Uh no, then he can say the teams that passed on him were homophobes. As politically correct as we are this should guarantee him being the first pick in the draft now. lol
https://twitter.com/sipetethamel/status/432688791112138752One NFL exec says the league ain't ready.
On the other hand, it quotes the GM of the CFL's Saskatchewan RoughRiders as intrigued by his length.

He'll drop in the draft because certain teams are too scared, then he'll get scooped up by the Patriots or some other "progressive" team and he'll end up being the steal of the draft.

While it takes guts and I respect him for coming out like that, I think he just cost himself a lot of money... The difference in a second round contract and fourth round are pretty sizable.

No way it hurts him. If his draft projection says 3-4th round, he will go late 2nd, The NFL is too PC now. There will be teams tripping over themselves to try to draft him. The NFL is not ready for him? Bull####.

This is why he is known as wrong_mx.

How do you think this doesn't hurt him? Every GM is terrified about what this will do to the locker room, the sideshow circus, etc.

No GM wants a Tebow like frenzy on top of a divided locker room.

Fine, bump this thread after the draft to show how coming out improved his draft position.

$100....we get an average draft projection from several sources a couple weeks prior to the draft and see where he goes. If it is +/-10 spots it is a push.

No because his coming out will be factored into what. Tell me where you think he will go now because of all the teams will be tripping over themselves to be PC enough to have the first gay player? What round do you want to bet on now?

How the heck can they factor that in? He is going to be judged by his performance in combines and he will be slotted based on his skills/performance, The projection is not going to factor in his gayness. His actual draft position will be a about 1/2 round better then scouts project..

You want to bet on a round now and put your money where your mouth is or not? If not then (please) shut the hell up.
