Toll-Road Headache (1 Viewer)

Here in SoCal.

Christmas Eve I take the 241, from the 91, down to Mission Viejo. Passed two tolls. Take opposite route the following day passing two tolls. All four tolls total $13.70.

I get a bill today for $243.70 with the penalties. Saying I did not pay my tolls online. If I don't pay by 2/5/15 the total due amount will be $413.

Tolls can only be paid online and have to be paid within 5 days of occurrence.

I have done this process numerous times during the past year. Did it at Thanksgiving and again in early Dec.

I am pretty sure I logged on to their site and paid the tolls right after Christmas. I check my bank statement today and their are no charges. I did not write down the confirmation #. They normally email it to you. I do not have that email either.

I'm thinking they did not process my payment and thus did not send out the email. Their site is intentionally a cluster-eff in order to confuse and make you error when paying your tolls. Or the holidays were a blur and I'm just remembering paying the tolls from Thanksgiving and early Dec.

Four tolls which were $3.50 each are penalized $57.50 each. It's disgusting even if I'm the one in the wrong.

Going to roll with the your website screwed up defense. Hopefully they'll waive the penalties or at least reduce them. Not holding my breath.

My browsing history does not show any visits to thetollroads.com after Christmas. :wall:

Or I just used another computer while staying with family. :wall:

No charges, no confirmation, no email, no browsing history. Yeah, Im sure the mean old government made a mistake.

You can pay tolls online?
I'm guessing it's one of those things where a camera just takes mass records of all the cars passing that point, and then you go pay later. They have them all over the place in Ireland. You just drive, and there's a big sign that basically says, "Go pay your money within 24 hours." What a racket...they don't even have to pay people to sit in booths anymore.

We have what's called an EZTag in Texas. Works on all toll roads in the state. Affixes to your windshield, tolls automatically debited from your account. When your account gets below a certain point, they hit your bank account. Easy as can be. I thought everybody would have one of these.

we have this sweet thing in wisconsin called no toll roads it is pretty fn sweet you just drive around and you do not have to pay good times up in the frozen tundra take that to the bank brohans

Yeah, this is the way the entire East Coast does it. Ours is called EZPass though. Making you go log in and pay them online later is really screwed up.

They will usually drop the fines in Texas if you put yourself on autopay going forward. In the end, that's really what they want you to do. It costs a lot of money to chase you down like they are doing.

Im also a fan of no tolls, but don't kid yourself into thinking you drive around without paying.

Toll road users are ALSO paying all the costs that SWC is paying PLUS the toll.

There were a couple of stories in the WaPo about dudes who had bills of over $10K for unpaid EZPass tolls...
About 8 years ago, I was prohibited from ever having an EZPass account again over a $15 unpaid balance. I was moving to NYC and sold my car and cancelled my account, but the CC I had it tied to expired. They sent notices for the payment to an address I didn't live at anymore (they had my phone number and email address, no contact attempted there). Since there was no response, it went to a collection agency who called me and I paid it immediately.

Moved out of the city a month ago, bought a car and had to get the EZPass in my wife's name. Over $15 which I paid once contact was actually made.

What the hell were those guys doing??

We don't have toll roads near Charlotte yet. We do have a lane completed, but not open, that they want to use as a toll lane in 5 years or so. Just happens to be in the busiest traffic part of town.

welcome to the republic of California. The wife got pulled over a cited for having an expired insurance card. No biggie, take the up to date card to court to prove insurance. Judge still charges her 365 for not having "proof" of insurance when she was pulled over. I almost moved after this one.

SoCal has the ezpass too. But they also used to have actual toll booths with people there to take cash. They did away with them and now you can drive through if you go pay online within a few days. Easier just to sign up for a ezpass if you use the toll roads often enough. But it is nice to be able to use the road without having an account once in awhile.

Yup, but you actually have to log on and pay, not just think you did.

They recently added a toll bridge in Seattle. I have to drive it when I work in the office.

The process getting it to work correctly was messed up, delayed, had some bugs etc. When it finally got going it worked well if you bought the state pass like others sound like they have. You register your car and pay automatically through an account.

About a year after it started I got a bill in the mail for around $200 for 4 infractions. I had a record on my account tracking my trips and it showed I had paid for all these trips.

Went down to their office and they said I had to go to court to get those off even though they could see them in my account, "nothing they could do".

Showed up at court, there was about 20 of us in there. Guy next to me had about 60 infractions at 50 bucks a pop.

Got called up first, didn't get to say a word, the judge talked for 5 minutes and said I didn't need to pay. They knew all this but still made me show up and waste half a day plus all the time figuring out the website and driving to their office to get the court date set.

Moral of this story is if your state is like mine you are just going to have to pay, even if they are in the wrong the process is barely worth the hassle.

You have no record so you are definitely screwed if California handles this like Washington.

When I visited out there I was afraid to drive over the Golden Gate in my rental. It should not be that confusing to have to pay a toll. It's ridiculous. I could by a pre paid pass to use, ezpass, some other method. I wasn't sure what to freaking do, So dumb

brohans i love the thought of there being a swc toll you have to pay whenever you do something i would do like if you take something to the bank bam five smackers to the old swcer or you call someone brohan bam there is a toll on that five more smackaroons to swc man life would be sweet if there was a swc toll take that to the bank bromigos

Where is that? Is that 485 from 77 to Pineville or up north? It looks like there is extra lane that is blocked even though they already have expanded the lanes. The last time I went to the airport (I work from home) during rush hour, it was actually pretty open with a lot less traffic than pre-new lanes.

Yeah, 485

haha very true. Thats why I just have the fastpass or ezpass or whatever its called. Although if you don't use the toll roads enough they do charge $1/mo for the transponder. Always got to get you somehow. But its still better IMO to pay the $1 so you dont have to remember to go online and pay if you want to use the road.

Sunpass here in Florida. I do prepaid and haven't had any issues, but lots of folks have apparently

I got hit on a couple of those same tolls going from SD to LA. Was not nearly that much though. I thought maybe $60 to $70 in tolls and fines.
