What age did you let your kid try alcohol? (1 Viewer)

My kids frequently ask about trying different drinks but until now I've never let them. My oldest is 13 now and I've considered letting him try a beer but the wife keeps telling me no. In hoping he hates it and doesn't want to try it again for a while. Just curious what others have done here.

He was 14. It's a little young, I know, but I needed to calm his nerves before the hooker showed up.

Not old enough yet, but I remember trying my dads beer around that age. That's back in the good old days though. Don't let anyone see you doing it nowadays.

Genesee Cream Ale btw...been 20+ yrs since I sipped one of those.

I dont think Id let him try until hes 21 knowing full well he will when Im not around.
I want to teach my kids responsible drinking so part of that is obviously you can't drink for real until you are 21 - I'm more hoping to have them try it and hate it. Maybe I should go with a sip of Tequlia or something that will burn and not taste good at all. Also, I want to take the mystery out of it so it doesn't seems exciting.

We let our little girls try sips of wine before. I don't want them thinking 'OMG that's an adult thing!!! No!!!' We obviously don't let them actually drink and they hate it.

My grandfather let me try a sip of Budweiser when I was 5 or 6. I hated it.

yeah i think you can teach them without letting them try it. Then again i did give my 3 yr old a tiny sip of beer so he can see how gross it was

In Europe, they practically raise their kids on booze and they turn out just fine. If you make it taboo, they will want it even more.

Never. This country has a huge problem with alcohol and I don't plan to make it ok for my kids to start early. Obviously I can't control them 100% of the time, but I won't condone it either. Yes, I realize I'm in the minority.

We have an eight year old daughter. at home, we have given her very small tastes (dip a pinkie) of virtually everything we have ourselves since she was about 2-3. when she was a little older small sips. over the past year or so, we have given her about 1oz of wine, beer, or whatnot. many times she does not finish it, but she likes comparing the different types we drink.

Chances are they are gonna start on the hard stuff anyways. It's usually available at home and they can put some in a soda bottle and get it out pretty easy. They then try to drink it like soda and end up puking all over the place where you then get a call to come get them and they are smashed. Now they realize beer is easier and then comes the mary jane. Fun times ahead for you.

I didn't willingly let them till they were 19. Although when my son was 15 he warned me I was going to get a call from Zack's dad. And when the phone rings, please answer it before mom gets it. He spilled the beans before I got the call. Zack's dad caught the 2 boys with bottle of Smirnoffs Ice in their basement. When my son told me I kinda laughed and said that stuff's awful. He agreed. So the dad called and my son had told me everything the dad said, so he was honest about it and didn't try to explain his way out. We talked.

He's 19 now and we have an agreement he's never to drive after drinking. I'd much rather he calls/texts me and let me know he's staying at a friend's house. He did this once. I willingly let him have a beer once in a controlled situation.

My 20 year old daughter has far less interest in alcohol. She played in a poker tournament with me this past summer and had a beer or some fruity bottle of something.

For what its worth, most states dont have a problem with kids consuming alcohol with their parents, just don't let them buy it till they are 21.

That's what we've done. It's simply not a big deal if you don't make it one but I'm also not letting him have more than a couple sips. He doesn't really like it anyway so it's not a big deal.

They like it, but they just get a sip of wine or beer here or there.
