It seems like the next 4 years with this guy are going to be filled with controversy. I guess that is what happens when you vote in the least qualified candidate, good job New York City

The honeymoon is over... A big :middlefinger: to any NYer who voted this guy in... As I mentioned in many previous De Blasio threads, Bill Thompson was by far the most qualified candidate. Huge shame that this city was too stupid to vote on qualifications.

This thread will serve as the Deblase controversy center. Her are his first few missteps in about a month:

There are more, but I'll leave these for starters...

I knew Lhota wouldn't win, but would have liked to see him win.

Storms, sick leave and cronyism are (sadly) insignificant when it comes to crime and tax base.

If crime goes up or the tax base goes down, that's when he's in trouble.

Mayor has a big traffic safety campaign going now. Yesterday his suv was filmed violating numerous traffic laws including speeding... With de blasio in the passenger seat.

Read my laugh at Alabama thread and get back to me.

This guy is going to lead to remakes of Charles Bronson movies.

Hard to believe New Yorkers really wanted this.

Bad field of candidates I guess.

People were sick of Republicans after Rudy and Bloomy. Joe Lhota would have been a decent mayor IMO, but he was duller than a spork.

Hizzoner's ads featuring his son also resonated with a large number of voters.

I don't make enough to really care about NYC tax going up and I live in Nassau, but the owners of my company (Democrats) aren't thrilled at the moment. The fact he's still talking about taxing for Pre-K after Cuomo said he can get it done with no new taxes is rubbing the "elite" I know the wrong way.

Can someone explain how in New York where the NYPD (and NYFD) were and are heroes for what they did during the attacks of September 11th, Mayor De Blasio sees fit to denigrate them as some kinds of enemies of the people?

Am I just hearing or reading this wrong?

Is NYC going to reelect this guy or do they show him the door next time around? My sense was last time New Yorkers just had this menu of no good choices and spun the wheel and came up with this joker.

De Blasio accused of having 'blood on his hands': Thousands attack New York City Mayor for backing anti-cop protesters before two officers were shot dead 'in revenge for Garner'
  • Hundreds are attacking Mayor Bill de Blasio, President Barack Obama and Al Sharpton after the murder of two police officers in Brooklyn on Saturday
  • Many are saying that Mayor de Blasio has 'blood on his hands' and 'should be charged with murder'
  • Retired NYPD detective Harry Houck told CNN, 'I guess Al Sharpton got what he wanted'
  • A Move On petition demanding that Mayor de Blasio resign already has thousands of signatures
  • Sharpton has released a statement saying, 'We plan to hold a press conference in the morning to express our outrage and our condolences to the families and the police department'
  • Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said, 'De Blasio, Sharpton and all those who encouraged this anti-cop, racist mentality all have blood on their hands'
Many are blaming the murder of two New York City cops on Saturday afternoon on Mayor Bill de Blasio following his recent support for protesters in the city marching in opposition to a grand jury's decision to not indict the police officer who killed Eric Garner.

Hundreds have taken to social media to say that de Blasio has 'blood on his hands' and should 'be charged with murder' after the two men were killed 'execution style' in Brooklyn.

What's more, many feel that de Blasio should not attend the officers' funerals, this after many members of the NYPD signed a petition asking that the Mayor not attend their service should they be killed in the line of duty in light of his recent actions.

Houck then attacked the Mayor for not supporting the leadership in the police department, saying that he should not show up at the funeral or these two officers.

Furthermore, he said Saturday's killings were inevitable as the protesters wanted to 'take out a cop for Eric Garner.'

He then added, 'I've been waiting for something like this to happen.'

...

A Move On petition demanding that Mayor de Blasio resign already has thousands of signatures.

'Today, Saturday December 20th 2014, 5 days before Christmas, 2 NYPD officers were shot and killed in their cruiser for no apparent reason. With the recent news surrounding the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies around the country, our mayor blasted his own police department by throwing them under the bus,' reads the petition.

'His words and actions on the subject matter of late have to be held accountable. He is unfit to lead this city. He is unfit to have a relationship with his police department for his remaining tenure and he should be taken out of office IMMEDIATELY, with proper protocol to be followed to name a replacement before a special election.'

Sharpton released a statement shortly after the murders, writing; 'I have spoken to the Garner family and we are outraged by the early reports of the police killed in Brooklyn today.

'Any use of the names of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, in connection with any violence or killing of police, is reprehensible and against the pursuit of justice in both cases.

'We have stressed at every rally and march that anyone engaged in any violence is an enemy to the pursuit of justice for Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

'We have been criticized at National Action Network for not allowing rhetoric or chanting of violence and would abruptly denounce it at all of our gatherings.

'The Garner family and I have always stressed that we do not believe that all police are bad, In fact we have stressed that most police are not bad.

'We plan to hold a press conference in the morning to express our outrage and our condolences to the families and the police department.'

This all comes just one week after police union president Pat Lynch called out Mayor de Blasio at a private meeting.

The New York Post reports that Lynch said; 'He is not running the City of New York. He thinks he’s running a f**king revolution.'

He then added; 'If we won’t get support when we do our jobs . . . then we’re going to do it the way they want it.'

New York State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis also called out Mayor de Blasio following Saturday's shooting, saying in a statement; 'It is well past the time for our mayor and citywide leaders to call for a return to order in our streets, and take a hard stance that that lawlessness and aggression towards police officers will not be tolerated.'

I'm guessing next election we see the return of a Giuliani type. This is where NYC was when Giuliani got elected in the first place.

This guy makes Anthony Weiner seem sane and reasonable. It's unbelievable really.
I really do not know if Weiner would be this stupid. Sure, he was an idiot in his personal life, but I don't really recall a torrent of idiotic statements, perpetual indifference to people, and overall tone-deafness from him.

It's crazy that even some people who identify as liberals don't like him.
We will see. I am waiting for condemnation to come from the likes of Tobais and Apple Jack. I will certainly give them credit if they come around. De Blasio's comments are basically indefensible. This is going to sink him, as it should. A mayor of any city should not be coming down on any side except of that of the cops. Being a cop in the inner city is most likely the toughest job in the world. He has made it much more dangerous.

The Mayor shold not be allowed to attend the Funeral of these 2 Police Officers after his comments on December 8th. This guy is an absolute tool.

"For so many of our young people there is a fear. I've had to worry over the years, is Dante safe each night? There are so many families in the city that feel that... safe from the very people they want to have faith in as their protectors," de Blasio said.

despicable thing for a mayor to say

@shadyridr those were the comments he made on December 8th which caused the rift wtih the NYPD. I agree horrible things to say. What is worse is Obama was briefed of the incident today while playing golf in Hawaii on his vacation. Not even a news conference or nothing from our fearless leader. I guess that is how it is when you live life through tinted lenses.

What do you expect from President Party? His behavior here is par for the course.

This is going to get real interesting. If he does not attend, he looks like a weak little twit. If he does attend, he will probably be booed and jeered publicly.

If he wants to survive, he has to try and show up.

Does he have private security? He's going to need it.
why would he need private security?
Obviously you are not paying attention. At. All.
Sure I am. Why would the mayor need private security?
Might not be the worst idea...

I actually think there could be some fanatical extremists that pose a danger to this guy. He's a complete moron and I don't like him, but I obvioulsy wish him no harm.

Jeez, fantasycurse42 - you were all over this train wreck since day 1. Kudos man.

Why don't you read the Post? These links to the Daily News are annoying with their survey questions and IMO the Post is a better paper.

If I'm reading the physical paper, I usually prefer the post.

However, for the most part I do a lot of the reading on my iPhone and I like the mobile experience better on DN over NYP.

If you were black, what would you tell you kids about dealing with cops?

I dont know much about diblasio, and it probably wasnt tactful, but i assume he was being candid.

the mayor is a privileged white guy from Massachusetts and he shouldn't have told the press that. He has to support the nypd.

I don't think the role of the mayor is to reflexively always support cops.
Kinda disagree here, but not enough to argue endlessly... I think everyone can agree though:

When a huge group of Law Enforcement turn their back on you (literally) while you are walking to a podium to deliver a press conference about murdered cops.... Not so good.

Sure, I agree that's not ideal. But I don't think the mayor should be forced to kowtow to the police department just to avoid it.

I don't think so either, but undermining them publicly is pretty damn stupid.
Stupid politically? Probably. That doesn't mean it's wrong to do it.

This particular situation might not be the best for discussion because the cops in the Garner situation, even if they crossed a line, probably didn't do so with malice or any sort of evil intent. DeBlasio could probably have used different words and been better off, without compromising his integrity.

But imagine a hypo where there was widespread evidence of corruption in the police department -- cops taking bribes, unlawfully coercing people to do stuff, etc. In that situation, I think it would be the right thing to do for a mayor to publicly criticize the police. Even if that ended up alienating him from the police department.

I think he responded as he did bc the mayor is white...

Anyways, to answer your question:

I would tell my son the exact same thing - Don't break the law, don't disobey police officers, and be respectful to police officers.
