Musical artists you should see LIVE before they're gone.... (1 Viewer)

I have been to 1 concert in my entire life. This summer I would like to see at least 3. I made this goal a year or two ago (and may have even started a thread on it) but never got around to it. This is the year....

I was hoping some of you guys who are far more into the music scene and have seen some of these performers could offer your opinions and suggestions. My musical tastes are admittedly all over the place. I am not interested in seeing any rappers live, and I'm not interested in seeing heavy metal or death metal. The lone exception might be Motley Crue, because this is their last tour and I really liked their early stuff and, again, that's what this thread is for, seeing bands before they're gone.

Right now on the top of my list is Bruce Springsteen in VA beach. I must see "The Boss" live before he slows down.

The Rolling Stones - Is this their last tour? Did I already miss out since they are 70 years old?

U2

Tom Petty

Green Day - Yes, I know they don't fit the criteria but I just want to see them.

Bob Dylan was on this list but I'm afraid he will just be a colossal letdown. No Tour Dates (In the US) ATM

Are The Police still performing?

Van Morrison - No Tour Dates (In the US) ATM

Rush - No Tour Dates ATM

PaulMcCartney - There are currently no forthcoming gigs confirmed. Please keep checking back to PaulMcCartney.com for gig announcements.

U2 puts on a fantastic show. I saw them after 9/11 when No Doubt opened for them. Highly recommended.

Damn, man---1 concert in your entire life?

Agree with the Stones, U2 and Springsteen recs--I haven't really liked a new album from any of them for many years but they all still bring it in concert. I saw Dylan last summer. His band was fantastic but he was a major let down. Another oldie but still goodie (79 yrs old) that tours occasionally is Leonard Cohen. Again, even if you're not a big fan, he's worth seeing in concert. Same for Ray Davies (the Kinks) and Paul McCartney.

Prince is a must see.

My favorite live acts, regardless of age, that tour currently are My Morning Jacket, Wilco and the Avett Brothers---if you like them, of course.

I saw the last claw show U2 did and thought it was very average. It's great that they have so many tunes that you know but after a couple it is all the same. Bono tries to make everything seem like a big deal with ego talk but I think he always comes off like a tool.

Arcade Fire is in Philly on St. Patrick's day. I have two GA tickets I may have to sell. They will also be in DC this summer. I will be at that one. They are great live.

I've seen Dylan 3 times. All 3 of his shows sucked.

U2 puts on a great show.

AC/DC is high on my list. I hear they still kill it. Prince is also high on my list.

Mötley Crüe is always a fun spectacle.

Acdc

Iron maiden if you are into them at all.
Mötley Crüe from a band/music/spectacle perspective is great, but Vince Neil is done. Only seeing them this summer because I picked up a cheap ticket.

Bruce, U2, Foo Fighters, Petty, McCartney, and AC/DC are must sees. Muse, The Avett Brothers, Aerosmith, The Killers, and Green Day put on great shows.

Paul Simon is still something to see and hear in concert. And he has a great band of multi-instrumentalists too.

I'd love to see Neil Young.
I saw him at a small theater in Philly about 4 years ago. Really cool and eclectic show. It was just him on stage, moving from instrument to instrument. Couple songs on piano, couple with electric guitar, couple on the organ, couple on acoustic guitar & harmonica, etc. Completely immersed in what he was doing, like there was no audience there at all. One I'd like to see -- John Fogerty.

Willie Nelson is a national treasure - see him and the entire family - his sister Bobbie and longtime buddy Paul English especially

That's exactly what I'd love to see.

Even though none of the singers can wail like they used to, I totally agree about McCartney, Rush, and U2. You are guaranteed to a great show if you see any of them.

I don't think the Police have anything planned, but I'd have a hard time calling them a must-see. I saw some footage of their reunion tour from a few years back, and while it sounded and looked okay, the decades of not being together robbed them of their almost-punk attitude that they used to have on stage, where it was like chaos on stage as they rocked out like crazy. It is hard to keep that going when you get older, much less when you are reuniting for money instead of the love of music.

It would be cheesy as hell, but I would love to see McCartney & Stevie Wonder in a small venue on dueling pianos.

Saw Robert Plant a few years ago doing his thing, he is a master showman and while the ticket ain't cheap (although compared to some mentioned in this thread not bad) he is worth every penny. If Jimmy Page is ever out I'd see him as well. Prince would be a great show.

Motley Crue is on their retirement tour, correct? Vince Neil may be finished but Mick Mars is truly done. He has a degenerative disease that is basically hardening his bones so that he can't move. I heard about a year ago he had refused the drug that could assist him in lieu of some homeopathic treatment that is pretty much not working.

On a much smaller scale, Dave Mason (Traffic) and Colin Hay (Men At Work) put on great live shows. The nice thing about seeing them is they play much smaller venues so you can get close and tickets don't cost an arm and a leg.

I've been fortunate to see all of these folks but these are must see before they go. either because of their history or because of how good they are live or a combination of both.

Springsteen - definitely, but unfortunately he has already slowed down. That is expected when he's in his 60's (64 now). Back in 1984 and '85, I saw him play 3.5/4 hours of energetic fun concerts. He can't run around like he used to.

I'm a small Dylan fan and went to see him about 4 years ago. Worst show I've ever been to.
I'm as big a Dylan fan as you'll find and my last show was MSG in 2002. Despite the fact that he's toured constantly since. Only advisable for diehard fans who have never been in the same room with him. That's it. What he's up to now is some kind of seventh level performance artist schtick. Bummer, because he had a lethal band for a while there at the end of the 90s/early 00s.

And my suggestion for bands to see are the ones you want to see. Listen to a bunch of music that is new to you, decide what you like and if that artist or band is touring, go see them. The best times to be had are happening in clubs, not arenas. I'm seeing my favorite artist of the last 20 years in a 700 person venue in a couple months.

If Clapton and Winwood ever go out again don't miss it.

Jeff Beck.

Tedeschi and Trucks Band but they should be around a while.

Widespread Panic.

Great call on Winwood, I really would love to see him.

Just grabbed tickets to see Billy Joel at MSG for his 65th birthday.

Really hoping there's lots of guests as well. Even though he's playing in my backyard in a few months, I think the MSG/birthday experience should be one of his best concerts ever (I'm hoping anyway)

I have heard that the show he does with Sting is awesome. Hearing the two do some of each other's work (separate and together) is supposed to be a one-of-a-kind evening.

I saw Winwood with the Allman Brothers last year and wasn't sure what to expect. He was awesome playing a lot of Traffic tunes and taking them into extended jams. Light Up or Leave Me Alone was incredible

Prince. Saw a surprise show at the fillmore a couple weeks back. Dude ended up playing for.close to six hours straight over two shows

Elvis Costello turns 60 this year. Usually puts on a great show, but in a more intimate setting because he has never been particularly mainstream.

I've pretty much seen everyone that I wanted to. Good story though; I was at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver to see Stevie Ray Vaughn and while we (my GF at the time) were waiting to get in I was talking to the guy in line in front of me. During the conversation he mentioned he was there to see SRV before he died, since all the greatest musicians die young... A few weeks later he was killed. This still gives me the chills to think about that conversation today.

Received tickets for this one in July as a gift.

Some I have seen multiple times, but have not been mentioned:

Muse- One of the best live shows you will ever see...period

Joe Cocker- he is losing his voice, but his band and singers are very tight.

Harry Connick Jr- A fantastic performer.
