Bypass surgery at 40 years old for BIL (1 Viewer)

Just heard from my wife, she's a little upset.

Her 40 year old brother had an appointment today for a possible stent (he's had one already).

Turns out he needs bypass surgery..it's looking like quintuple.

Anybody have any experience with somebody of this age needing bypass surgery??

Wife's uncle had it at a similar age. He's still kicking 25 years later. I'm guessing your BIL has heart disease extensively in the family? I'd have the wife get checked if she hasn't already.

Yes.. horrible cholesterol levels.. hereditary.

My wife continually worries about her heart because of her brother's issues (she has 4, all have high cholesterol).. But she's been checked before and didn't have any problems.. passed a stress test with

flying colors.. but she made another appointment because of what happened today. She's convinced something is wrong with her heart too.. I told her it was panic attacks, which the doctor confirmed at her

last appointment..

This is one case where you're definitely better safe than sorry (within reason). The survival rates of a sudden heart attack are really bad. Other than the stress test, has she had any imaging, ekg, echo, or any other type of diagnostic test? Again, likely nothing, but the high incidence in her family (assuming there's more there than just high cholesterol) would concern me.

Some would say that cholesterol numbers don't mean much at all, and there's very limited value in a stress test or EKG. Don't Die Early has some good info imo.

In this case, the wife's brother has severe coronary vessel disease and high cholesterol at age 40, and all her brothers also with high cholesterol (OP didn't mention if they also have heart disease). In this setting, her cholesterol level is a very important indicator of her risk for heart disease. And her low cholesterol and negative stress test are very reassuring. :)

He's a twin (not identical if that matters) and his brother had a minor heart attack a couple of years ago and have to have a stent.. The other two brothers haven't had a stent put in or any heart issues, but do have the high

cholesterol numbers...

My wife is a nervous wreck about her own heart...

Been reading many articles like this one as of late.

Then it's definitely reasonable for her to see her PCP.

I was tempted to give a smart-a$$ reply about how you really just need to listen to all the FBG's talk about cholesterol numbers being over-rated, and how statins and other med approaches to managing risk factors are unnecessary. But, I won't do that.

Yep, I've heard about relatively young people having clogged arteries and heart attacks. I was 26 when I had my first heart attack, which was immediately followed by a quad-bypass. I've had 2 more attacks and 1 stent inserted in the ensuing 29 years. My next big adventure will most likely involve a transplant.

My advice is for your BIL and your wife is to get the best cardiologists they can find, and put their trust in them. Every situation is unique, and no blanket statement or assumption about meds, etc. applies to all equally. PM me if you want some specific advice. I think we're in the same state, and I know the best Docs in the Madison area. Good luck.
